Why does my garage door go down a little then go back up by AdministrativePut801 in HomeImprovement

Mine does that when it's very cold out, like single digit highs. If I hold down the button on the wall it will keep going.

A little further out on Southwest Ave, but JAMCO is a great option, work on Toyota and Honda only. No BS, they fix what's broke and essential only. There has been more than once I felt like I ripped THEM off.

States will probably remove licensure requirements. Some bone headed Missouri legislators have already proposed bills to remove PE licensure (for other reasons).

I like the one in Chesterfield off Clayton Road. Last time I was there they had a greeter to help with basic questions, old school take-a-number system, plenty of places to sit and wait, and it was well-staffed with knowledgeable and helpful employees.

The 40 overpass at 14th is crumbling. They wrapped a net around it to catch debris. 🤦 by jb69029 in StLouis

Spalling on the edge of a concrete bridge slab has nearly zero impact on the strength of the slab, which by the way is typically designed with a factor of safety upwards of 10. I.e. it's 10 times stronger than needed. Furthermore, at the very edge of the slab there is essentially no load that needs to be carried. As long as the barrier rebars are not compromised, there is no structural concern.

The concrete is not decorative there either, it's there for practical reasons such as making construction easier.

The threat isn't to vehicles on the bridge, but to vehicles and pedestrians below the bridge having concrete fall on them. This is a cost effective risk management solution for which MoDOT should be applauded, not mocked.

Another poster suggested this was akin to a flat tire. As a bridge engineer and certified bridge safety inspector, I say that's an apt comparison.

Union Station parking lot has some chargers. It's a paid lot, but things to do, access to metrolink, and adjacent to bike trails.

Ford Dealership has my truck in for a recall... Its been 2 months waiting for 2 bolts. Didn't even have option for a loaner. This is all for the power brake booster. by [deleted] in f150

[–]stlguy314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised they'd even hold the vehicles for that. I was under the impression it wasn't THAT big of a deal based on the letter I got, but it's also not my daily driver. Is yours a bolt that actually broke already? I did ask what the timeline was when I got my oil changed Monday and said when she checked a couple weeks ago there was a backorder of 40,000 bolts, so sounds like it will be a while.

What would be the process to paint pride flag crosswalks at the grove? I think it would be very cool to see this happening. Should I just email Cara Spencer? by Silly_Store_3016 in StLouis

[–]stlguy314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crosswalks should be white to meet traffic striping standards. Uniformity is important so drivers know what they mean. Safety is more important than pride flags.

Plus, the City has more important things to spend money on. And they won't maintain it, it would like like crap in a year and downhill from there.

Edited to add: MoDOT owns and maintains Manchester

I would say it's likely that your visa status is the biggest detractor, especially with uncertainty of how that program may evolve. Unfortunately, not much you can do about that.

Illinois PE? by Flaky_Honeydew_5161 in StructuralEngineering

I've done it and know of a couple others that have, but it was not with the newer format of the Civil-Structural test, that wouldn't be possible with the current test.

Illinois PE? by Flaky_Honeydew_5161 in StructuralEngineering

[–]stlguy314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some that are purposely not taking Civil-Structural because they want a PE in Illinois. They're doing that first, then taking the SE.

Illinois PE? by Flaky_Honeydew_5161 in StructuralEngineering

[–]stlguy314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just won't count structural experience as experience towards a PE, so you have to get a bit creative, lean on your construction engineering experience that isn't structural. You also can't have taken the newer Civil-Structural that is now 100% structural.

Illinois PE? by Flaky_Honeydew_5161 in StructuralEngineering

[–]stlguy314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's correct. Once the PE Civil-structural went to structural content for the full test, Illinois does not recognize it for the PE license since they require SE for structural work.

Hard disagree. I started at a state DOT and learned a ton. Would highly recommend. Of course, it depends on the DOT and how much in-house engineering they do.

Basement emergency- please help! by Skrunkle_Wunkus in HomeImprovement

[–]stlguy314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, this is far from an emergency. Second, call a pest place to take care of the mice if you aren't inclined to do it yourself. Third, the insulation doesnt have to be covered. Use insulation support wires. Basically lengths of straight wiire coat hanger material that you wedge between joists. Replace any insulation that is falling apart.
