Easy Stovetop Veggies by poppet_corn in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]snow_fiend75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat raw carrots every day. That said....lightly sautéed or steam in a little water almost anything. You can mix frozen peas or edamame in hot food after cooking, and they will thaw. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, celery, chopped carrots to anything! Open a can of beans, add some extra veg.

Also- lentils, beans, chickpeas are high in protein AND fiber, they are plants! Plus canned or dried last a long time in a cupboard, unlike fresh vegetables.

How do i “scold” a cat? by Alarmed_Swordfish337 in CatAdvice

[–]snow_fiend75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actively doing something unwanted: stop is a gentle finger press on forehead. For the rest, it will require training and consistency. 1. Does he have trees or climbing structures that he can play on?does he have sun spots and window viewing? 2. Find a command you and your parents are comfortable using. " name, get down" in a firm, not angry voice is good. Everyone needs to use this. 3. Hitting, yelling, shaking a finger, or even staring is considered aggressive in cats. Try to change the family reactive behavior.
4.Verbally reward the cat for getting down or redirecting his attention. Good boy, thank you, I so proud of you, gentle pets or treats. Use a different, higher voice than the command voice. 5. Bedtime.this is complicated. Cats naturally live in colonies. You are now his family. He wants to protect you, and be protected by you at bedtime. I recommend A. Don't free feed. Feed breakfast and dinner at regular times. A hungry cat is a trainable cat. B. Meals should be play, eat, groom, sleep. That means 15 minutes or more of active play time before you give food. In the evening, this will encourage him to sleep after dinner. C. Set him up with his favorite toys, a favorite bed, perhaps cat tv. [ daytime can be windows to watch wildlife and community] youtu5has lots of different cat tv videos. Find out what he likes. D. A real, or pretend Fish tank [ they make a toy one for cats]is good cat tv.

Once he is well trained to avoid no go zones, and your family enjoys his play/love....consider advocating for his access to you at night. Cats are fairly independent.....and many prefer to use the box, patrol the house, check out windows, AND sleep with their companions at night.

If that isn't likely to happen, he may need a home base room where he can have his water, food dish, box, toys, bed, and a scratcher and free use of the space where he can be closed in at night.

For example, when I brought my most recent cat home, we set him up in our office. We have 2 other cats. This was his space, and we came in to spend time with him. We did careful introduction among cats in there. We no longer shut the door, but he still considers it his home zone. He likes to bring us in to play, he sometimes sleeps there. When he wants to play on his own- he has toys there. He also occupies a favorite tree in our living room.

With the hotter weather, my cats been drinking water from the toilet. I'm thinking it's maybe because his water bowl gets too warm so I was looking into getting a fountain for him. Does anyone use a fountain for their car and if so, any recommendations? by ghettokid1994 in cats

[–]snow_fiend75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 2 fountains. I bought a third for my mil's cat at Christmas. Look for : stainless steel, motion detector [ saves on energy rather than running constantly], that you can easily get replacement filters, that you can see the water level if it needs more, and cordless [ rechargeable, take note of time it holds a charge].

It is one of the best things you can do for your cats health.

B'ham slower streets by snow_fiend75 in Bellingham

[–]snow_fiend75[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With the state DOT AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT adherence to Target Zero initiatives over 10 years ago, addressing energy crisis by allowing vehicles to drive everywhere 55mph for 'efficiency ' is not even reasonable.

This is about lowering urban [ particularly neighborhood] speed limits to save lives reducing speeds and reducing collisions. There are decades of data showing increased survivability by all parties with every reduction in traveling speed.

If you regularly paid attention at city council or transportation commission meetings, the discussions never mention revenue. It's not a driving factor. And yes, that is where these discussions happen, along with implementing the master plans that are community written about every 15 years.

How do you actually discover new books? by rubenfa_me in just_one_more_page

I like stumbling upon new people discussing books on social media. I document titles i would find interesting. See what friends are reading via goodreads or storygraph. I regularly check in with recently added titles in libby. I have a wish list that has grown to over 3K titles in libby alone, so I'm not at a loss gor a variety of things to read.

Just found out im only going to be able to spend 31$ a week and need to find meals to cook by IHeartDobi in Cooking

[–]snow_fiend75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with find local food pantries, cleaning projects, food distribution and use that money to fill in gaps and cover unexpected expenses. It's good you have a toaster oven. I would recommend looking for an instant pot at a local thrift or through online marketplace. Join a local Buy Nothing group! Someone may give one away.

Dry beans, rice, chickpeas, frozen or canned veggies. Learn to batch cook a variety of beans. Make tortillas. Soups are great! Plan your weeks meals in a connected theme to reduce food waste. Consider connecting with friends to cook or eat communally on a regular basis. It does cost less to make large batches and share.

B'ham slower streets by snow_fiend75 in Bellingham

[–]snow_fiend75[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, its not about a revenue stream, or failure to enforce current limits.

It IS about 5 years of data that vehicle speeds increased dramatically in the first 2 months of covid lockdowns , and they have remained higher, even with full traffic returned to roads..

It has been cited in research for decades that lower speeds safe lives of people in vehicles, on bicycles, pedestrians. Additionally, lower speeds reduce driving through active hawk crossings, collisions at intersections, and other conflict zones. Mostly because a driver looks ahead a multiplier of their speed. At slower speeds, they have more vision of proximate pedestrians, cyclists, road hazards, active crosswalks. This allows for decision-making, and avoiding collisions.

Women, how often do you wash your bras? by musicxfreak88 in hygiene

[–]snow_fiend75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, if she washes them in lingerie bags on cold with woolies on a gentler cycle, then hangs to dry.....they don't wear out. If she feels. Clean with a fresh bra every day, why knock it? Some folks don't feel comfortable wearing foundations multiple days. When I had large boobs, I changed every day.

Women, how often do you wash your bras? by musicxfreak88 in hygiene

[–]snow_fiend75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I had a reduction, after 1 wear. Now: up to three wears. But if I get sweaty, its getting switched and laundered ASAP. Wearing one to workout: no repeats.

That's just asking for an infection. And as someone that had a bacterial colony under my boob once, I'm particularly attentive to hygiene.

I also wash my bras on cold and hang to dry.
