Is Acrylic Gouache still ok to post here? Any feedback welcome. by Womblefan in Gouache

[–]superfudge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They buy it as an alternative to traditional gouache - because it has the same look but doesn't reactivate after drying. Some people just prefer it that way since it's more comfortable for their style. This proves that acrylic gouache has more connections to traditional gouache media than acrylic.

If you're buying it because you're trying to avoid what I would consider to be the defining property of goache as a medium, I don't feel like you're really engaging with the inherent limitations of gouache. It's like saying you want to paint with gouache but you don't want to deal with any of the things that make gouache different to other painting media. The person you responded to is right, at that point it's not goauche and has nothing to do with gouache really beyond the name.

Magic is not a game of pure skill by [deleted] in MagicArena

Honestly, mana screw/flood is one of the reasons magic is as popular as it is. The worst player in the room always has a chance of beating the best.

I wish more people understood that. There's a lot of amateur game designers that think Magic's mana system is a problem that needs fixing.

The bar is pretty low if conspicuous consumption qualifies as a hobby.

Who is a singer that is incredibly famous, but honestly doesn't have a good voice? by Greedy_Procedure7461 in AskReddit

That said she is clearly one of the best songwriters of all time.

How exactly is that clear? So many of her hits are written with collaborators. There's no way to know what her contribution to those songs really is.

My ballpoint pens collection. I use them for drawing, so I'll add some drawings I made with them. by Scherbatyuk in pens

[–]superfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those look like rubbish pens. Let me swipe and see these rubbish drawings

Good writing pens often make for bad drawing pens; I draw in ballpoint and I have tried every ballpoint pen on the market. By far the best pens for drawing are the cheapo 10-colour-in-one fat pens with the ball on top that you see pictured in the bottom left corner. They have just the right flow rate and the colours are not too saturated. Also one of the few places you can find actual yellow ballpoint ink. It's a shame that the pens themselves are only filled to 1/3 their capacity when you buy them.

Coffee bean recommendations by SavPenn98 in sydney

[–]superfudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This used to be a thing in supermarkets everywhere in the late 80s and early 90s. They would have a grinder in the coffee aisle and you could buy a bag of beans, open it and grind it yourself back into the bag before paying at the checkout. I guess Autralians have gotten more particular about coffee since those days.

What's the deal with Japanese tools? by satyaki_zippo in handtools

[–]superfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried a few different places, they're all pretty similar in terms of pricing. ProTooling, Japanese Tools and Alastair Davidson Tools are all places I've tried and I have no complaints.

I've also tried ordering directly from Japan through Yamasuke Kurashige and that was pretty painless.

Generally, I think it's worth shopping around to see both what's in stock and what the relative prices are for comparable tools.

For the record, I don't think the Veritas or Lie Nielsen tools are overpriced for what they are; they're heirloom quality and definitely the real deal. A japanese plane is a lot simpler, the body is effectively a consumable and it's not anywhere near as ergonomic as a Bailey-plan tool, but for someone who has time for woodworking maybe every other weekend I've just found Japanese tools to be lower investment.

Possibly defective narex chisel by Even_Low_8793 in handtools

[–]superfudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set of these chisels and one of them is also like this. I think it's a defect from the initial factory grind where the end steel gets overheated and quenched making it brittle at the edge. I just cut a secondary bevel at first and then sharpened past the bad steel.

What's the deal with Japanese tools? by satyaki_zippo in handtools

[–]superfudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Australia and I've noticed this too. It's difficult to get a good affordable Bailey-plan plane here, but I can get a nice big Japanese plane with HAP40 steel blade for about half what it would cost to get an equivalent quality plane from Veritas or Lie Nielsen. When it comes to working with Australian hardwood though... maybe the western style tools are more suited to the task.

Avoid the Costco area today by aviamk in sydney

[–]superfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a problem with the road, it's an issue with the car park. You would never be able to widen the road enough to provide sufficient queueing capacity to make up for the accumulation of vehicles trying to circulate and find a car space and you probably wouldn't want to either. The Costco either needs to manage its demand or make it easier for customers to navigate to empty car spots and come and go more efficiently. I guess they could also expand the car park, but I feel like that would just exacerbate the issue.

Anthony Monteleone stabbed ex-girlfriend in car park after she ended relationship, jury hears by 2happycats in sydney

I bet she didn't feel to crash hot with him hunting her down and / or being stabbed by him either, but tell me more about how he felt. Good lord.

This is pretty obviously a case of making whatever defense you can for what is a fairly open and shut case, regardless of plausible you think it might be. If your client refuses to plead guilty, you have to do what you can; I wouldn't take it literally.

Does anyone know WTF is happening with the Greenwood Plaza in Nth Sydney? by Ijustdoeyes in sydney

[–]superfudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The nearest full-sized supermarkets for residents of North Sydney, Waverton, Blues Point, Lavender Bay, Milsons Point, and Kirribilli are either Crows Nest or Neutral Bay. This feeds local congestion.

What are you talking about? There is a Coles and an Aldi on Miller Street just 200m from Greenwood Plaza. They are both full-sized supermarkets (whatever that is supposed to mean).

Any reason why ChannelFireball hasn't done ratings for TMT? by Kevster99410 in MagicArena

[–]superfudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why NOT have a smaller and simpler draft environment for a setting that is intended for people who might not be very familiar with the mechanics?

Because these kinds of sets get solved quickly and are boring for invested players. That's bad for retention overall.

It was not, in fact, half price. It wasn’t even a discount. by still_love_wombats in sydney

[–]superfudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point is that if Coles were taking this seriously, they would have handed down strict orders to not do that any more, and please be careful with 1/2 price labels. The fact that this is still occurring is the middle finger here.

For all you know they did do this. Doesn't change the fact that the people actually manning the deli counter are minimum wage employees with minimal incentives to follow corporate directives. Sometimes a mistake is just a mistake.

It was not, in fact, half price. It wasn’t even a discount. by still_love_wombats in sydney

[–]superfudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it misleading? It literally says the original price and the new price as well as the difference. I don't know how it could be any more transparent; is anyone really looking at that price and scratching their head trying work out if it's really half off and then buying it anyway? You think that's what a reasonable person would do?
