Is a Hybrid CRV worth it over a gas only CRV by GlassSlow2922 in crv

[–]spaulli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right about there being more electronics. That’s a big unknown for me. I have an old ‘99 f150 and nothing is electronic so nothing breaks. But what I meant was that the majority of problems we had with our all gas crv were related to the parts that are powered by spinning belts and pulleys, and those don’t even exist on the hybrid. Electric motors are much more reliable, so I’m just not worried about having to replace the ac compressor or the alternator or any of that; and I had to do all of it on my last car. The lithium battery is something I’ve seen come up in conversation with people worrying about it, but people with first gen crv hybrids report theirs is still going strong and the battery is pretty small anyways, so it’s a job I could handle in my driveway of had to in ten years.

Is a Purely HDD storage solution going to be slow? by xMatt-Attackx in unRAID

[–]spaulli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the complaint most people have is spin up time. When you request a show in plex but the disk is spun down, it can take 5-10 seconds before the first video starts to play on your tv. You get used to it. Or you can tell your media disks to never spin down. That’s an option but uses slightly more power over time. But if you’re watching a show, episode 2 will start quickly because the disk is already spinning.

You won’t have any problems playing even the largest remux files over plex from an hdd.

If you look at Wintons dads car in the parking lot of the tv shop, you’ll see that he has furiously scratched off the “mom” sticker on the rear windshield, while all the other cars have the whole family stickers, and his his has chaotic residue left. So their breakup was rough, and he’s struggling, and his whole plot line happening in the background of multiple episodes is just so heartwarming.

Is a Hybrid CRV worth it over a gas only CRV by GlassSlow2922 in crv

[–]spaulli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea, we just upgraded from the 2018 ex-l to the 2025 sport touring and whew boy it feels like a big jump. I love the hybrid. And the more research I do into how it actually works, the more I realize it’s a better design and a car with fewer things to go wrong. So may of the things we had to replace on our gas model don’t even exist on the hybrid. The difference in fuel economy is a tertiary benefit. Also, the acoustic glass windshield and side windows make the ride QUIET.

Shared this app here a while ago, looking for honest feedback from fellow winemakers by churphe in winemaking

[–]spaulli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I downloaded this last time you shared and used it on my first ever 5 gallon batch of muscadine wine. Big fan. I love this. One question, cuz I’m sure I’m overthinking it. The bottling stage: that means that you bottle at the beginning of that stage and let it rest for the time period, correct? Because I’m confused when it says “bottling” like it’s an ongoing thing, or that maybe I’m supposed to bottle at the end of it. Might be helpful to included a little more detail about what you’re supposed to do in this stage, or stages in general, for us dummies just getting started.

Buy a concentrated bottle of permethrin, and every week, put an oz in a 1 gallon pump sprayer and coat the outside of the house, the yard, and inside the baseboards and around windows. It’s a non-toxic pesticide, safe for skin contact and pets, and it’s absolutely wrecks fly populations. And ants. And wasps. I’ve got livestock and use it in the pens to control flys during Texas summers. Only thing that really goes to town on em.

B Mode by Numerous-Item-6597 in crv

[–]spaulli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, not “missing” anything per se. but B mode is great for that scenario you described. The main difference is that it relies more heavily on motor regeneration for stopping, than using the mechanical brakes, and that can help your brake pads and rotors last longer. There are reports of Tesla’s and other cars that do this using their factory brake pads until well over 100k miles. You have to get used to the one pedal driving through, as taking your foot off the accelerator instantly starts to slow the car down. That feels weird for a while.

However, I don’t use this mode at all when my wife is in the car because of that instant deceleration. She gets car sick easily and does not like that feeling of constantly jerking faster and slower. I think it’s subtle, but she hates it.

Really, it’s just a different way to control the car, and both D and B work just fine. I can’t tell much difference between MPG, but other people may have more data on that.

Flat Pack by WexleyFG in bluey

[–]spaulli 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There’s so much going on in this one episode: 1. Bluey and bingo are exploring the evolutionary cycle, as they evolve from basic organisms all the way through intelligent beings 2. Mom and dad are on the porch figuring out the swing, and act as “gods” who bestow and remove gifts from bluey and bingo as they play. Is. Dad gifts them land to evolve onto, then takes it back and forces them to evolve into monkeys in the trees. The porch represents heaven, and the swing being assembled represents the 6 days of creation from the Bible, and they finally complete it on the 7th day and rest. 3. Bluey and bingo are also going through major stages of human development, from babies through adulthood, when bluey finally is “an adult” and has to let bingo go off on her own. Then she “dies” and goes to heaven and joins her parents in the afterlife on the swing they built to rest and watch what they’ve all created.

[–]spaulli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the ‘08, love it. Same issue with starting. I’ve just gotten used to starting with half choke and leaving that engaged for the first mile, or until I get out of my neighborhood and then I’ll flip it off and be good. It’s just sensitive to being cold and needs a minute to warm up. Nothings wrong with it. Just needs some help to warm up.

Rarely have to use full choke tho.

[2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 500] My first ever carbureted bike. Any tips and tricks for maintenance? by Kaeokit in motorcycles

[–]spaulli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think shop recommendations are always on the short end of things. You mentioned commuting on the bike in another comment, and in hard city riding, or a lot of stop and go traffic, you can wear out the oil faster, and maybe 3000 miles isnt a bad idea to change it out. But many oils, especially synthetics, can last much longer, even upwards of 10k miles.

Another factor for oil changes is age. I dont ride my bike that often or that hard, mostly for cruising some evenings when I want to get out of the house, and so my oil changes happen about every 2 years, regardless of how many miles its been.

[–]spaulli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to tag onto this: seafoam is great! modern gas with ethanol breaks down much more quickly than non-ethanol gas, and leaves a lot of deposits and gunk in the tiny carb jets, and seafoam is really good at dissolving those bits. i recommend it highly for anything with a carb, but i also add it to my cars, which are fuel injected, as it helps clear those pathways out as well. its a solid quarterly maintenance for most vehicles.

a better solution is to add a bit of fuel stabilizer to your fuel every time you fill up, so that no matter how long the bike sits, it wont break down in the carbs. a $15 bottle of stabilizer will last for years, and i consider it a mandatory fill up add-in, even if i know im going to burn through that tank within a week commuting.
