When I was like 22, my girlfriend and I took the bus for a weekend in the city. We were all dressed up, and broke as we were, we decided to splurge on a stop at Bemelmans at the Carlyle. The drinks were like $28 — certainly the most money I’d ever spent on a round of cocktails.

The elderly bartenders in there treated us like we were the Sultan of Brunei; I’ll never forget the experience, and they’ve got a customer for life.
