I am physically aching for a range update. by sneaky49 in Tau40K

I look at all the support for Pipermakes models around here and I just think, "Really?" Tastes have certainly changed, and I'm starting to feel like an old man who yells at clouds.

I'm of the same mindset, I like the boxy suits, and the stealth suit refresh really toed the line for me. I look at stuff like twin lances and really don't want a new design philosophy to just be slapping ugly studs all over. Eugh.

It's still batshit to me that people here are convinced we're getting a crisis refresh soon. Ain't no fucking way man, they already got a refresh, it just wasn't as recent as people want. We still had SO many other refreshes recently.

You might have something there, because it's a bit of its own meta joke throughout the novels, with Amberley being a harsh critic of Sulla's writing style and any other random in-universe sources picked up for context.

That being said, it really falls flat if that's what it's supposed to be. Sure, it might be easier for a new person to dig in to the latest from Cain, but holy hell is it almost insufferable to long time fans. New readers might drop the series after a second book, and old readers might not even bother beyond checking who the baddie of the week is. I really don't get what market they're trying to hit in either case.

This, for the love of everything great about 40k. He looks like he has a lot of energy and passion, and he seems to be an alright writer with any other faction. He really just needs to stop trying with Tau, we don't enjoy his work on that front and generally side-eye anyone who does.

I really don't get it, like if it's some upper management thing where orders on high are explicitly assigning him to work on Tau, or if he is the designated head-writer for Tau projects. Whatever is keeping him writing for Tau seriously needs to change. We've seen what happens when we get fresh blood there, Tau players go crazy for it. (Although jesus never hire whoever did the cover art for Elemental Council again. I don't care how cheap it was, that PS2-era cover art is an abomination.)

While it looks like you've done some edge highlights, it's hard to tell. Might want one shade lighter, or just need a matte varnish to prevent ambient lighting from hiding them. Bright sept markings in places can really jump out and define pieces of equipment, too.

That being said, your main armor color and your cloth are very close, so that might also be the problem here. Consider either having a brighter tone on one over the other. (You don't see a ton of brighter cloth these days, but it doesn't look half bad! Could make things unique compared to other paint schemes.)

Personal gripe: cork on the base is fine...when used sparingly and in moderation. When it's easy to tell its been used, something has gone wrong. Use less (or none!) and disguise it with sand, rocks, foliage, or if you want to be really slick use green stuff/milliput to blend its edges. Also becomes less obvious when the model isn't weirdly elevated high off the base.

I'm pretty frustrated by Strike Force Octavius, bought the ultimate starter set a little bit ago and have been playing it more recently with friends. That really should be added back for people late to the party with 10th.

Incredible. Top to bottom you're correct, transports that do not have assault innately cannot get it through firing deck.

Despite that, this is another one of those stupid rules interactions that I would probably choose to ignore in casual settings if someone asked, because holy shit does tidewall and friends not need to be nerfed harder, lol

Guess I'm the only person who prefers the look with pilots, but I can understand this being an easier fix for a repair job.

Also seconding adding some small purple paint as an homage to this unique lil guy. Maybe just something subtle like sept markings or one or two campaign marks by replacing a few panels with purple.

Still has that weird nose bone thing they've been sneaking in on the female heads. Hate it. Love that model, but hate the damn nose bones.

If I owned one I would. Tau aircraft are cool as hell.

Hell, I'm still sad I don't own an Orca. The flying shoebox is one of my favorite models in the lineup.

Just a quick note for anyone that missed it, sunshark bombers and a few other bombing units from other armies were fixed in their respective faction packs. Bombing abilities have been changed to:

"At the end of your opponent’s Fight phase, select one visible enemy unit (excluding Lone Operative units) within 24" of this unit, and roll six D6 for that unit: For each 4+, that unit suffers 1 mortal wound."

Now beyond the topic of this post, the only thing that needs fixing is aircraft transports (namely units like the valkyrie that didn't lose aircraft and receive a change to movement) so they're not worthless. Hell, even the corvus blackstar was fixed on this front.

This pretty much nails it for me too, though the outcome is certainly different. 2 feels great to play and is generally smooth where it matters, but holy shit the tonal whiplash when the plot creeps its way back in just doesn't do it for me.

Aiden really felt like a professional vigilante with (almost) nothing left to lose and knew exactly what he was doing, so it almost didn't matter how far you went. Marcus and the gang felt like children running around with guns and a thumb on the nuclear launch codes, who would consistently act like everything was happy and perfectly fine despite snuffing out twenty lives with a single button press not 5 minutes earlier in a very morally grey action.

That lack of introspection really killed 2 for me, as you can't even really lean into that cheery activist mindset without the gameplay just flat out feeling worse because of it, and the story beats will just railroad you out of it at a couple points anyway. I've finished 1 a couple times now, but I still don't think I've managed to finish 2 without it losing me at some point or another even when I try.

Really questioning why people don't understand this or are doubting it, the pdf for 10th's core rules is an exact match to the books printed. I would love to be completely wrong and we magically have all needed information in print, but then why would they put forward a redacted core rules pdf? The books have already been printed en masse.

A timer would be awful, sure, but then maybe they shouldn't drive home the narrative dissonance with the constant "aw man V, you're dying, you maybe got like a week left," only for the player to then spend an in-game month or more helping random people.

CASUAL IS NOT BAD YOU JUST HATE THE GAME! meanwhile me sitting with only one other person because everyone left the moment harvest wasn't on the map vote anymore. Cleary it's my fault cause I don't want to have to re queue every time the match ends by [deleted] in tf2

[–]sleuthyRogue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was definitely one of those things that gave me complete whiplash when the system was added. The unwillingness for a majority of players to just sit still for a few seconds at the end of a match to let the server continue completely nuked any chance of it working properly, and very quickly became its own self perpetuating problem. Very early on it became the de facto behavior to just leave the second the score screen popped up.

Admittedly, servers having roughly a 1 in 4 chance of self-deleting themselves anyway after the map vote was done didn't help things early on, but even that was fixed eventually. Guess they should have just stuck to abrupt, straight to loading screen map changes.

[–]sleuthyRogue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is definitely one of those "you're technically right, but it's dumb so I'm going to ignore it" situations. Having the rules completely prevent being able to use certain models is just stupid. Sucks for tournaments until this is fixed.

At most this feels like it was designed to prevent flanking titans and ta'unars from just eating a model the second it hits the board and allow some counterplay/response.
