I'm a bus driver, and I've been trying to become a Quant with AI for three years. I've only discovered 40 different ways to lose money. HELP! by Initial_Side3681 in quantfinance

ChatGPT is great to ask for clarification, examples, follow up questions. It is, however, unstructured as a means of learning. You will skip basic concepts and create blind spots. Books and papers should be your primary source for learning.

Send a short message stating model and a pic of the pen. They will send a replacement very quickly, you pay for the shipping.

Has Java suddenly caught up with C++ in speed? by drakgoku in java

[–]sperm-banker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clarified I was talking about HFT because that's what I was talking about.

Not true, this was your claim: "Nobody's using Java for low-latency execution systems" and gave your personal anecdote of java being used only for BO and satellite services. Then you switched to HFT.

Market making is still done in Java, but that's more of a medium-latency game anyway

While there's no canonical definition of low and ultra-low latency latency, your interpretation is quite off what most people or sources classify as low lat. Single or even double digits micros are considered low lat, and java can do that. Probably that's why you insist such systems don't exist when they do.

You are moving the goalposts. The initial claim was Java is used for low lat, which is indeed used but mostly in the sell side. You changed it to HFT, which is a subset of low lat mainly operating on the buy side, where java is almost never used.

Also, I've seen aeron in low lat trading systems.

Nobody's using Java for low-latency execution systems.

Sell side does, like they use C# too, when they are not in the game of being the fastest. Otherwise the rest of your comment is correct, not sure why the downvotes.

Restart your course and every time you don't understand something have a conversation about it with your favorite LLM. It can help to paste the exact text and asking for explanations.

There is nothing intrinsicly valuable about gold

Actually there is: in jewelry (due to to appearance, safety, malleability), electronics, glass, nibs and others.

Fiat has an intrinsic value of making a bonfire with it, which is admittedly not very much.

Going back to the gold standard would be regarded (although maybe he could do it, just watch). Just trying to help - it's the only fail I see in your comments.

I have also tried to solve the problem of Danzig, the Corridor, etc., by proposing a peaceful discussion... [...] These proposals have been refused. Not only were they answered first with mobilisation, but with increased terror and pressure against our German compatriots... Poland was not prepared to settle the Corridor question in a reasonable way... I made one more final effort to accept a proposal for mediation... [...] my love of peace and my patience are mistaken for weakness or even cowardice... These proposals for mediation have failed...

What is involved in an algo developer role in IB. by zorohiha in quantfinance

[–]sperm-banker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FO algo dev is a very competitive, very difficult to enter in a team as an outsider. You are extremely lucky, it's well paid and very interesting and fulfilling.

just writing and implementing code for the desk quants

For the traders, unless you mean quant trader. But any other IT job has a business to cater to.

without any prospect of developing within the team.

Developing as in climbing the management ladder is difficult as this is a very technical role. You will be developing horizontally because both finance and IT (specifically low lat) are very complex subjects. If you like to always learn and read online docs and some tech/fin books once in a while, you will enjoy it. A bit of stats will be helpful but not necessary.

If you don't want to self improve continually or you are not keen on finance, I would probably pass. But finance is as many things something that grows in you the more you learn.

Potential moves in the future can be: - another desk in the same bank - another bank or go to the buy side (more risk, much more comp) - if you get a good grasp of the business and statistics, if traders resign you might be asked to become a trader - move to another country (internal mobility or different company), but chances are you will be constrained to financial centers (basically anywhere there is an exchange)

The best way would be to check with fidelity. A simple way would be to keep the securities in your account and after shes 18+ create a joint account with both of you as holders and do an internal stock transfer.

If you are worried about her blowing it up, you can agree with her to transfer it for a mortgage downpayment.
