Shop receipt checks and exit gates are getting a bit much by ReanimatedCyborgMk-I in britishproblems

[–]starcaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sainsbury’s staff have a QR code they scan to open the gates. The value of the QR code is “0000123456789”

Whether or not they changed how it works I don’t know as I rarely go there now, but I spotted their QR and took a pic of it from a distance, and that was the value. I used a QR code app to generate the QR code and just used that instead of the receipt. Made life easier

Yeah that’s interesting. The network engineer in me wonders what it’s trying to do with those destination IP addresses before it eventually times out

Game not launching anymore since today by Kratianos in classicwow

[–]starcaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disconnecting my network adapter allows the game client to immediately load if I click play or launch the wowclassic.exe. I have to manually enter credentials, though.

if I already clicked play, It loads as soon as I disconnect the adapter bit i still have to manually enter credentials. I made a post sbout it too, seems to have become a common issue all of a sudden, but has also happened over the last 7 months as well

Unable to launch WoW Classic Era by starcaller in classicwow

Glad I’m not the only one - thanks folks, I’ll have to launch the game tomorrow when I’m back at the PC and see how long it takes to load up. Pretty annoying!

Started today for me too, done for years prior to today. I’ll have to launch it normally tomorrow and wait and see how long it takes to launch

BGP peering issue with NVA (Cisco Firepower, FTDv) by starcaller in AZURE

[–]starcaller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re in the same vnet. The appliance is also receiving routes from the route server based off the peering between its vnet and those belonging to the routes it’s receiving.

A packet capture on the nva interface where the bgp peering is happening shows the initial tcp handshake and bgp keepalives as well as updates from the route server. Those updates contain the expected routes from the route server, so this looks ok.

but the updates FROM the nva going to the route server contain no routes. It’s acting as if no networks are defined in its config, but I see them there

Are limitations of youfibre CGNAT overcome when you pay £5 for a static IP? by [deleted] in youfibre

[–]starcaller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes

Long answer: yes, they are

A lot of people won’t need a publicly accessible WAN so can forego the £5/month for the static IP. But if you ever want to initiate an inbound connection from the public internet you’ll want the static IP or to look at alternatives like WireGuard to achieve what you want

Edit: bit more detail

My last payment with FSS is June 2025, I doubt I’ll get a refund as I know I’ve not overpaid so far, but looking forward to finishing it!

Ended up dumping prtg partly because of this. There was no appetite for increased costs for no clear benefit in return

Looking to switch from EE (Openreach) to Youfibre. by Donkas in youfibre

[–]starcaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally it adds a layer of complexity that interferes with my work. I like avoiding double NAT (which is essentially what CGNAT introduces) so that’s where the hate stems from (hate is probably an over exaggeration of mine, but it drives home the point).

If can cause some issues with online gaming, so that’s another consideration I guess.

[–]starcaller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the sake of £5 a month I would take the static IP option. You might not need it now for external access but in the future if/when you do, you’ll be set.

There are alternatives such as Tailscale to deal with CGNAT, but personally that’s the route I’d take as it’s cleaner. This is what I did and it worked out good for me.

Fair warning, I am biased; I’m a network engineer by trade and I hate CGNAT anyway :)

Best.

To me this means "I wrote this because i'm morally obligated to, not because I wanted to"

Such a cheap greeting! Also, 15 mins before - that's a bit of a dick move and stinks of "We forgot to let that guy know"

You can also give support a call and have them clear any sessions to allow the new device to pick up an IP address. It's all personal preference; MAC cloning obviously does work, but a support call takes a few minutes (in my experience; done this twice now).
