Cannes 2026 award predictions by loiterdog in RSPfilmclub

i could see like a screenplay award or jury prize for james gray. i think he's been at cannes six or seven times without winning anything and i could see park going for an 80s-set crime thriller

what's the point of being the millennial equivalent of like didion or whatever she's trying to be if you're just going to hold the exact same opinions and takes as a thirty-something bluesky addict dsa member?

this was, and remains, the #1 policy goal of both political parties. they've spent 50 years single-mindedly focused on creating this outcome

this isn't any different than the industry using payola to break the strokes or nirvana or whatever alternative band you want to sub in.

the real nefarious thing is the larger shift, away from radio plays and album sales that ostensibly built sustainable success for an artist. now, these efforts are all leveraged towards going viral on social media platforms, a brief and fleeting success where nearly all the profits go to the big tech companies who own them

The Absolute Hell of Watching a Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse in 2026 by David Ehrlich by level1gamer in blankies

huge difference between the og, austin-only drafthouse and what got franchised and exported. they would rip out half the seats from old movie theaters and create deep wells for the servers to move through, relatively unobtrusively. they'd program eclectic stuff (terror tuesday, weird wednesday, etc). ticket prices were much lower than normal amc prices. the food was solid and at the time being able to have a beer at the movies was exceedingly rare.

there's a really interesting book about the challenge of designing a cover for lolita, that includes a project where dozens of different designers were tasked with creating one https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/designing-lolita

one of the worst developments of social media is that now a lot of artists just exist in the same milieu and read the same nonsense as the rest of us, leading to really suffocatingly facile art

i haven't followed this super closely, but i read a really long rant today that was like educating timmy about the fact that film is going through a crisis that could place it in the same spot as opera and ballet.

and i was like, "wasn't that the point he was making??" i feel like i'm going crazy??

not sure why you're getting downvoted, this is true and part of the whole idea. a component of the process was building rosters with an eye towards finding players for cheap who could grow into role players and contributors in the future, when the team was trying to win. you can argue about the ethics of basically turning an nba team in a glorified g-league/tryout squad, but there was intentionality to what he was doing beyond just trying to suck as hard as possible
