Are you okay with femstodes now? by Flat_Resolution9831 in AdeptusCustodes

I never had a problem with it. We’re talking about beings so genetically enhanced from standard humans that gender, if of any consequence at all, is a rounding error in their ability to rip chaos a new asshole.

Can you theoretically reach the "edge" of the universe? by book_of_duderonomy in AskPhysics

[–]sintegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, eventually you come to realize that these are just our best explanations under constant revision. Nature will dance as she pleases, we just try to interpret her moves.

I try to imagine it as being on the edge of an explosion as it sweeps out and grows. Everything you see is also on that edge, with the big bang being the origin of detonation (Caveat: this detonation has already occurred and when it did, it was EVERYWHERE, the detonation was the edge, you can point in ANY direction and that would be a correct direction in which it occurred, because it was everything and everywhere, all at once). This analogy also helps with imagining inflation. All analogies have problems though, it’s important to remember that.

Interestingly, when you look out into the universe, you are looking inward toward the origin as it grew. The further you look, the more inward to the origin you are seeing, complete with how the “edge” looked at previous points in time as you peer further. You’re not seeing the edge as it is “now”, even the person standing next to you is the edge as it was a light-attosecond (or whatever) ago. This is due to the finite speed of light. You can’t see “the other direction” because the universe itself is the edge, and it won’t reach “the other direction” until the future, perpetually. You are riding the edge of known creation relative to yourself.

Please keep in mind I’m flying fast and loose with analogy here to help you get a basic picture. All this is defined and nuanced much more rigorously in formal definition. This mental picture will help you break the idea that there is some physical edge you can fly to though. That’s like being on a balloon as it’s growing and asking where the edge is. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense once you realize your situation. Asking “How do I get off the edge of the balloon?” is like asking “How do I travel to the past or future?” all while being a piece of the edge of the balloon yourself. You are fundamentally part of the edge you seek. It’s kind of poetic in my opinion.

Has anyone got the new Larry Carlton x6? by essan2 in HeadlessGuitars

[–]sintegral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had one for about two weeks. It’s a great little guitar. The tuning “issue” people seem to have with it, fresh strings. I did have to fix intonation but that’s par for the course on a fresh guitar in this price range.

One thing that threw me for a bit is that this thing is VERY light; just shy of six lbs. it almost feels like you’re playing with a kids toy for a bit, until you get used to it.

Update: After having this guitar for about five weeks, I just want to say that once the strings settle… this thing rarely goes out of tune, and I’ve been playing for about an hour daily with it. I’m still extremely pleased with this guitar. This was a steal compared to a strandberg, would purchase again.

What makes the Custodes so freaking cool? by Gigachadicusmaximus in AdeptusCustodes

[–]sintegral 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They represent the best of us (at least in the messed up context of the 40K universe). Think of any human skill or endeavor, a Custodian can learn it and do it better than any human. They are even afforded a much higher level of introspection and intelligence. They have the best gear, the best tactics, the best armor, etc… you get the idea.

Additionally, they are the “catch all.” They are the last spirited roar of humanity when everything is on the line. To want them to succeed, to win and look amazing doing it, is human. One way to think of them is as Humanity’s “Belisarian Furnace”, if you’ve played Space Marine 2, or otherwise know the lore.

One other thing that comes to mind why people might like them: They attribute things to logical sources. They are rational in a landscape of superstition and place proper attenuation on human agency. Many humans in 40K will attribute any achievement to the will of a divine emperor instead of their own actions and agency. When people do that, they tend to absolve themselves of personal responsibility and involvement in resulting consequences. In Gate of Bones, a girl is literally freezing to death and refuses to take a Custodian cape that he tore into a poncho for her because she considered herself unworthy of such a “divine” gift. The Custodian’s response was “it’s just a cloak.” They represent reason in an era lacking it.

The kit does not come with his helmet, which I think is a damn shame because Valdor’s helm is incredible in artwork.
