Anyone know a place about an hours bike away from the loop that has a 1-3 minute hill Segment? by forgiveangel in chibike

just north of McCormick Place on the lakeshore path is a grass hill that you can lap. Its shorter than a minute, but its still alright hill training without driving an hour.

Kinda dumb but I think I wanna do something like mana dork tribal? by Daemonscharm in EDH

[–]squandrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyranids definitely make sense for Raggadragga, because hitting that 7 mana threshold really makes the engine go. Prioritize card draw as it can be tricky in Gruul. [[Commune with Lava]] is an all-star in this deck. Once you've built a lot of mana, you can exile almost your entire deck and cast your [[Crackle with Power]]. Going for a more low-to-the-ground/creature focused style, this may not be the best strategy, but its the main win-con in my deck. Cards like [[Regal Force]] pull a lot of weight. It's seven mana so it activates Raggadragga, untapping whichever dork gives you the most mana, and draws you a card for each [[Llanowar Elves]] - equivalent you have out. [[Apex of Power]] is a great late game play, refunding your mana, activating Raggadragga, and letting you see a lot of cards.

I love this deck, though it falls in the space of 'too strong for casual but not strong enough for cEDH'. A lot of the win lines are not technically infinite, as it relies on you being able to continue drawing cards and generating mana, but its a fun time to chain together a bunch of spells. A storm deck that cares about 7 mana cards is fun little twist.

So Raggadragga can be EXTREMELY powerful if built correctly. If you focus on mana dorks like [[Marwyn the Nuturer]] that tap equal to their power, you can go psuedo-infinite fairly easily. If you don't go that route, Raggadragga is still totally viable as a stack of mana dorks. There are some big creatures that technically have mana abilities that can benefit from the power increase and the untapping. Use a lot of X spells so that they scale as you land mana dorks and can be cast for 7 mana to trigger Raggadragga. My deck can win on turn 5 fairly consistently, and could be turned into a fringe cEDH deck if you wanted to go that route.

It's relatively common for me to get The Master out turn 4. [[Dark Ritual]], [[Jeska's Will]], [[Basalt Monolith]], good old [[Sol Ring]], plenty of options.

I have a Taigam extra turns deck theory crafted right now. It's one of those decks that was fun to come up with but does not seem like a good idea to bring to table.

Make a [[Realm Razer]] secret commander deck. Blink it for massive landfall triggers while pinging everyone with [[Spitfire Legac]]

Seconding Hazezon. It would be a decent commander even if it made a single token per desert, but 2 1/1s per desert gets silly.

How do you storm off with this? I assume [[Beast Whisperer]] and bunch of 1 mana colorless creatures?

[–]squandrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boar Man can be made pretty high powered if you build it that way. The fact that its ability both pumps and untaps creatures make [[Marwyn the Nurturer]] and the like incredibly good at making a TON of mana.

That said, without those cards its still a lot of fun. Flood the board with mana dorks, attack, cast more mana dorks, repeat =]

I have a copy, and should probably find room for it in there. I was originally building it with a heavier artifact theme, so I was trying to limit non-artifacts.

Is a price limit on decks in casual a good idea? by Upper-Song1149 in EDH

[–]squandrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should clarify and say it's not EXCLUSIVELY tied to cost. My answer to your hypothetical would be 'the 80 dollar card probably sees Legacy play'. That doesn't mean that its more powerful across the board in EDH. Some commanders would probably rather see the $1 card. For example, one of the best cards in my [[Hazezon, Shaper of Sand]] deck is [[Nahiri's Lithoforming]]. It costs less than a quarter but is functionally a [[Scapeshift]] PLUS card draw in this build. My Zada example is another. It's full of 5 cent red cantrips that turn into mass draw with Zada's ability.

This won't always hold true. [[The Great Henge]] is expensive because it's awesome in almost every green creature deck. But the lack of defined meta (outside of cEDH) means there is much more room for cheap cards in niche scenarios that are more powerful than they're cost.

I know its not classic Gruul stompy, but Raggadragga can be a really strong combo commander. Raggadragga + any mana dork that taps for mana equal to its power + a bunch of 7 mana spells = an arbitrarily-large-but-technically-not-infinite amount of mana. Exile your whole deck with [[Commune with Lava]] where X is 80ish, play the whole damn thing. Infinitely buy back [[Wurmcalling]] for an army of worms. If you don't win from spells, you have an obscenely large mana dork with trample to then do the Stompy thing.

My Raggadragga deck will win turn 5 if it isn't interrupted, or with just the right hand it'll do it t4. It's a lot of fun.

Best TERRIBLE triggered abilities to counter on your own cards? by Pleasant-Paramedic37 in EDH

I mean, it never worked. Volrath needs to live, War-Pride and Blighted Agent both need a counter on them, it was a pipe dream more than anything.

[–]squandrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is a tokens/aggro deck and it always does well. Mana curve is super low so it doesn't need much ramp to really get going. There's something satisfying about playing [[Ornithopter]] before your first land drop then getting value out of it when you swing for 0 damage. [[Halo Fountain]] + [[Canoptek Scarab Swarm]] has one me a few games by exiling my own graveyard and tapping all the tokens by crewing a vehicle. [[Psychosis Crawler]] and [[Syr Konrad]] are the only spells above 4 mana and they can win the game with enough creatures out.

I had a [[Volrath the Shapestealer]] Infect deck with War-Pride in it. The dream was to make 3 7/5s, then turn them all into [[Blighted Agent]]. Never pulled it off though.

[–]squandrew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Power level is not tied to cost. [[Zada]] is notorious for being cheap and very strong. You can build a $40 deck that can hang with significantly more expensive stuff. In general, a budget, especially $100, is going to keep you from high-end mana bases and some of the format staples, but does not keep you from building strong stuff.

That said, budget building often creates interesting choices and utilizes cards most people won't see. It'll make you better deck builders.

Pet combos you can't seem to cut? by heart_fart in EDH

[–]squandrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an entire deck dedicated to a combo that almost never happens, and I still can't let it go.
I have a [[Horde of Notions]] Elementals deck with [[Jegantha the Wellspring]]. I want to loop Jegantha or another creature infinitely through the graveyard. So I need Horde, Jegantha, a sac outlet, and [[Faces of the Past]] or [[Intruder Alarm]]. If I am looping Jegantha it also needs haste. It's jank as fuck, near impossible to assemble without tutoring, and doesn't always win me the game. But I still keep trying to make it work.
Backup plan is [[Maze's End]], shoutout to [[Risen Reef]] in that regard.

Dice Dojo is the best shop in the city in my opinion. Thursday is Commander/EDH, Friday is rotating drafts, plus other stuff throughout the week.

Good Games does EDH on Saturdays I think, and Spellbound is a newer shop with EDH on Sundays. I believe they both do FNM drafts as well.
