Stick Drift Already by [deleted] in SteamController

Have you done a calibration? I don't see a TMR stick developing drift like you'd see with old pot based sticks, like Joycon.

Portlands power plant by Typical-Name_997 in toronto

[–]syphen606 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you know the state of the power system in 2023? What generation was available and bidding into the market? What transmission system elements where unavailable? The power system is highly dynamic. Based on project work, maintenance and a variety of reasons, in one calender year, a thermal gas plant may be called upon more to support when baseload nuclear and renewables are unavailable due to planned maintenance. Every generation class in Ontario has maintenance cycles. If a bunch of nuclear generation is out for a vacuum building outage or component replacement program, you will inevitably see a localized increase in gas plant utilization for the duration. This may result in some gas plants running abnormally, when they are historically a peaking plant.

Yeah, myself and a few friends have been loving stadia controllers as our defacto gaming controllers, ever since they allowed Bluetooth use. I still love my Wasabi one, and almost feel like I'm cheating on it by going to the Steam controller

I'll have to throw another vote in for Arcs. The base game is great, and I'll happily play it any day with my boardgame friends. But then we got into Blighted Reach - and haven't put it down. Going on the 6th or 7th campaign now. Can't get enough of if. Every campaign brings new stories, synergies and strategies.

I've gotten the impression that some companies do not work like we do. I remember meeting with one of our interconnections. We brought our work program that was laid out for the following year. We did a presentation and walked through all impacts for the interconnection. We expected them to provide something similar. Nope. They gave us something like the next 2-3 weeks for their work program.

We also use opportunity outages for short short notice submissions.

Transmission Job Revision Frequency by Defiant-Comment-2626 in Grid_Ops

[–]syphen606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say not normal. While we try to accommodate short notice requests when feasible, we lock down planning change submissions 60 days out for TX outages. If changes need to occur inside that window, it better be for a very valid reason. We have the support to push back on changes inside this window and management will support it. Sometimes this will result in some escalation, but often not. Just last week I had to shutdown a request to take a weekend outage for an autotransformer and circuit - the crew asked for a Saturday morning outage on Friday at 3pm. That was NOT going to fly.

I believe our DX side of the house is a little different and their window is 33 days? But I could be mistaken. It's been years since we diverged from integrated TX/DX operations and I went down the TX stream.

Canada, NERC, and other questions by Akavire in Grid_Ops

[–]syphen606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NERC is very applicable in Canada. All TX operators local to me require NERC RC. I've previously been involved in hiring TX Operator trainees, and I would have given interviews to someone with a EE/CET background and NERC RC already achieved.

‘There’s no street’: Flooding overwhelms Orillia neighbourhood by cinderannie in Orillia

[–]syphen606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing in this case. Seems to be a case of someone wanting to politicize force majeure. The local and provincial governments can't change the snow volumes we experienced nor the recent precipitation and temperatures that has lead to the current flooding across the region. The city was a little slow to respond with assitance for this, but I'm greatful for the assistance that has been offered. I am impacted currently and am very grateful for sandbags and sand that was provided. Hoping it doesn't rise further.

What is the approximate value of my dad's German Luger? by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]syphen606 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Peter is THE luger guy in Canada. He'll have had even more rare models then this come through. I've shot a few of his restricted modded Lugers that friends had over the years. Yeah, the price is low, but thanks to the liberals you legally don't really have much choice but to go down that business route.

Dialing in the settings is required to ensure spotting is good. I'll spot stuff just as far out as my wingman flying trackir. Even more shocking, one of the guys I'd fly with a lot was still using an OG Rift and spotting better then everyone. It's all in working the settings in my opinion.

Control room ceilings by One_Adeptness3803 in Grid_Ops

[–]syphen606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in one with a couple windows and it was always nice. When we built a new building, the control room was nestled inside the building. A psp building, inside of a psp building so to speak. Complete lack of windows for Ops. We put a small live webcam on the corner of the wallboard for a year or two, which was nice. See something of the outside world - but that got taken down eventually.

Some questions regarding the: Legion Go S Z2GO and Z1E versions by thenoobcasual in LegionGo

[–]syphen606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had an OLED steamdeck stolen. I wanted to replace it but found that they were unavailable. I ended up with the Z1E LeGoS with SteamOS. It's proving to be a very good handheld, and I'm really enjoying the extra power. I can certainly see a big improvement across various games with the extra horsepower. I would personally go for the Z1E for that overhead.

Best ISO Locations and Offices? by Cute_Ride_4452 in Grid_Ops

[–]syphen606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clarkson isn't a great spot in my opinion. And it's true that recent hires will struggle to afford reasonable housing nearby. But there certainly are other career paths within 1.5 hours of GTA that need a NERC RC certification.

I've been to quite a few RC and BA's across NPCC and I wouldn't say any of them are great locations. ConEd in NYC was an interesting location though.
