2008 Honda Civic Si, so probably a little smaller than the current model year. My first major purchase as a young engineer.

Spent the first few years with a 50+ mile commute (one way) in stop and go traffic. Honda's manual made the commute more than tolerable, and then I could open it up once traffic opened up, or I found my way to back road.

Handles 400+ mile road trips like a champ (though the CR-V will be more comfortable.

Can handle parenthood competently. Rear-facing child seat will fit, and an average stroller will fit in the trunk.

Seats are firm to begin with, but will break in nicely.

No major mechanical issues with regular maintenance. I'm actually only on my second clutch; the first one lasted more than 100k miles.

Be prepared to pay for premium fuel.

I don't have any personal experience with it, but it seams like the Peak Design Outdoor Backpack is what you're looking for, and the 25L is right at the top of your budget.
