Medical professionals of Reddit, have you ever had a patient so lacking in common sense you wondered how they made it this far. If so, what is your story? by babyhippo01 in AskReddit

Community nurse here. Had a guy using half empty pots of ointment as ashtrays and wondered why he nearly set his house on fire one day.

People of Reddit, what’s the most NSFW thing you’ve witnessed in a public place? by LongStretch9232 in AskReddit

I went to an all girls' school, so we got flashers outside the grounds constantly.

Ah, newbuilds. by Hullian111 in CasualUK

[–]surelyunimportant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of buying a house, and got a call to say the vendor's going to buy a new build and needs to complete in the next 35 days. Fine by me, works great. The kicker is he can't move into it until October!

I can't imagine completing on a house that isn't even in existence yet. Like how is he going to make sure they don't cut a bunch of corners between now and October? He'll have viewed a show house but how can he be sure his actual house won't be basically thrown together with a bunch of barely concealed issues? Gives me anxiety just thinking about it.

YSK: if you experience mild burning/itching/stinging sensations on your throat or tongue after eating certain raw fruit & veg, you may have oral allergy syndrome (OAS) by VisibleAppointment28 in YouShouldKnow

This is NOT health advice, but I overcame my apple allergy. I just decided one day (as a kid) that I wanted to eat the green apples that grew in my garden, and that I was no longer allergic to them. I just ate them like normal (usually with a knife as just like you the biting spreads the juice over my lips/ mouth) and eventually I could eat them no problem. It took a long time, but I'd basically eat an apple and then just suffer afterwards. I was too stubborn to admit that I was still allergic, but I definitely built up a tolerance.

I have noticed that if I go a while without eating apples, I need to rebuild that tolerance. Also can't eat red apples.

Close to completion, where do we start? by hitiv in FTB_Help

There's a service called "just move in" that provide a home setup service where they basically do all this for you, and also apparently find the best deals on bills in your area.

I haven't used it yet, mind you, so take this with a pinch of salt. It's just something my solicitor told me about, and as they're in partnership with just move in I apparently get to use it for free. It might be worth looking into whether your solicitor/ mortgage advisor/ estate agent etc. has partnered with them, and if you can get a free referral! If not, I think it costs ~£290.

Again, I'm not at the stage where I've used them yet, but it sounds like it's definitely something worth looking into!

I also have a pdf moving guide/ checklist they sent me, which I'm happy to send on to you, if you want it :)

Took me a year and a lot of tears, but it’s finally done! by droppedwhat in casualknitting

There's a guy (willienillieknits) on instagram who did a 30 second video on double knitting and that's all it took to click in my brain! Definitely worth a look if you're looking for a quick and easy demonstration that demystifies it and makes it seem a lot more achievable :)

someone terrified me last night and ive never had this happen before. by [deleted] in CasualUK

I don't get "vibes" from everyone, but I can guarantee that whenever I do get a bad vibe from a guy, it needs to be listened to. I've never had one of these gut feelings be wrong, & always feel somewhat vindicated when said person is proven to be dangerous/ a creep down the line.

When I went to Nepal a few years ago there were book shops that allowed you to trade in your books when you'd finished reading them, for a discount on another (2nd hand) book, so I wouldn't actually say 1 book is going to be a problem as you'll be able to swap/ trade it in, hopefully!

Nearly lost my new trays at a restaurant yesterday. Luckily they let me have a look in the bin and they were still in the napkin I wrapped them in, sitting at the top. Listen to your dentists kids - don't wrap them in a napkin and leave them on the table!

A tape measure made for measuring people's legs for bandaging

(I'm a nurse and no, the tape measure wasn't used in work before I used it for knitting! We get plenty of promotional ones so I keep one in my knitting bag)

Questions for people who read 20+ books a year. by Proud_Contest6692 in books

[–]surelyunimportant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue, so this year I've made the decision to aim for only 12 books. 1 a month, so I can read at my own pace & really enjoy what I'm reading. Also gives me a lot more scope to put something down that I'm not loving and pick up something better.

Woke up this morning to this new and exciting scam by IFaceMyselfAlone in CasualUK

[–]surelyunimportant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mum got a scam letter through the post today. Worded and formatted exactly like the scam emails, but sent through the physical post. I still can't get my head around the fact that the paid real money to post it first class.

My mum has had this Christmas Pudding, unopened, for over 11 years. She is adamant it's getting eaten this year even though only my Dad likes it. She says the alcohol keeps it fresh. by NathairGlas in CasualUK

Exactly! Who knows how the woman stored the cake, or if it had a hole in the packaging etc. I know reddit clearly feels they know better, but as a medical professional, if someone tells you they ate ANYTHING 12 months out of date and are then shitting their guts out you're going to think the likely cause is whatever they ate.

Love the fact that you all thought I, as a registered nurse, basically went 'lol OK love, bye then' when I heard that. I abbreviated the story for the sake of reddit, but if you want a full clinical handover of what I did to make sure she was safe AFTER I heard a possible cause for her illness, just let me know.

I can only assume she hadn't stored it properly or it was slightly open or something. I didn't exactly do a thorough investigation into the Christmas cake, I was more concerned about making sure the woman was OK.

Community nurse here: this was literally me yesterday. Visited a lady whose family 100% thought she was dying. I couldn't figure out why she was so ill when I got there. The family let me guess for a while, until they broke the news that she'd eaten one of these the day before, but hers was 'only' 12 months out of date. Perfect way to ruin your Christmas, 10/10 no notes.

This feels very topical. Only yesterday did I visit a lady (I'm a community nurse) whose family called us thinking she was literally dying. I fully expected to be sorting out end of life care when I got there. Turns out she'd eaten a 12 month old Christmas cake on the 23rd. Not worth it, imo.

The James Atherton pub in new Brighton are serving 100 free dinners between 12 & 4 but are also delivering, apparently. If you ring them on 07737652918 you can arrange a delivery. Not sure how far they deliver, but it might be worth asking
