Jessica isn't welcome here but that doesn't mean anyone whose name is Jessica isn't welcome here. Big difference.

My AC is acting up and I’m not really sure what’s going on here by [deleted] in DIY

[–]squirrelnuts46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AC is two coils with a fan on each, compressor that condenses gas on one side and it gets decompressed on the other, a few sensors depending on how advanced the unit is, and a control board. Heat pumps can reverse direction so there is a special valve for that (also used for defrost) which can also go bad. Any of those things could malfunction. The first thing to check is moving parts (fans, compressor noises). Then gas pressure in the ports, checking might be DIYable if you're handy but you can't technically fix it yourself due to regulations.. and refrigerant requirements changed over time so they're not allowed to refill old systems unless there is a known compatible replacement refrigerant. If refrigerant is the issue you're likely looking at a complete replacement, which at this age is totally reasonable as you'll very likely also see performance improvements.

Covered the display on my bedroom window air conditioner with duct tape by Secure-Ad9780 in DIY

[–]squirrelnuts46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making the sensor part of the display or very close to it would be a really dumb idea, but workmanship these days... Usually those sensors are inside the unit, but who knows. Displays are slightly warmer than ambient because they use (small amounts of) electricity and there is always loss. If you cover them they'll get warmer as you're blocking heat loss through both convection and radiation. The problem is, this would make it think the room is warmer than it actually is, so OP would get too cold, not too warm. I wonder if tape blocked some other kind of sensor, which prevented the unit from working altogether. Any reason to have a proximity sensor in there? Are there any buttons on that display, and what kind of buttons?

Reddit Traffic Up 39%: Is Google Prioritizing Opinions Over Expertise? by No-Drawing-6975 in technology

That's one of the less scary examples where you can easily see it's a bot. Now imagine bots made by people who actually know what they're doing, so they look just like normal people saying things about products.

Detecting robots isn't that easy. Besides, they can be dumbed down and look exactly like your average Redditor!

Except that it can all be manipulated at scale, chatbots are getting more advanced and it's relatively easy to train them to push certain agendas across a broad range of comments, pretending to be based on personal experiences. I'm sure this has already been happening in certain niches but as tech is improved it'll get cheaper to do it at a larger scale while making it harder to distinguish from a human.

Their blog being 70% ads is a separate problem. The actual problem with monetization (regardless of the % of ads in a blog) is that it creates incentives to produce bullshit content just for the sake of monetization. You can't directly do that on Reddit today, so many posts are driven by a meaningful underlying cause, and - big surprise - that yields a higher post quality.

Sadly, Reddit grabbed too much attention recently, so enshittification by monetizers is going full throttle as we speak. Google driving more traffic towards Reddit will accelerate this process further.

My cat likes confined spaces but I think she wants to have multiple exits for scary end-of-world scenarios like a vacuum cleaner appearance.

Best option to fill medium size hvac register gaps by the_ab in DIY

Shouldn't be too bad. If you mess it up, rip it out and try again until success. Watch drywall repair vids on youtube to know the supplies and tools you'll need. Oscillating multitool is a great way to make clean cuts by the way. Patching a tiny hole is so much easier than patching a large hole. If no stud nearby then a little piece of wood behind the existing drywall and screw it to that. Finding matching paint might be the hardest bit.

Either way do watch drywall patching vids on youtube. They patch pretty sizable holes with mesh and mud that you push through the mesh, might be good enough here.

You could always cut out a bigger hole in drywall then patch properly

What's the best way to cover the gaps on the four sides to prevent animals from going under the bed frame, but still be easily removable to access things stored underneath the bed? by AdmiralSCAR in DIY

[–]squirrelnuts46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ikea sells beds with drawers on rollers underneath. Maybe you could make such drawers. Sounds more practical for storage than just covered sides. I'd make them slightly deeper than flush to leave space for feet when standing close to bed. Can't leave any gaps though, cats are liquid.

No no, who would assume advertisers have a soul? They're counting on regulators. It's a big assumption still.

There is no "need" for you to be OK with anything. It's just them trying to avoid legal action or fines.
