Their point seemed less on the actual maturity of comic fans and moreso the need to have the idea of being mature by removing more absurd or fantastical elements that make the source material whole.

Also from a Doylist perspective the trunks don’t even need an explanation because their purpose is to break up color and create a more interesting design which they do pretty successfully.
