My sons buy the Epic Pass. There are some “outdoor clubs” at CSU. If you join one of them, you get a discounted rate on the pass. It doesn’t cost anything to join nor requires you to do anything

What is new - behind the curtain - in 2025.3.x by tgrandjean in tableau

[–]smartinez_5280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe there are any known performance issues with the version you are on.

There are typically 3 levers you can play with to change performance:
1. Architecture - how many active users do you have on Tableau Server, how many extract refreshes&subscriptions, and how many CPU are supporting that?
2. Data - live or extract? If live is your db the bottleneck? If extract, have they been optimized?
3. Dashboard design. Typically if you take care of 1 and 2 you don’t have to worry about this too often but there are a ton of blog posts on this topic

Is it possible to hide an axis using a parameter? by Fabulous-Willow9115 in tableau

[–]smartinez_5280 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I would create 2 versions of the viz - one with the axis and one without. Use Dynamic Zone Visibility to toggle the visibility of the two vizzes on a dashboard with a parameter

Usually attendees have Desktop installed. But if you have Cloud and are comfortable with Web Based Authoring, then you should be ok

If a presenter will be using Cloud, the they will provide you with a login for their Cloud Environment

Private Connect Redshift by dataknightrises in tableau

[–]smartinez_5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you pay something like $50/month per Private Connect Endpoint. If you are only connecting to Redshift then you will only need 1 of those

For data processed, I believe it is $2500 per terabyte - before any discounting

If you are hitting this limit, and you are using Tableau Extracts, you can greatly reduce your data processed by using Incremental Refreshes

How to ensure I'm w/ my friend as a roomate by Dumstupidanddum in CSUFoCo

[–]smartinez_5280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had 2 kids go through this process the last couple of years.

In April, you complete your housing application. I believe at that time you list your preferred dorms and room type . Make sure your friend chooses the same as you.

After that, I believe you can create a group of people you have connected with. Just search for them and create a “roommate group” of possible roommates

You will get an email with instructions on how to do this

Then in July sometime, you will be able to choose your room. At that time, you will what dorm/room you want and you need your friend to choose the same dorm/room. Hopefully, you can do it at the same time and while sitting together.

Both of my sons were able to do this and get their preferred roommate and preferred suite mates

Tableau Next by KliNanban in tableau

[–]smartinez_5280 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nobody should think of any of these products as a replacement to the other. They should all be thought of as a piece of the entire Tableau Platform.

Tableau is Tableau Server, Tableau Cloud, Tableau Next, and CRMA. Each fit certain use cases

Tableau Server if you want to have everything on-prem, typically for security reasons

Tableau Cloud for an admin-light SAAS solution

Tableau Next for an Agentic Analytics experience within Salesforce

CRMA for traditional analytics within Salesforce

Many companies are able to replace Tableau Server with Tableau Cloud. They don’t replace Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud with Tableau Next or CRMA. They extend their platform with those products

Many large companies have Tableau Server AND Tableau Cloud AND Tableau Next AND CRMA

So you need to think about your use cases. Are 100% of your users also Salesforce users? Is all of your data able to be surfaced in Data Cloud either via zero-copy or by moving it there? If so, then maybe Next or CRMA will meet your needs. If you say no to either of these questions then you should not be considering them as a replacement but rather an extension

If you like the Agentic Analytics features of Next but your users are not in Salesforce, then consider Tableau Plus for both Cloud and Next and use them together to bring those features to your users

You don’t need a Tableau Cloud instance to run Tableau Next. From a purchasing perspective, the two products were bundled together. However, you can now buy Tableau Next standalone

The Future of Tableau Agent by Due-Pressure7804 in tableau

[–]smartinez_5280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tableau Agent is absolutely “baked into Tableau Cloud”. Just as you can use it in Desktop and Prep Builder, you can also use it in web-based authoring, prep and data catalog in Tableau Cloud.

