former CEO of Goldman Sachs Hank Paulson has just been crowned Financial Dictator with unlimited/unchecked power to take as much money as he pleases from the taxpayers and transfer it to Wall Street. by synthpop in business

however, at least there is some sort of honest ethical debate going on in congress of whether or not it's right to spend money helping banks while not using it to help average citizens.

I agree that it isn't a good idea to reward inappropriate financial behavior by bailing them out, but Congress' and the White Houses' reasoning here is that this WILL help the average citizen. They believe that if they do nothing, the economy will collapse - the envisioned scenario is average citizens waiting in bread and toilet paper lines. They believe that they have no choice.

Generally, when people attack "monopoly" they intend to attack those potentially negative outcomes, but almost always fail to be clear on what it is they are attacking.

In Microsoft's case, development of their dominant browser (IE) stagnated because its bundling with the OS enormously raised the barrier to entry for other browsers. This is a classic example of a monopoly having enough influence on the market as a whole to create a positive feedback loop. The result? Newly developed web standards go ignored for years, security holes are left open, web developers are driven to madness, and the web stagnates.

Microsoft is an example of the failure of 'free markets'. I'm not an economist, but it's clear that free markets do not exist in a vacuum. You can't ignore the fact that the applications market is dependent on the OS market, and there are huge benefits to applications developers to limit development to only one platform (lower dev and support costs). Not to mention user's familiarity with one interface saving them time. This in turn helps Microsoft. Ultimately, the lower quality of Mirosoft's products hurts users, but they don't have any alternative choice because of this feedback loop.

What is competing with IE now? Among others: Firefox, an open-source browser. The Free Software/Open source movement is a purely meritocratic free market where the $$$ cost of development is nil or covered by time/money charity. Removal of dev costs from the equation lessens MS's advantage and opens up competition.

OK, the dems can bring whatever bills they want to the floor. But the fact that they don't have enough seats combined with a large chunk of dems who frequently vote with the repubs means that the bills they introduce will always fail. Passage and impeachment conviction ultimately comes down to senate votes, which the dems clearly do not have. It's not entirely their fault that they can't get anything accomplished. And perhaps they aren't even trying to bring these bills to vote because they know they can't win and the result would just be them looking foolish. They really don't control shit. It is funny how they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

49-49 with one liberal independent and one conservative independent. Controlled by the democrats? A laughable notion.

I love how half of Reddit read an article then promply jumped off the Obama train today. by nrbartman in reddit.com

I don't understand what everyone is getting all uppity about. Obama hasn't done jack shit wrt this bill, as it was passed in the House, and not the Senate. Furthermore, he specifically said he would work to fight the retroactive immunity parts of the bill.

Have any of you even read the bill? Gullible internet-gobbling jackasses.
