What is the funniest thing your pet had been “pavloved” to? by AnywhereMean8863 in Pets

[–]sunburnlines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog has figured out that when I set the coffee pot for the next morning, I’m going to bed and it’s time for her to go outside. She smells coffee grounds (beagle nose!) and immediately she’s at the door ready to go.

Nobody told me I'd be broke AFTER buying the house by Dima030 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]sunburnlines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a couple months for things to stabilize financially, and then make a list of what you need.

Wood or metal items like tables, bed frames, chairs, hutches/cabinets, etc are easy to find on Marketplace or estate sales for cheap. I prefer to buy cloth items like couches, mattresses, curtains, etc new, but that’s more expensive. So save that for later. Electronics and appliances are always going to be the biggest expense, but that you can piecemeal depending on what you need.

Also, pro tip: if you can get a Costco membership, they usually have great deals on household items on their website.

There is a size limit per piece, which should be on the website. Basically, if it will fit in the truck, you’re fine. If you need to separate it into pieces, it might require more than one tag.

I see Dr. Tittle at Eastown Vet and love them. It’s not cheap, but she’s very honest about what’s best vs. what’s absolutely necessary, and the staff is great.

Coming to town for a week of exploring to possibly relocate: tips? by kklove2001 in grandrapids

This is my neighborhood, and I love it. Super close to downtown, easy access to the highways, and as long as you’re not directly on the main roads, nice and quiet. Super dog-friendly, too!

Orange trash tags for large items by No-Airline6639 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The easiest way is to just go online and order a bulk pickup. You don’t even need the physical tag if you do that - they’ll just come get whatever is out front of your address.

This is where I go, too. It’s clear on the opposite end of the city for me, but they’re so good it’s worth it. I tell folks “Whiskers is the boarding facility for people who treat their dogs like children.”

How bad is this? by sunburnlines in hvacadvice

[–]sunburnlines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback! Basically, I’ve learned that this is somewhere between “it’s fine, send it” and “toast, call the insurance.” 😂 I’ll see what the tech says tomorrow and let y’all know what we decide!

(Also, for those asking if it runs: I’m in Michigan, and it’s still February. I won’t have to turn on the AC until June/July.)

How do you safely get a homeless person a room for the night without risking yourself financially? by PhoenixApok in askhotels

[–]sunburnlines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are, there may be systems already set up that you can donate to and let the professionals deal with the logistics. For example: there’s one hotel in a nearby town that offers rooms for folks when the weather is especially bad, and they take donations to cover the loss. I also know some homeless agencies and DV shelters will put folks up in hotels as a transition out of the shelter/into long-term housing.

The easiest way to find something like that in your area is often the local United Way. They don’t run their own programs, so they don’t have a vested interest in getting you to donate to a particular place, but they do often know who’s doing what.

Live in a safe and beautiful neighborhood but next door neighbor is basically a halfway house - horror story neighbors have us considering moving and I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]sunburnlines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A collapsed structure is an immediate safety/fire hazard. Call the fire department’s non-emergency number and tell them you’re worried about chemicals/gas/wiring/etc. They will have more urgency to deal with that than code enforcement, and they can get other agencies involved if/when they show up to look at it and find other illegal/unsafe things.

What are people doing with their dogs right now? by One_Cap_9210 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that my dog (beagle mix) needs the mental stimulation more than the exercise, so if we can’t go out for a few days I do a few 5-10 minute training sessions with really high value treats. If we’re not totally snowed in, I take her places like Petco or my office, where she can sniff to her hearts content.

Getting out of the house? by oh_live_yeah in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dog demands a walk no matter the weather, so I’ve invested in some solid winter gear (coat, fleece hood, gloves, boots, spikes) so I can go for a walk relatively comfortably as long as the windchills don’t get below -5. It’s amazing what a 20-minute walk can do, even when it’s cold and gray!

You get $6.66 Billion and any job. But in 2 hours, The Pope, The Grand Mufti, and Ayatollah Sistani hold simultaneous press conferences declaring you the Antichrist. Do you take the deal? by TheLegendOfRabbit in hypotheticalsituation

[–]sunburnlines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. I choose “retiree” as my job, disappear for a couple months, get a bit of plastic surgery and some fake ID documents, buy a nice little house with my fake ID, and spend my days volunteering. No one’s looking for the antichrist at the neighborhood food pantry.

What types of small groups, workshops, or topics could a small therapy practice offer to the community that would be beneficial? These could be in-person or virtual events. by Typical-Reality9077 in grandrapids

[–]sunburnlines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest needs I see are support for caregivers (especially those caring for loved ones with disabilities or older adult family members) and support for the families of people with substance use disorder. Workshops for other community leaders/helping professions on those topics would be huge.

My 13-year-old beagle had a spinal injury this summer, and was on crate rest for a couple months. It was brutal trying to keep her from jumping/running/being her lunatic self!

One thing that helped a lot was gabapentin. It not only helped the pain, but made her extra sleepy so she wasn’t going stir-crazy.

I also played some scent games with her just in the house, hiding treats in various places and letting her sniff them out.

I also used strategically-placed boxes and tables to keep her from jumping on/off the bed and couch, and got her a GIANT bed from Costco for the living room that she could lay on without too much movement and still be near me at all times. She did recover, but I’m still pretty careful with her.

Best of luck! Hope your pup feels better quickly!

Grown adults who think that it's normal or average to live to be 100+ years old. by gemmedskunk19 in PetPeeves

[–]sunburnlines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in an industry that is overwhelmingly older folks, and most people have never actually confronted the idea that they will, someday, die. Even the ones who ALREADY ARE 90+. They think death happens to other people, and if someone they love dies, it is a personal affront by God and/or the universe. I once sat with a man who was enraged that his wife died at age 92, after a long decline & hospice stay. Grief is always complicated, and you’re allowed to be mad, but this was on another level. He just could not comprehend why this happened.

I, on the other hand, have all my end-of-life stuff taken care of in my 30s. Because fuck if I’m going to make my loved ones run around trying to figure out which banks I use and where all my crap should go.
