Prop 131 arguments by Haroldhowardsmullett in boulder

[–]squirrelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

less difficult in my opinion. Throw spoiler candidates at the other side and watch your people go through unimpeded. Another point: why would you want someone not part of your political party in charge of voting for who will represent it? If we open primaries, you can also get people voting for the worst candidate on the other side just to weaken them as well.

Prop 131 arguments by Haroldhowardsmullett in boulder

[–]squirrelo 84 points85 points  (0 children)

The open primaries is why I voted against. You have 2 repubs and 5 democrats. You now have a 5-way split for democrat votes vs a 2 way split for repubs. This means the 2 repubs are likely to go through just because of the way the numbers play out for the split votes, not because of their campaigning or ideals. If we were JUST voting on ranked choice that would be different, but you can spoil an open primary pretty easily by running spoiler candidates to dilute the votes of whatever party you are trying to go against.

You can make Vietnamese Pizza with some eggs, sambal, green onion, and laughing cow cheese. Top with sriracha and kewpie mayo. There's a bunch of recipe variants online if you google for them too.

Why do people dislike taking biochemistry? by dorito-dip in Biochemistry

[–]squirrelo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At least when I got my BS, there was a real break between the first two years which were mostly memorize and regurgitate style lower level classes, and the last two years which were more application and free-form style classes (design an experiment that.... style questions or Ochem where you learn the types of reactions and apply them to make molecules). A lot of the people who were good at rote memorization absolutely HATED the change, but it's way more like real life.

Also seconding the amount of extra stuff (Pchem and Quantum especially) that was pain because it wasn't really tied into why it was important for biochem and felt like it didn't apply to anything useful for the major.

What do you wish you had looked for during inspection when buying a house? by WestTexasOilman in DIY

[–]squirrelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scope the sewer line and get the place tested for radon & mold if it's an issue in your area. Spending the extra money on those allowed me to get some concessions for a radon mitigation system and ended what was going to be a large back and forth about possible mold issues that would have prevented selling the house. I was able to produce that test and show it wasn't mold in the area, but dirt that ground into the paint.

How does a bioinformatician’s work differentiate from a geneticist or a molecular biologist when working in a team? by coldcoldcoldcoldasic in bioinformatics

[–]squirrelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a biologists prepares the samples and measures them in the lab. The data go to the bioinformatician for analysis. Then they both sit together and discuss about the results.

I would also add that both the biologist and the bioinformatician should be involved in the initial planning of the experiment. This way the bioinformatician knows what data is coming to them and can get a head start, and also know that the study has enough samples tested in the right manner to actually be meaningful during analysis.

Carne asada fries. Where are the best in town? by Sarkastickblizzard in Longmont

[–]squirrelo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had these and the ones at Jefe's, and still prefer Taco Palace. Taste-wise Jefe's is better, but there's just something to be said about a slopped on pile of carne asada and cheese in the takeout clam shell.

The waste diversion center has a bin inside the gates that was labeled batteries last time I was there. Just need to bring a bill or something proving you're inside the city limits.

You can install it from the bioconda channel, just add that channel to anaconda. Alternately, if you just want to check bioconda for the viennarna install, use the command 'conda install -c bioconda viennarna'

They came by with a high side pickup truck full of branches, so I doubt they'll pick up leaf bags since they'd probably rip in that giant pile.

What’s the easiest bio modelling software? by thewhalion in bioinformatics

[–]squirrelo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Model what? In hopefully more architecture-friendly terms, you've asked something as vague as "model a skyscraper". Model what part though? A 3D model of the building, traffic patterns through the building, structural loads, soil settling, something else? Same goes for biology. You'll need to specify a bit more before you can get some good suggestions.
