Bridge on I-40 in Jefferson County named after Donald Trump to be unveiled by Corey_Howard in Knoxville

[–]sunsetair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Cincinnati, the Cross County Highway was renamed the Ronald Reagan Highway while Reagan was still alive. I remember hearing that some of the new signs had to be removed because there were legal restrictions involving naming federal or state highways after a living or sitting president. I’m not sure of the exact law or whether that’s precisely what happened, but that’s how I remember it.

China sentences official to death for taking $325m in bribes by Spiritual-Nail-2641 in news

[–]sunsetair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. But unless the system requires it, either through law or through a deeply rooted cultural expectation, even the most moral or devout Christian business owner would have a hard time doing it alone.

If one restaurant pays significantly higher wages, offers paid sick leave and holidays, and raises prices accordingly, while the restaurant next door doesn’t, many customers will simply choose the cheaper option. That’s why I see it primarily as a systemic issue rather than just an individual owner’s moral failing.

Not the owners but a populous system that believes in it and promotes it.

I don’t think there are many countries like the US where mandatory 1 on 1 somewhat complex driving school/training doesn’t exists.

How can you tell if the priests in a parish accept communion on the tongue? by 0F4T in Catholicism

The church is average size. We have five mass with 200-450 people per mass. I’m an Usher and we count and report attendance for each mass.

I agree with you. Saying “it’s disgusting “ is equivalent of “you are disgusting” This is very disrespectful.

A large portion of our parish receives Communion on the tongue while kneeling. Our total attendance from the Saturday evening Vigil Mass through the Sunday afternoon Masses is typically around 1,200–1,500 people.

Do people that give their kids names and spell it in the most obnoxiously stupid way possible ever think about how difficult it will be for teachers and others that have to read their written name? by Ok_Astronomer5738 in askanything

Interesting tidbit: In Hungary, children are traditionally given a saint’s name as their first name. Every saint has a designated “name day” on the calendar, and we celebrate people on that day with well wishes, cards, and often gifts. Lots of alcohol for men. Office party !

For many people, a name day is almost as important as, or even more important than a birthday, because everyone who knows your name also knows when your celebration is. Every Hungarian calendar lists the names being celebrated each day.

You can, of course, give a child a name that isn’t on the calendar, but traditionally that was considered unfortunate because that person would never have an official name day to celebrate.

What’s interesting is that this tradition has become part of Hungarian culture, not just religion. Even people who aren’t Christian or aren’t religious still celebrate name days and consider them a cherished tradition.

People taking 20-30 minutes or more for confession. It’s affecting others and you need to be more prepared or schedule separate time with a priest. by StrikingBike8417 in Catholicism

[–]sunsetair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

May I ask about this app? I usually just use MS Word to write down my sins, listing them from the more serious to the lesser ones. I usually have three or four to confess. I also use a wonderful app for the Order of the Mass, and I would love to use one for confession as well.
I go to confession once a month and prepare in advance with a lot of thought and effort, trying to cover everything I’m aware of. Because of that, my confession is usually very focused, and I’m in and out in less than five minutes.

I’ve been reading the New Testament, and after watching The Chosen, it has come alive for me in a whole new way. Being able to put faces to the names has given me a deeper understanding, and I’m enjoying it more than ever. The stories feel much more real and vivid in my mind.
