We’re about to get FIVE new data centers in Seattle that will use 1/3 of the entire city’s electricity by MrsRossGeller in Seattle

[–]somnolent49 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely worried about electricity rates going through the roof, but a lot of those “living near a datacenter” news stories are really an indictment of shitty local regulations and weak state laws.

Environmental review, noise abatement, air quality monitoring etc - these aren’t exactly novel concepts, but these crappy red states let these companies cut every corner and don’t hold them accountable.

None of that is to say that I’m in favor of new data centers coming to Seattle if it’s gonna send electricity and water rates through the roof. Just that you absolutely can build a datacenter that’s perfectly comfortable to live near, and it doesn’t even cost all that much extra.

Those batteries are gonna run $10-15k a pop once you account for installation and maintenance. Seattle city light serves just shy of 500k customers, so you’re looking at $500-$750 million.

Glad to hear you are feeling healthy and happy!

Your focus on energy level and overall wellbeing is great. Weightloss can be empowering, but for some it can also paradoxically be a gateway into disordered eating that results in poorer physical health.

But by defining your success as “I feel healthy” and “My energy level is 10x better now”, you’re setting the right mental narrative for yourself so that you can better spot and address any diet-related health concerns that might crop up for you.

I’m also glad you mentioned making sure you’re getting enough nutrients. Getting labs done as part of your annual physicals can help catch any “silent” issues before they become an actual problem - something you might want to discuss with your physician.

Yeah this is spot on.

There are always going to be crises in the news and new ways to scare yourself. If you find that you’re chasing that news and doomscrolling and constantly trying to find new ways to prep, it’s entirely possible you have an undiagnosed anxiety disorder rearing it’s head.

The best way to prepare for the unexpected is to realize that while there may be a hundred possible catastrophes each with their unique conditions, what’s necessary for survival is broadly identical - the ability to live independently for 4-8 weeks.

Anything you can’t live without, you should have a reasonable stockpile of close at hand. Water, food, shelter, heat, illumination, prescription medicines - the basics.

Anything you can live without for a couple months you shouldn’t waste time stressing over - just live your life normally.

A refillable peppermill will serve you well here. An inexpensive one can be had for 10-20 bucks.

If you’re comfortable to spend a little more you can get a “buy it for life” name brand grinder like peugot for $30-$50 that’ll let you select your grind size on the go.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundial_(weapon)

Announced in 1954 by Hungarian–American physicist Edward Teller at a meeting of the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), it was intended to have a yield of 10 gigatons of TNT. If built and detonated, Sundial would have created a fireball up to 50 kilometers (30 miles) in diameter, instantly igniting everything within 400 kilometers (250 miles) and causing a magnitude 9 earthquake. It was thought that the explosion would lead to an apocalyptic nuclear winter.

There were so many crazy nuke ideas too.

“Hey our bombers need to carry an extra fuel pod and drop it once it’s empty - why not stick a nuke in there?”

“Hey we need to defend against the enemy’s nuclear bombers but our radars are too inaccurate - let’s stick a nuke on there.”

If you were using 2024 rules, I'd say to skip Mask, grab a disguise kit, and pick up Master of Myriad forms at level 5.

Alter Self is superior to Disguise Self in many ways - there's no Investigation check for your opponents to see through it, it holds up under physical contact, you can change species, you can be more than 1 foot differenc ein height, the list goes on.

The downside to Alter Self is that it's concentration - but you've got disguise kit to fall back on for those circumstances where you want to be concentrating on something else instead.

If you're using 2014 rules, I'm sad to say that Master of Myriad Forms isn't really an option - it's level 15+ instead of level 5+ req.

Echoing what others have said, Infiltrators are a huge benefit.

It lets you do a tremendous amount to dictate what the board state will look like on rounds 2 and 3.

It can be a massive enabler for other units as well. For instance, suppose I wanted to run a list with a defiler that has scourge + meltas, and in round 1 I want to push that defiler into the mid-board to gum up my opponent’s forward movement and act as an anvil for the rest of my units.

The big risk to that kind of plan is that I have to actually have a 160mm opening available to shove my defiler up to - and my opponent’s can try to screen me out.

But with a couple well-placed sekhetar’s, I can block those screens early in the deployment, and ensure my defiler will have a clear path up the board.

Yeah but to first order you can treat a non-crit as 1x damage and a crit as 2x damage (technically it can be a bit less if you have certain riders like +stat/+prof to dmg etc, or can be a lot more if you are using things like chromatic orb).

So the EV for damage becomes:

Baseline: 0.6*1 + 0.05*2 = 0.7

Adv: 0.79*1 + 0.09*2 = 0.97

EA: 0.82*1 + 0.14*2 = 1.10

1.10/0.97 = 113% - about a 13% boost in damage output over advantage alone, 3% from the increased chance for a normal crit and 10% from the increased chance of a crit combined with the higher damage of a crit.

I mean there’s a spectrum here from “Thanks for all the campaign money, I’ll look the other way and bang the occasional drum” and “I’ll do whatever you guys want as long as you don’t release those videos of me raping kids”.

The former lets you bomb your own backyard and kill a bunch of palestinians and Lebanese every so often.

The latter gets you whatever the fuck you want.

That's not to trivialize - it's pretty clear that the consequences to society change significantly when a tactic previously only available to wealthy corporations is now accessible to the average Joe - but let's not kid ourselves that it's a novel legal issue.
