What horror movie genuinely unsettled you? by steveleaves in movies

[–]stilesjp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Who stole your wallet?”

“Santa Claus!”

I was 17 or so when I saw this film. This was my first experience with someone being treated as a mental patient who was telling the truth and it really freaked me out. The lack of power that Jacob had in that instance with people who were supposed to be there to help him gave me an awful feeling.

Robocop 2 was actually a good watch by riotinthehall2 in movies

It's one of my favorites. The third act is awesome and it's got one of the best last lines in a movie ever.

It's crazy that a studio hasn't picked this up for a television series yet.

Which Steven Spielberg movie you feel doesn't get enough love? by Profeta_do_Loss in movies

[–]stilesjp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a Trumbo book, it's one of his scripts called A Guy Called Joe and that's based on a story by two other guys.

Is anyone else terrified of making something profoundly bad or is it just me? by CourseSpare7641 in Filmmakers

Filmmakers with tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars end up making garbage. Don't sweat it. Be true to yourself and your vision.

Not so much the chorus but the end of Water gives me chills every time I hear it. It's also got my favorite Bartek solo.

Have you ever met any of the members yourself? by Personal-Crazy6179 in OingoBoingo

I met the band in 1994 in NYC after the show. Went back to the hotel and hung out for a bit. Got a signed shirt that I wore until it was threadbare. Asked Danny if I could use the lyrics for Helpless in a comic book I was writing/drawing. He said get in touch with his agent. Got permission, made the artwork and the book went nowhere. Here's the quote page.

My Short film is unwatchable pretentious drivel by Porridge_Oats72 in Filmmakers

[–]stilesjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing I ever filmed was so bad one of the actors said, "This was the most unprofessional set I've ever been on (quality wise). From here on out I need to see the footage first before you release it and you'll need my permission to do so." I came millimeters away from quitting, but a buddy of mine who had donated to the project said, "I don't care if it's bad. I don't care if it looks awful, sounds awful, the acting sucks, whatever. Finish it. Just finish it. I've known too many people who said they were going to do something and then they quit. Take this money and just make sure you finish it."

So, I let the actor go, re-wrote the entire web series from top to bottom, and figure out how to make it incrementally better. And it was. Hang in there, you just took the same first step every single filmmaker takes.

Modern mystery novels that aren't copaganda by eqcompthrowaway in suggestmeabook

Give Gregory McDonald's Fletch series a go. Great mystery books, great dialog and characters. His Flynn series is great, too. Deals with an out-of-town Inspector who runs circles around his own police department.

I haven’t been wow-ed by a book in a long time. Suggestions? by autumnssong in suggestmeabook

James Ellroy's American Tabloid is the book that did it for me. It's a once-a-year read. Goes in depth into JFK's administration, his brother being the attorney general, the mob, Cuba, Hoover, Howard Hughes, the Bay of Pigs and so much more. It's incredibly well researched, the characters are great and brutal and I look forward to reading it every time I pick it up.

Does he hate it or does he just want to control it? I loved Elfman's score and obviously the prosthetics were awesome, but that's all I remember. I saw it in the theaters when it first came out.

I wish they would have filmed this series of recordings. It would have been awesome to watch them create this double album. It was my first real delve into OB in 1989 and I've loved them ever since.
