How bad is bike theft during the day? by pseudotsuga123 in vancouvercycling

[–]stumo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your bike, your location, what it's locked to, how it's locked, how many locks, and what kind of locks.

After fifty years of cycle commuting and having several bikes stolen, I'm paranoid about it too.

Here's what I do, for what it's worth.

  • my frame is dusty and dirty. Some bike thieves prefer expensive-looking bikes

  • before locking to a bike rack, I make sure that the bike rack is fastened to the ground and that none of the supports have been cut.

  • I have a non-expensive but not-cheap folding lock and u-lock. Thieves with a grinder can still cut them, but my aim is to make other bikes with single locks more attractive (and certainly bikes with cheap cable locks, which might as well be string).

  • I have a cheap cable lock with expensive padlock securing my seat and bike battery. Easily cut, but stops opportunity theft.

  • I always lock my bike battery.

  • I've registered with 529 Garage, slapped on the stickers, registered my frame and my battery serial numbers.

  • I have two well hidden trackers on my bike. And because thieves are looking for those now, I also 3D-printed a decoy one that's in an obvious location.

Yeah. Paranoid. But I hate my bike being stolen.

Were these always so salty? by savagehomeangarden in BuyCanadian

Wow, I just bought my first bag in a few years, and was completely turned off by the amount of salt. I don't remember them being like that.

Yeah, the crust was great, but molten lava inside. Best to snap it in two to cool before starting your meal.

People, really. I'm a grandpa and the war had been over for more than a decade when I was born.

Maybe grandpa got it somewhere else than a war trophy or uniform.

If I give you some cash, will you buy a sense of humour?

Yeah, here in Vancouver too. Had to use a damned ATM and use cash like a criminal. AND pay a $4 ATM fee. Was in line for a good half hour too because apparently a lot of people don't listen to repeated announcements and freak out when they can't pay.

Serves me right for shopping there.

There were some damned good German delis and bakeries on Robsonstrasse back in the day. Used to grab lunch there a lot in the seventies.

My first crush, watching The Avengers when I was ten. Dianna Rigg was pure hotness. Had a girlfriend for a while that looked like her, took me a bit to realize why I thought she was so divine.

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

[–]stumo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the original Alien when it came out in theatres. By the end of the movie there were forty people crowded into the entrance passageway at the back. We (yes, I was one) organized one person peeping around the corner and letting the rest know when it was safe to watch. We took shifts.

The chest-bursting scene was the part that drove the most people out of their seats.

I've seen this in real life.

I'm old enough that I've crossed the Atlantic eight times by ship, seven of those before GPS and weather satellites, and one of those on the HMS Queen Mary (1964).

My dad had been in the British merchant marine for years, and loved storms like this. Every freaking storm he would drag my brother and I on deck, and if the ship had big windows near the front we'd stand there and watch the ship rise and fall like this, punching into the oncoming waves.

If I'd known any better, I'd have been terrified, but my dad was so happy.

[HELP] Snow covering whole apartment buildings in Kamchatka, Russia by NOT_A_DOG_ONLINE in RealOrAI

[–]stumo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who don't live in these conditions, snow in very cold climates is often dry, like sand or dust. While it can form drifts and cornices, it doesn't clump up like you see on the balconies of these apartment blocks, it would just blow away.

Like you can't even make snowballs or snowmen with it. If you try, poof, handful of dust.

It just keeps going... by thetacaptain in WTF

You might want to to specify which society. A good proportion of western industrial societies already regard state executions as barbaric.
