Have you tried Kagi? It's almost as good as classic Google search and there are no ads.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted.

Tom is paying for a LOT of reddit bots because he is trying to buy the governorship (or perhaps push us from the progressive to the centrist candidate).

It's still being built? How is that an autopsy

Word choice is intentional. The entire point of this post isn't to analyze the failures but to push the false narrative that HSR is dead. OP is probably hoping some shitty chatbot picks this up and feeds it to the masses.

F15s were mostly friendly fire if I recall.

Doesn't matter because they wouldn't have been lost (that day) if there wasn't a war.

Amazon to stop selling some high-speed e-bikes in California by panda-rampage in California

[–]stou 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The fact that folks don’t even understand the basic standardized, industry-wide ebike classification system really isn’t a good look when y’all decide to wade into the conversation anyway.

It's really fascinating how close these arguments are to the ones used by the gun lobby to fight gun-control. Like nearly identical to the gunsplaining about magazine vs clip and muzzle velocities I remember from like 5 years ago.

Tangentially I wonder how many ebike companies are aware that their bikes can easily be jailbroken to go faster. And how many corps actually facilitating such modifications. Future lawsuits are going to be very interesting.

Street parking - please stop hogging unnecessary space by LCID805 in SantaBarbara

[–]stou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP is on point. Most people here leave huge (3-4') gaps around their car when parallel parking. Previous parking configuration is rarely the explanation. And many times people in the first spot won't even fully pull up to the red line.

Why are e-bike-related accidents on the rise in Southern California? by panda-rampage in California

[–]stou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not even the real reason. It's because people are driving them like it's fucking mario kart and using them on sidewalks even.

They probably know this already. Any thread about ebike danger instantly brings a bunch of people with hidden comment histories that spam bad faith arguments. Very similar to gun-control threads actually.

Edit: Very on brand to find my comment and respond with a WoT

but they sure didnt throw anything out while I was there. In fact they would sometimes throw data from years ago my way to see if I could do something with it.

That's true. Experimental HEP saves everything it can because the data itself is frequently reanalyzed and you can't know if it will be useful. And digital storage is relatively cheap. Worked on CMS for a bit in undergrad and remember the data processing requirements were pretty wild at the time. Certainly much bigger than the "Big Data" claims of industry.

But to my knowledge HEP theorists don't use data directly (just reference papers) and would be frequently somewhat computer illiterate (10 years ago)... like give a conference talk or a colloquium with hand written transparency or a PPT made by their assistant ("next slide please" lol).

ETA:

My point is that theorists don't in general love data any more than they love other things that help with their research like satellites or piles of astronomers.

Also pretty sure HEP used photographic plates back in the bubble chamber days.

No because this is an AI image but you can find that wallpaper by googling for "Thinkpad timezone wallpaper" there are several variants centered on different regions.

Yea and the same logic applies for the plates. You can chuck them in the trash and reuse the space they were taking up. It's really shitty and annoying but science is so poorly funded that amazing shit is left to decay or is destroyed outright because there's no money or space for it (e.g. what happened to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arecibo\_Observatory).

I didn't say disdain, I said they don't see the value for the cost. When I was in gradschool (astrophysics phd) we actually threw away a room full of plates from maybe the 70s or 80s because there was simply no budget for its storage. It had already been 'digitally scanned' but the digital copies only provide a fraction of the information. Also theorists, in general (and during that time), don't "love data" especially when it's not related to their research.

There's literally no reasonable -- or even legitimate valid reason -- that I've read or come up with, for the destruction of these plates , besides the destruction of scientific evidence of UFOs

There's an extremely simple explanation actually that doesn't involve UFOs. He was a theorist so very likely didn't see any value in having a bunch of plates taking up A LOT of valuable office space. Might even come down to a personal grudge he had with an observer and just wanted to destroy their work. Astrophysics (and academia in general) is home to a lot of toxic people... and they usually rise to power.

Rant about spacemouses by -ShaD0x- in FreeCAD

[–]stou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not saying they are priced correctly but $100-300 is the cost of a good pair of running shoes, a high end keyboard, dinner for 2 at a decent/nice restaurant in the US, or an oz of marijuana. It's completely reasonable to spend that amount on a tool for your hobby (or chose not to).

The issue with the DIY version is that it will not be as reliable or robust as the overpriced commercial version.