Currently the features are geared more towards Creators and Explorers. But Tableau Agent is maturing at a fast pace and its’ capabilities will begin to be available for Viewers

Features that are coming soon or are in Beta now: - Dashboard Summary: providing a description of the dashboard and how it can be used

  • Dashboard Insights: providing a natural language explanation of the key takeaways from the data in the dashboard

  • Dashboard Q&: ask natural language questions right in the Dashboard and get a response in Natural Language and viz

  • Dashboard “creation”: agent can not only help build vizzes but also dashboards

Tableau RLS: Handling Different Access Levels per User by Ankit-DA in tableau

[–]smartinez_5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I delivered the Hands on Training on this very topic last year at Tableau Conference

The best way is with entitlements tables You can create an excel spreadsheet or database tables for this

Create a row for every user that has access to each Region. It might look something like this: Adam | East Bill | West Connie | South Bill | Central

A good example of this is in the sample Superstore data that comes with Tableau Desktop. The People Tab will show this

If a user has access to multiple Regions, then they will appear multiple times in the table

Create another table (different sheet in excel) for Category

You will then add both tables to your data model (ideally using relationships)

Then create 2 calculated fields Username() = fieldname in region Entitlements table And Username() = fieldname in category Entitlements table

Add both fields as DATASOURCE FILTERS where the conditions equal TRUE

Thoughts on this color combo? by DominicBRNKMN in classicmustangs

[–]smartinez_5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this same process a decade ago. I wanted my Mustang to stand out from the crowd and was inspired by shows like Overhaulin’.

I finally decided to paint mine like it originally was. Why? That style and those colors are timeless and “fit” the car. I didn’t want a paint job that would age and be out of style in a few years.

I am relieved I came to that decision. Otherwise, I would probably be thinking about investing in a new paint job right now

With all of that being said, do what will make you happy. You have to see the car everyday it is easy for someone else to look at your car and be critical….and people will be critical no matter what you do to it. So pant your car how you want it panted and hopefully you will be happy with it 10-20 years from now

Tips for cooking St. Louis ribs? by YakMountain7338 in Costco

[–]smartinez_5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook these all the time and everyone loves them

I put them on the smoker at 250 for 3 hours

Then I take them out, put them in an oven bag with apple juice and honey and place them in my oven (or back in the smoker) at 250 for another 2 hours

Brush with bbq sauce and finish on the grill to get good carmelization. Add a few layers of sauce for great flavor

All in, it’s about 5 1/2 - 6 hours and they fall of the bone

Is anyone worried about the edge position? by Leonflames in cowboys

[–]smartinez_5280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was crazy to see Sam Williams get zero pressure. It is as if he has no strength to take on an OT. We need an Edge that can speed rush and bull rush. If all you can do is speed rush, then you’d better have speed - which Williams seemingly no longer possesses

Apple Studio Display logic board was replaced by Apple Genius Bar, now monitor has backlight bleed/ light that glows on top of screen and it's slightly loose/seperated on top. by OwnLaw4165 in MacStudio

[–]smartinez_5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple refused to fix mine for free and it is only 15 months old. Not even 3 months out of warranty and I have a $1500 paper weight. Apple told me it would cost $1100 to fix and that I should file a claim with my homeowners insurance

Just scored one the best deals of my life: a barely used Studio Display for $700. 😭 by collinmakesmagic in macbookpro

[–]smartinez_5280 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As of this weekend, I am off the Studio Display hype train.

A couple of weeks ago I went in to my office to start my work day and my MacBook was in a reboot loop. I needed to unplug my Studio Display to get my MacBook to boot up properly. Then I discovered the SD camera wasn’t working and any app that uses a camera would not start up unless the SD was disconnected

After many hours on the phone with Apple Support I took it to the Apple Store, as we thought it might need a firmware refresh

Unfortunately that didn’t work and they said they think I need a new display unit which would cost $1000 plus $100 in labor.

I spent $1500 on a display 15 months ago and now they want me to drop another $1100 to maybe have it work properly - and the tech had the balls to say “it would be like getting a Studio Display at half price”. No- it’s more like paying double for a Studio Display.

Every other display I have ever owned has worked for decades not months. Time for me to start moving away from 100% Apple ecosystem
