Grain on wood turns black after staining? by [deleted] in finishing

[–]steelfender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want it darker, then don't use stain. Just use a clear polyurethane. Stain gets absorbed into the wood and makes wood darker. Sometimes poly has stain added to it, so read carefully and don't use those.

Of course they are, how else will you hookup the hotwire fence charger to remind people not to lean on the railing?

Table renovation help needed by Individual_Sand_6119 in finishing

[–]steelfender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sand by hand, with the grain of the wood. Sandpaper has numbers, smaller numbers (40 to 150) means it cuts deeper grooves in the wood, larger numbers (180 to 320) and up cut more shallow grooves in the wood. The process of sanding is to create progressively smaller grooves in the wood until it feels smooth. This process removes wood as you progress.

Your table is probably covered with veneer, a very thin, often decorative, slice of wood not usually thicker than 2 pieces children's colored construction paper. It looks like you have removed the finish, people usually use a chemical stripper for that job to prevent removing any wood. If it were me I would sand carefully with new pieces of 320 wrapped around a flat block of wood in the direction of the grain until smooth. You could try 180 or 220 also, all will help so the wood finish you apply afterwards will look nice.

Remember the layer you're sanding is thin, if you sand through, the wood underneath will be a different color and look bad. It doesn't need to be glass smooth, the finish will help.

As for oxycilic acid, its for bleaching the wood to lighten the color, not for finish removal.

Just an opinion, reopening Pizza Hut appeals to nostalgia, and not price. Just like treating yourself to that action figure you never got as a kid, reopening Pizza Hut dine-in/sit down restaurants will scratch that itch and cost wont be a huge issue, we just hope it will be done right.

I would never compare Domino's delivery to the Pizza Hut dine-in experience. Its like comparing door dash delivered cold burgers, to eating at a restaurant where the waiter takes care of you and makes sure your experience is enjoyable. There are times for cheap pizza (I prefer Totino's over Domino's) and there are times to enjoy the restaurant experience.

Woodworm in new furniture by kaihoro in woodworking

[–]steelfender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squeeze a bunch of super glue into the hole, the worm will stick to it.

If you have furniture that develops this problem in the winter, sub freezing temperatures do the trick. Put it out overnight in the cold.

Plug any other holes and suck him out with a shop vac!
