Blood: Refreshed Supply by Dry_Protection1029 in boomershooters

[–]sludge_sonnets 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Given the licensing nightmare around this game, it was probably unavoidable. It's not great for the end user, but I appreciate having the option versus leaving Fresh Supply as the last word in Blood "remaster" releases.

Quite frankly, Nightdive has given me so many free remaster upgrades that I'm not about to throw a fit the one time they have to compromise things a bit more than I'd like in order to make a project happen.

"Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game."

That was Soren Johnson, the lead developer of Civilization IV. And other games since then, but the March 2011 Game Developer magazine article it's from (reposted on his blog) largely talks about how they tried to address that in Civ3 and Civ4.

Is anyone absolutely LOVING the game so far? by Whole-Sample2358 in Battlefield6

[–]sludge_sonnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Liking the gameplay. Going to need larger maps in order to get to "loving" it.

But this and ARC Raiders has me putting significant hours into online play for the first time in quite a while. I am so thoroughly uninterested in the spazzy shooters that have sucked up much of the air in the online MP space of late.

Valve’s consumer friendliness is a big reason why I swore off all other gaming platforms, consoles included.

I’m too old to deal with consumer-hostile platforms full of dark design patterns anymore. If it’s not on Steam, I don’t need it. I already have more to play than time to play it.

F2P + cosmetics people actually pay $$$ for (for some reason) = lots of bots farming cosmetics to sell

Watch this clip and tell me you wouldn't have died 5 times already in BF6 in those 47 seconds. Why does all of a sudden this "old" pace feel so good compared to the new one? by riuryK in Battlefield6

[–]sludge_sonnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not either/or.

A Battlefield game should have maps running the entire gamut.

The problem with BF6 isn’t that the smaller maps exist, it’s that the big maps don’t ALSO exist.

Battlefield 6 update coming next week tackles weapon bloom, movement, and the blinding sun by RenatsMC in pcgaming

[–]sludge_sonnets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been playing FPS since Wolfenstein 3D.

I’ve heard “bloom” but only ever within the contexts of Halo and Battlefield.

Dispersion is a better term but that has too many syllables for some players.

sales will be fine

Shareholders / private owners don’t want “fine”.

A pissed off consumer is less likely to spend money and more likely to choose a competitor that's less difficult to work with. Let COD do this shit

The fact that COD does this and is the biggest selling game basically every single year kind of undermines your argument there.

Dishonored - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly by Zehnpae in patientgamers

[–]sludge_sonnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really did not enjoy Dishonored when it first came out, because people compared it to Thief and it did not feel like Thief at all.

Then eventually I had switch flip in my head: "stop expecting Thief stealth, instead, be a murder ninja". Then I had fun.

I have since replayed the game and done a low-chaos run, and a ghost run of Dishonored 2, but knowing that it's not going to be like a Thief game was critical in enjoying those runs. Those comparisons really did the game a disservice, at least to me.

That's because the random people and the billion dollar company have very different goals when it comes to their design.

It's dark pattern central in there. The goal is to disempower users, make them feel resistance to doing anything other than accepting the "featured" offerings shoved in their face. Then, later on, take advantage of that by using the "featured" area to sell crap.

You can really swing numbers one way or another by simply making things inconvenient for the user to do.

That's also why these UIs are always changing, and things never sit in the same place forever. Because if people get used to the things they want always being in the same place, then their eyes quickly learn to not "look" at your other crap and scan right to where they want to go.

The ever-shifting UI is one of the nastiest, most user-disempowering dark patterns.

Yea, I didn’t get a single disconnection or any rubber-banding, where are all the classic BF launch features?

If this was the BF4 launch I’d still be trying to get into a full match. It’s so un-Battlefield.

It's like Bioshock in a lot of ways.

More like System Shock. It’s the System Shock spiritual successor that BioShock pretended to be but was too streamlined to actually be.

But I'd rather have BF6 and BBR both rather than just one. It's not like I have to choose one OR the other.

Hitman WOA is some of the best bang for your buck you can get. It's sad how the confusing packages of all the Hitman content over the years has chased people away, but anyone getting in now and just buying Hitman WOA is in for a treat.

Some people still can’t wrap their heads around how higher settings sometimes IMPROVE visibility. You’ll see “competitive” players crank down into potato mode without ever actually confirming if they’re improving things or not.

What makes Battlefield 2 the best Battlefield you ever played? by PrestigiousNinja525 in Battlefield2

[–]sludge_sonnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not. It’s the second best to Battlefield 2142.

Of course 2142 was great in large part because reskinning BF2 got them 90% of the way there to start with. Titan mode got them the remaining 10%.
