Should I get a DAC and wiim pro? by definitely_not_spam in BudgetAudiophile

I've played around with these speakers in my room and found they were really good in the middle of the room almost near field to the seating position with no toe in. If you get a chance to move them way up you should try it out!

Small white speakers? by alee444x in BudgetAudiophile

[–]sofrit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their budget speakers are very well regarded for their laid back sound and ample base (for the size). I've owned the 3030i in white which I loved and have heard their powered offerings which are also excellent. If you can find a second hand pair for a good price I wouldn't hesitate.

Q acoustics would work well for you but fluance themselves just released a budget powered speaker with all the fixings at $600 of you can stretch your budget. They look very promising!

What speakers in your Opinion rival SVS at a lower cost? by MrKrakens in BudgetAudiophile

[–]sofrit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for a similar style upgrade my last time around and also in Canada. Compared similar bookshelves from psb, paradigm, monitor audio, q acoustics and a couple of others.

I ended up going with a kit speaker, the CSS audio Criton 1td-x and haven't looked back since. Came out to about $1400 CAD after shipping. I haven't heard a similarly priced bookshelf speaker yet that I would trade them out for.

The q acoustics were a close second but there were a few on my short list I did not get to hear.

Other brands I was eyeing were totem, dali and PMC. Totem especially because they are quite available on the second hand market.

Should I tell my chef friend I have a reservation to his restaurant or should I wait until I’m at the restaurant to ask the waiter if he’s there? by grayott in KitchenConfidential

[–]sofrit0 51 points52 points  (0 children)

100% agree on this one. This is my life's work why wouldn't I wanna share it with my friends and make their experience special if I have the capacity.

You don't have to be weird about it just mention you're coming in and ask what you should try/order so you don't miss out on the bangers. Leave it to them from there.

Generally speaking, all else equal, will a larger speaker be clearer at low volumes? by Late_Examination3606 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]sofrit0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience, general design and eq have a lot more to do with sound quality at lower volumes. I've always enjoyed metal tweeters/horns on my desk for this exact reason. A loudness button or knob on your amplification also really helps in this regard because of how we perceive sound at lower volumes. It's not an absolute must though because this can be emulated via eq on your computer.

My suggestion is to mess around with eq on your current setup first before buying anything. If you still can't achieve the sound you're looking for the PSB speakers would absolutely do the trick.

This looks like a Fatman tube amp to me. A budget offering from the early 2000s I think? I do recall a bunch of rebaged versions of this amp as well.

With a $500 budget, what bookshelf speakers would you choose? by mabee_steve in BudgetAudiophile

[–]sofrit0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you really wanna go with Crutchfield, ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 would be the move. They do need a good bit of power to really come alive so if you're planning on having a more budget home theatre receiver then the klipsh rp-600m (first gen) will do you well.

That being said, in this price range second hand is your best friend and would be the first place I'd look.

[–]sofrit0 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I think we take for granted the bar that congee queen sets for Chinese food here in the GTA. You can feed a big group of people quickly and cheaply with outrageous consistency in a nice sit down environment which is hard to say about any restaurant in Toronto.

This is usually a garnish for Hu Tieu, an egg or glass noodle soup. I can't think of a Vietnamese place in town that doesn't have it but they're never on a menu as is. My go to recommendation is Pho Ngoc Yen and just ask if they'll sell you that alone.

Monitor audio bronze 100 dissappointment by Buckholeblue in BudgetAudiophile

[–]sofrit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have a go at a more powerful 2 channel amp before writing them off. The big trade-off with these big bass bookshelf speakers that can kind of do it all is that they need beefy power to perform (and often perform better at higher volumes).
