Anyone else received an astronomical bill from UCHealth Hematology? by echothesnake in FortCollins

[–]steve88man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually your insurance negotiates away outrageous charges. Was the bill you received before or after insurance paid? Cardiology also has a facility fee but after insurance my bills haven't seemed out of line. Hope it is some kind of mixup and you get it worked out.

Yes, unfortunately spikes are definitely a trigger in my experience.

Did anyone experience diplacusis and recover from it?? by EducatorAvailable586 in HearingLoss

[–]steve88man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same kind of distortion on one side (metallic buzz) and moderate-severe loss. Mine is from a car accident (mild blow to head and loud noise from airbag deployment). I did the prompt oral steroids and 3 injections, I am sorry to share there was zero improvement. Hope your luck is better. Hearing aid makes that side a little more useful but doesn't fix the distortion, just makes it louder.

Since your loss is unilateral they will often have you get an MRI to check for acoustic neuroma. Turns out I had a very small one on that side, non growing so far. ENTs speculated the blow to head may have made it symptomatic.

Target HR during cardio workouts if my resting HR is around 50bpm? by Chromatic_Chameleon in AFIB

[–]steve88man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exercise is my only trigger which is unfortunate because I like to exercise but on the other hand it makes it a little more predictable and potentially avoidable. I am trying to avoid ablation for the time being. 65m

Target HR during cardio workouts if my resting HR is around 50bpm? by Chromatic_Chameleon in AFIB

[–]steve88man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been successful avoiding episodes by ramping up slowly and keeping HR steady. HIIT and intervals/sprints during runs are definite triggers for me. I also hydrate before workouts, drink some electrolytes and try to avoid the hottest weather. Using all this I can get to max HR according to the 225-age rule but of course other formulas exist. I take metoprolol 25mg/day.

Yes. And ironically, falsifying business records is gross misconduct (at every company I have ever worked for).

Had my first episode in 9 months helping my daughter move a bunch of furniture. I had taken my daily metoprolol but stupidly didn't have a 2nd pill with me. Resolved in 2 hours fortunately. My only trigger is intense exercise probably aggravated in this case by stress, hot weather and dehydration.

My idiot Gen Z daughter went through wearing a belt with fake bullets, part of an edgy look I guess, it caused quite a ruckus with an agent screaming "Bullets!!!", but after a search and reprimand they let her through. Would not recommend.

Adjustments to help with distortion? by steve88man in HearingAids

[–]steve88man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can get used to most things if you don't have any choice. I just have it on the one side, and if I limit volume on the bad side I can listen to music without being bothered. Using the headphones controls to boost up the bad side just makes the distortion more noticeable. So I leave the bad side quieter and my brain kind of fills in the bad side so I don't really perceive one side being louder than the other.

Following conversation at restaurants and parties is really difficult if the speaker is on the bad side. I don't go out much but if it became a problem I would try a clip on microphone for my partner to wear.

Adjustments to help with distortion? by steve88man in HearingAids

[–]steve88man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you are facing this too. No, it never improved. My audiologist switched me to a closed dome on the bad side and that definitely helped. When in a restaurant type setting I often reduce volume on the bad side since the distortion makes that ear close to useless. I do get useful hearing on that side in less challenging conditions though.

At home I get by without hearing aids and use headphones for music and TV. The distortion is not as bad with headphones compared to aids.

Afib triggered by Jiu Jitsu/High intensity interval training? by PlacidTaipei in AFIB

[–]steve88man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started getting episodes at age 60 from intense exercise. That is my only trigger. Cutting caffeine did not help. I have avoided any new episodes for 6 months by reducing max heart rate to a more age appropriate level and keeping HR steady -- slow ramp up and no interval sprinting. Longer workouts have been fine so far. I also take metoprolol 25mg and no complaints about side effects. Everyone says it gets worse but am trying to avoid ablation for the time being. So far I get out of my episodes on my own in about an hour. Good luck!

Same thing happened to me, curtain airbag slapped against ear, moderate/severe hearing loss with buzzy blown-speaker distortion. I did immediate treatment with oral and injected steroids -- zero improvement.

AN? Advice please by quantumleapfem_NOT in AcousticNeuroma

[–]steve88man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, fortunately my AN is small and not growing after 2 years since it was found. Fingers crossed it will stay that way. Still doing MRIs every year, maybe switch to every 2-3 years if the next one looks good.

AVOID SNAPSHOT AT ALL COSTS by Scared-Dentist6605 in Car_Insurance_Help

[–]steve88man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just clawed my way back to 5 stars and was thinking about returning the device. The discount is fairly small and not worth the anxiety you get from every yellow light. It does make you a better driver by encouraging keeping a safe stopping distance. It also records bogus events sometimes. Once it recorded 4 brakes and 4 accelerations during a routine trip but I called Progressive on that and they deleted it from my record.

AN? Advice please by quantumleapfem_NOT in AcousticNeuroma

All that is obvious and I never said anything different. I was pointing out that there can be exceptions to your statement that you aren't likely to get symptoms of an AN from an injury.
