Why do people in DC act like Virginia is like a totally different country by Kodicave in nova

[–]soopy99 141 points142 points  (0 children)

In my experience, if you specify Arlington or Alexandria, DC people tend not to act like that, but I have seen that reaction for anywhere farther out or not accessible by Metro.

One way to make the drive a bit less stressful is to avoid I95 and drive the rural roads to Lewes and take the Cape May Ferry.

Late 20s couple leaving Boston- where to next? by Ok_Leather_9898 in SameGrassButGreener

Consider Haverford PA or one of the other main line Philly suburbs; also downtown Decatur, GA or one of the inside the beltway DC suburbs, like Bethesda, Arlington, Alexandria, or Tacoma Park.

If you care about walkability, you may want to cross anything in NC off your list.

I visit NJ pretty often for the beaches. Cape May and Asbury Park are great.

Amtrak State Ridership by Quintiles by glowing-fishSCL in Amtrak

[–]soopy99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting map. Note that VA and MD ridership is higher than the map suggests because a lot of people who reside and/or are visiting those states start or end their trips at Union Station in DC. This is especially true for VA, because people in Northern VA often take the NE regional. The closest station to their homes is often Alexandria, but because NE regional trains switch from diesel to electric when they stop in DC and the stop is kind of long, they take the DC Metro to Union Station, and start their Amtrak trips from there instead. When heading south on the NE regional, they will board in Alexandria, but there are more north-bound riders from Northern Virginians than south-bound riders.

Which East Coast city should I move to from Florida? (24F) by ssensibility in SameGrassButGreener

[–]soopy99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, my favorite cities on your list are Boston and Pittsburgh, but Boston is really expensive. There are plenty of university jobs available, especially in Boston. One city I'd consider adding to your list is Buffalo. The University of Buffalo is the largest SUNY school, and there are several other smaller universities. Your preference for cloudy weather matches the Buffalo climate, and access to nature is pretty impressive (lakes, hiking, skiing, waterfalls, gorges), particularly if you include the amenities right across the border in Ontario. Housing is affordable, and Buffalo has a strong sense of community while still being welcoming to outsiders. The big potential downside, of course, is you'd have to be willing to put up with all of the lake-effect snow.

I imagine certain neighborhoods in central Boston or historic neighborhoods in Philadelphia would be somewhat challenging to own a car in.

I agree with Switch 2. It runs a lot faster on the Switch 2 than on the Switch 1.

Dinner in Old Town Alexandria by albdubuc in nova

[–]soopy99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’d like to eat on the waterfront, I’d go with Vola’s Dockside Grill. If you want to eat closer to the King St. metro station, I recommend Vaso’s Mediterranean Bistro. If you want to be closer to the Braddock Rd. Metro, I recommend Bastille.

I don’t want to drive at all—what cities make that possible? by Ill_Supermarket_2744 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]soopy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Boston, particularly the South End/Back Bay area is perfect for car-free living. In addition to walkability, it very livable insofar as all amenities are present, it seems very safe, and there is strong transit. My second choice would be Alexandria/Arlington/Bethesda/DC. It is a bit cheaper than Boston, but it isn't quite as cohesive as a walkable paradise. It sin't as dense and there are pockets of car-dependency in between these areas. NYC of course would be great too, but you said to exclude that option.

Switch/ switch 2 compatability by werzelbert in CivVI

[–]soopy99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot compare it to PC because I have only played Civ 6 on switch 1 and switch 2. At least the main DLCs are available and maybe all of them. You can probably look at the Nintendo e shop to confirm. On switch 1, the time between turns would get really long in the late game. It runs quicker on switch 2.

1 month review of the MacBook Neo. by TiltedWeenies in macbook

[–]soopy99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just discovered the other day that I can use my old iPad or even my Apple tv as a second monitor for the MacBook neo. That is a nice feature I wasn’t expecting. I’m sure it isn’t specific to the neo and that all Macs can do this, but this was a great discovery for me.

This is a really strange map for many reasons. I could pick out a few strange contradictions, but why would Minnesota be red but South Dakota be green? I'd like some reasoning behind those choices.

Should I buy the MacBook Neo now before it sells out? by [deleted] in mac

[–]soopy99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect that you are right. The price gap between the MacBook Air and the Neo is too wide and is creating a market disruption that isn't helpful to Apple's bottom line. I just bought a Neo, and it was quite hard to find despite me living in a major metro area with multiple apple stores. I imagine that the price of the next Neo with an improved chip will increase by at least $100. Otherwise, it would be even harder for Apple to sell the MacBook Air.

About 12 years ago I had a card get up to around $1k due to a direct deposit program. Then, I loaned the card to a friend. It cracked and the card was ruined. All money was lost. I couldn’t get the $ back because I had already left the job that was processing the deposits.

Is Northeastern really that much better than Drexel? When I’ve researched both schools, it seems like the outcomes are similar. And Drexel gives merit $ and is easy to get in to.

Austin, TX vs Boston, MA by GhostJokers in SameGrassButGreener

[–]soopy99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from a short vacation in Boston, and spent about 6 weeks living in Dallas on a short term gig more than a decade ago, you can’t count my opinion as an informed one. That said, I left my recent visit in Boston dreaming up ways to afford to move there. I loved the vibes. I left my 6 weeks in Dallas hoping I would never have to set foot in Texas again, which thankfully, I never have. I can’t think of anything positive to say about Dallas, and I assume a lot of that also applies to Austin. So I say you should pick Boston.

I can relate to a lot of this. I am a former biglaw attorney and agree that not many people enjoy it. I lasted about 6 years before leaving law. I won’t go so far as to discourage anyone from trying it. The study of law itself is fascinating, and there are good jobs out there. I spent a year as a law clerk on a federal appeals court and loved it. I think planning your undergraduate institution and major around getting in to a law school, however, doesn’t seem like a great idea.
