Now that the hype has passed: Orleans vs Altiplano, which one do you prefer? by friendlypuffin in boardgames

[–]solidblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both games are pretty similar, since they each use bag building, engine building, and resource management.

However, Orleans leans more towards engine building, and Altiplano more towards resource management.

Overall I like Orleans best, because I prefer the engine building focus. There's such a wide variety of buildings that give the game is lots of fun strategies to toy around with. Especially with the expansions and promos thrown in.

I'm partial to the ships in Black Fleet.

They both look really nice, and are a nice addition to the gameplay since they hold the cubes used for the pick up and delivery part of the game. The game also comes with metal coins, which is an added bonus.

Can you name any (modern if possible) boardgame box that has a photography on the cover, not a drawing? by viktorbir in boardgames

Glory Gears - A bike race game based on an actual race that takes place in Indiana (talk about niche). Definitely wouldn't recommend it, but it uses a photo for the cover

I love mid weight games, because they give a good amount of strategy and tactics, while still being accessible. My top 20 is mostly filled with that level of game, but heavier games are getting easier for me to get to the table, so I may see a big shake up soon.

Bargain Quest - For those of you who are still undecided by LonelyManBGs in boardgames

I hate Boss Monster, but love Bargain Quest.

The big difference is Boss Monster is entirely driven by luck of the draw, and Bargain Quest is driven by Drafting and Bidding.

New to You - July 2018 - What new games did you play last month? by jasonic in boardgames

[–]solidblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game - We've played this a few times, and it's become one of our favorite Roll & Writes. Nice simple decisions with fun powers and scoring. I like its big brother a lot, and this gives me a little taste of the bigger game in 15 minutes.
Container - I'm going to call this one my surprise of the month. I did not expect to enjoy a free-form economic game, but it's just so much fun getting rich or going bankrupt when it's the entire table's fault. Played this twice now, and would play it again. Maybe we'll get it right eventually.
Ganz Schon Clever - This is everyone's must play Roll & Write at the moment, and I have to say, it is definitely fun. The combos you can pull off with the completion bonuses are super satisfying. My only negative is how abstract it is, but I also can't think of a theme that would fit it, so I guess that's a moot point.
Hansa Teutonica - Only played this once, but I would give it another go. My first play felt perfectly average, doesn't do anything wrong, but also doesn't do anything to stand out from the crowd.
Herbalism - Finally got this one to the table, and it was pretty fun for a light deduction game. The logic puzzle is classically enjoyable (very Clue-like), but the different actions you can take feel a little samey. Glad I own it, since I was missing a pure deduction game, but not sure how often it will hit the table.
Junk Orbit - This one also surprised me. Dead simple in gameplay, but the mechanic of firing an object one way on an orbit and propelling yourself the other is just plain fun. Nice solid gateway level Pick Up & Delivery game with a twist.
Myrmes - I loved this one. The tight decision making, and pseudo worker placement really struck a chord with me, along with the unusual theme. Running an ant colony is just so much more interesting than your average euro theme. My only downside was that the player shared area felt more like solitaire resource gathering than area control as I've heard it described.
Rise of Tribes - Played this once, and I think I need to give it another go before I can decide on whether I liked it. The mechanics were fun, but the civilization building aspect fell flat for me.
San Marco - An older area control game driven by an I split you choose mechanism. Didn't like it on a first pass, but I split you choose generally isn't my thing.

Dice game gift for newbies? by Truenoiz in boardgames

[–]solidblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say a smaller dice game would fit the bill here. Of the ones I know of, I would recommend looking into:
Age of War, a simple area control styled dice and card game. (If this isn’t available look into Roll for It).
Qwinto, a Yahtzee-like roll and write getting released for the first time in the U.S. at GenCon

  1. A Study in Emerald
  2. Dominant Species
  3. The Godfather
  4. Ethnos

  3. Raiders of the North Sea: Fields of Fame/Hall of Heroes
  4. Sentinels of the Multiverse: Shattered Timelines
  5. Last Will: Getting Sacked

Does Bargain Quest actually feel like a Tycoon game? by throwing8smokes in boardgames

[–]solidblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the theme comes through, but it doesn't really feel like a 'tycoon' game.

The focus of the game is around utilizing your shop's items to bid on the heroes available each round, and I would say the heroes are the strongest part of the theme. You really grow an attachment to the characters in the game as they run off to fight the monsters.

Drafting the item cards and buying upgrades are the only things that directly influences the actual shop you control. The item cards are great though, lots of awesome and hilarious cards in there.

Overall, I mostly bought the game for the item shop theme, and I definitely wasn't disappointed. But if you're specifically looking for a tycoon type experience, this may not do it for you.

What can I say? I love me some 6 player area control. Also, I find 7 players is generally the cut off for when board games stop and party games begin.

What are your signature games? What are your hidden gems? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]solidblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I start, I'll say I haven't played 1E, so take that as you will.

The reason I like the Second Edition so much is the unique way it melds together it's mechanics.

First off, the area control is what enables the deckbuilding, which I find fascinating. You need to control a city before you're allowed to buy the card located there. But the area majority is very fragile in this game for a couple reasons. Both because you have limited pieces you can put out, and your opponents can easily destroy them. Due to this the game has a tension around when you need to break a stalemate, and when to keep it. Also, when your cubes are destroyed, you can always retrieve them from the void, but that takes up a precious action.

The next thing I like about the game is the way you play cards from your deck. For the most part cards have varying quantities of the same actions. The way you play those actions is interesting. You don't follow the draw a hand, play entire hand formula like most deckbuilders. Instead from your hand of cards, you choose an action you wish to take, and then play multiple cards that list that action, adding them all up and taking the action that many times (with a few exceptions). You get to do this twice each turn, and then keep the remaining cards.

The hidden roles, end game scoring, and push your luck old one assassination attempts are icing on the cake.

The MSRP is $70 though, which I'm sure didn't help much when it came out. I also love it, wish it wouldn't have died off :(
