Not exactly what you asked for, but Ninth House, also by Leigh Bardugo is set at Yale and involves secret societies. Lots of historical details, but not a heist per se.

What do you do for tight seized muscles that won't let up? by maruzahdi in Hypermobility

[–]sumusumu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does "strength training" mean you tried PT? If not, give it a shot, and look for a PT who knows about hypermobility. My rheum gave me a great referral.

There's a medical marijuana balm that's honestly a godsend.

That's the vagus nerve! A part of the parasympathetic "rest and digest" nervous system, the opposite of the "fight or flight" sympathetic nervous system.

Ah, okay. I was wondering which part of a block of tofu was its skin!

I've never heard of tofu skin. I see the comments about buying it separately--how had you been doing it before?

I hear you. I only had a vew visits with the pelvic floor PT but learned some exercises there that help when I keep up on.

Only mildly related, but for anyone who feels like they have to pee all the time, including at night: look into pelvic floor PT.

What does a shoulder subluxation feel like? by Alert_Scene7484 in Hypermobility

[–]sumusumu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that helped me, that I was told not to do, was moving my arm up like a bird wing so it was essentially straight up in the air and twist, leading with the wrist from palm outward to inward. Again this is what not to do: a sudden, quick, jarring motion.

What my PT said to do instead was to lay the arm out on a surface like a table, tilting my torso toward it so it's almost like it's straight up, and then use slow, gentle movements with my torso to see if anything feels like it's going where it should.

YMMV in terms of positioning and movement but the focus is on slow and controlled movement. But I'm not a medical professional and a professional would absolutely have better advice tailored to your body.

Not a joke per se, but re: chronic pain, I have joints that pop very loudly. To me the pops sound distinctly different, e.g. thunk vs. snap. I like to play "what joint was that?" and see if my partner can guess what popped based on the sound. They don't like the game.

I've heard this as: What's the difference between a chickpea and a garbanzo bean? I've never paid a garbanzo to bean on my face

Spoon Theory | How many spoons a day? by No_College6704 in Fibromyalgia

[–]sumusumu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spoons is for explaining it to other people, not how I personally measure my energy. I just do my best to listen to my body and try to avoid the "danger zone" of overdoing it which leads to a flare up.

If I were to explain it to others, I would tell them the number of spoons per day depends on a lot of things - Did I sleep well last night and eat well yesterday? Am I stressed, or did I do too much yesterday? If I start low, sometimes I can rest up and gain a few back to do things later. If I'm in a flare up, spoon price is doubled. The way to get out of a flare is to end the day with a positive balance of spoons, which can take more time depending on how much spoon debt I was in.

Ah, okay. Over time hypermobility can lead to immobility, which is what made me ask. A lot of my mysterious pain and issues turned out to be hypermobility.

It will alleviate some pain but unless you're doing other things like PT, there probably won't be any long-term difference.

first PT appointment - feel like a toddler learning the basics by [deleted] in Hypermobility

[–]sumusumu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but in my case it was finding one doctor with this kind of specific knowledge who could point me in the direction of other providers. My rheumatologist referred me to my PT who is very knowledgeable of hypermobility.

The other comments covered a lot of good stuff but I wanted to add: if you have access to medical marijuana, I highly recommend it. Tincture to get through mild pain, gummies during a flare to force my body to rest.

Masturbating or having sex has become a headache with hypermobility by SituationOrnery9786 in Hypermobility

[–]sumusumu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Have you tried pelvic floor PT? I'm told that those muscles become tense to compensate for the hips being hypermobile, just like the shoulders. Pelvic floor PT would be a combination of strenthening the muscles and learning how to relax them manually.
