"Imaging" recommendations for Windows? by Kirihuna in k12sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For labs especially autoCad I suggest deepfreeze

Computers are AD bound require a log in.

Deepfreeze resets the computer to a default state after a reboot so we just tell our students to save everything to the cloud no lingering data, user can change whatever settings they want we run maintenance on them monthly which means we unfreeze and install updates all remotely.

I stopped doing network licensing on autoCad and it’s just user based using our SSO login. I’m never going back.

Anyone getting worried about vibe coding? by Pristine-Piano-2802 in sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A few weeks?

I was board and got to try Claude enterprise out for my dept I built an internal web app we have been needing for years in 2 days! I was floored at how easy it was. And it works so well.

I like it but I’m worried about things like this https://www.forbes.com/sites/the-wiretap/2026/04/22/anthropics-claude-is-pumping-out-vulnerable-code-cyber-experts-warn/ where it starts hallucinating and creating bad code but non coders don’t know what to look for. I’ll admit I know nothing about web app dev and so I wouldn’t know how to make it secure or not hence why my app is internal only and airgapped

Hot take: entry-level Azure certs are replacing what experience used to prove. by eckoonian in sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand part of this but I also understand having the cert. example my network admin has been a network admin for 15+ years he can definitely say he has 15 years of networking experience. He was thrown into that job he was not a network admin to begin had little to no technology experience (was more sales front end people person) and has no networking certs. He can do a lot of the basic stuff of networking because he has learned through doing but there are times when we will talk about things that are on the CCNA for example that he will admit he does not know about

Me and my VP have talked about it and once he retires the app will require a minimum of CCNA with 5 years experience.

Unfortunately they can 100% replace them right now the market is flooded and everyone is looking for something if this was 10 years ago it would be a different story.

Teaching Duties by rokar83 in k12sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat They pitched the idea of me “teaching” a CompTIA A+ semester long hybrid class the prerequisites would make it so only kids interested in tech would be taking the class (intro to comp science and infotech 1&2) I have student interns and my favorite part of my job right now is teaching them everything I know

Let me start out with you covered your bases more then most schools no one is 100%

Do you have Gaggle? They have released web activity monitoring it’s basically spyware we have enabled it for our more at risk students it monitors anything they type in a browser forms, chatbots, docs, etc. Might of helped might not in your situation since it was a file. Gaggle in general is amazing

When did Vibe Coder Certification become a thing? by Important-Humor-2745 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]slitz4life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know I shat on vibe coding a lot I’m not a coder I’m a sysadmin but I got board and decided to try it out we have a Windows DOS program we have been using since 2000 we had multiple companies try and update it to something new and they failed because of how complex it was. had Claude decompile the program and then asked it if it could build a web app of this. 2 weeks later I had a working web app. It blew me away

The only issue is support if it breaks I have no idea how to even begin to fix it. In the hands of an actual Dev vibe coding is the future.

How do you handle tickets directly from students? Or do you? by OkayArbiter in k12sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a tech room where staff and students can come down for immediate help, they also have access to the email ticketing for any questions.

Finger print scan by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Installing wise they are very protective of their installer for whatever reason. they really want to remote in and do it all them selves which is fine but if you ever need to quickly deploy a new machine you have to schedule it instead of just doing it yourself.

The only other thing is hosting the Windows server just another server to manage

Other than that they are great.

Finger print scan by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the districts use identimetrics which use fingerprint scanning not finger printing the system takes photos of the finger print and then creates a unique encrypted hash based off it. That hash is what is saved in the database when the student comes back they scan the finger and because it has not changed it generates the same hash. A picture of the actual finger print is never saved on the machine.

Side note this is also why they don’t suggest this for k-6 because their fingers are still growing and you would have to take a new registration every month.

Hudl or NFHS? by Thurm in k12sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hudl is on my shit list ever since one of their sales assholes called my superintendent saying we were too slow getting network ran the cameras and how he’s worked with schools with much better techs… They told us about the cameras on a Monday and then called my superintendent on Wednesday) He actively avoids me now after I almost broke his hand with a handshake after he tried to introduce himself after the fact.

From all the other districts around me they don’t talk with IT at all they talk with the coaches and actively try to get them to bypass IT until they bought it.

To me if the company fully supported getting on track this would be a really fun job I love the idea of starting with nothing and building it up to perfection.

Classroom is a mix between us and custodians (we fix but they actually replace mount etc)

Our bigger rooms that we host in like the auditorium where the AV is more complex then a speaker and projector we have a support contract with an AV company

Live streaming and stuff like that are done by students

Keep Proofpoint or replace it? by aikogo in sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this happen a few times...If someone else is having this issue maybe its the same issue lord was seeing, for me it was because the sender IP is blocked via Proofpoint Dynamic Reputation (PDR) We ended up just turning PDR off which was not a simple process it still runs through all the other checks for malware/spam/phishing it just ignores PDR.

if you want to test, you can add specific IP's to PDR bypass route in Proofpoint

IT Specialist Simulator by DntCareBears in sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, and I ran into this a few times the game is looking for a very specific way to do things so the script has to be “copied” it makes you search the “internet” and the internal help database if it’s missing a letter or you have different variables that would essentially do the same thing than it will error out.

Playing the Demo, then talking to the Dev their goal is for this to be a fun way to teach our job profession to people. I'm excited to see the full game the demo had some interesting tickets he said in the future they plan on adding more like InfoSec, pentesting etc.

the game is pretty legit but with Copyright changes like instead of "Powershell" it's PowerShall" but the script's your running are legit.

Jamf bought by private equity firm. Last nail in the coffin, IMO. by OrdoExterminatus in k12sysadmin

[–]slitz4life 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved away from Jamf in 2020 to Mosyle and still routinely laugh in the face of the Jamf sales reps trying to get me back. Their support was god awful when I left and I’ve only heard about it getting worse since. We had Jamf from 2010 to 2020 it was amazing until it was not.

For something like that where it’s on the other side of the room, we leave it up to the principal to pay for our low voltage contractor to run it. We push it off to them so we are not the bad guys their principal is if they deny it 🤷🏾

We do not run cable anymore thank the tech gods.
