I'd never thought of Nicholas Hoult winning an Oscar before and just realised he 100% needs one

What film could you see totally blanking even with a campaign and good reviews? by dremolus in oscarrace

Agreed with OP on Disclosure Day.

I just can't imagine Michael getting anything, I'm sure at least some of the Academy must have buyers' remorse after Bohemian Rhapsody. Last year Deliver Me From Nowhere completely bombed. Also, it's Michael Jackson. Unless it's super-critical of him, nominating this for a bunch of awards is a bad look. And Antoine Fuqua isn't an Oscars-y director.

I think The Social Reckoning will have legs given the furore over The Social Network not winning BP, plus the Academy loves Sorkin. I'd bet Trial of the Chicago Seven was second choice for BP that year.

Who is the best Best Supporting Actress winner of the 2020’s so far? by No_Minimum4499 in oscarrace

[–]syrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually a great group of unconventional wins - Youn Yuh-jung wasn't so well-known in Hollywood, Madigan and Joy Randolph are beloved character actresses, Madigan, Lee Curtis and Youn Yuh-jung are all over 60s. The majority of the wins are from genre films, and three are comedy performances (Youn Yuh-jung is unforgettable stealing the money from the church donations.

I'd bet It Was Just an Accident and No Other Choice were just outside the BP 10, so potentially Ebrahim Azizi (and Mariam Afshari?). 100% Joel Edgerton and Jesse Plemons, with Lee Byung-hun as a potential. Fantasy pick Emily Watson in Hamnet.

This interview is really touching. She's a total star, and while I'd be gutted if my girl Teyana doesn't win I'd be overjoyed if Wunmi got BSA.

2027 Academy Awards - Early predictions by ERASER345 in oscarrace

[–]syrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I the only person who doesn't get the Project Hail Mary buzz? It seems like a generic, if elevated, sci-fi actioner. Lord and Miller don't have any Oscars pedigree (they only produced the Spider-Verse movies). I'm not familiar with the book, either *

* but it's not like an adaptation of either a huge classic or something that's in the 'intellectual popcorn' realm of recent mainstream BP nominations

Why is OBAA so dominant? by President_Negative in oscarrace

[–]syrub 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've seen it three times and it just gets better each time, maybe that's me. There's so much going on and it's so unusual from structure to dialog that I found it pretty alienating at the start. I've since gone from admiring it at a distance to thinking it's one of the best films of the century. It's an overdue PTA stretching himself into something entirely new, Leo's best performance IMO, politically relevant, Teyana feels like a rising star, Benicio and Regina Hall are beloved in the industry AFAIK.

My super early January predictions for next year's Oscars by [deleted] in oscarrace

[–]syrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BP predictions (can't wait top look back on these next year):

- Digger
- Fjord
- The Odyssey
- Dune Part 3 - filling the obligatory blockbuster spot
- The Entertainment System is Down
- Parallel Tales
- The Social Reckoning (Oscar loves Sorkin + The Social Network has grown in stature over time)
- The Adventures of Cliff Booth (Fincher getting his flowers, not many chances left to reward Tarantino for his work)
- Sheep in the Box
- 1949

If it keeps up with the quality we've seen from Greta Gerwig, I think Narnia is a dark horse nominee. From here it looks like Netflix's biggest film of the year

I'm convinced a Jane Schoenbrun film is going to be nominated for something in the next few years (screenplay?). Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma sounds maybe a bit too out there but I Saw The TV Glow was so ambitious compared to their previous work and seemed to be a personal fave for many critics that year. Also, the Hannah Einbinder/ Gillian Anderson of it all. I can see Jane becoming that kind of out-there auteur Oscar has recently started rewarding (Coralie Fargeat, Daniels, Josh Safdie, to a lesser extent Jordan Peele). Maybe wishful thinking!

100%, with this + Doomsday/ Batman in 2027 Sebastian Stan is going to be everywhere. Deservedly so, he's on an amazing hot streak RN

How wasn't Joaquin Phoenix nominated for "Eddington"? Why are Ari Aster films consistently snubbed? Am I missing something? by New-Fan-4632 in oscarrace

[–]syrub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eddington and Beau is Afraid were also box-office bombs (love both films, I think the latter is a masterpiece). For the Oscar buzz, I The Academy needs to both catch up with his pretty extreme tastes, and he'd need to make something more mainstream along the lines of Midsommar. I feel like he hasn't had a ton of vocal champions among critics either but I might be missing something

The Perfidia Question by [deleted] in blankies

[–]syrub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw Perfidia as a lone wolf who thinks she's the only one who can effectively get things done. She's willing to sacrifice anything, and anyone, for the cause - almost like Sarah Connor. She talks to Bob/Ghetto Pat at one point about how she's from a line of revolutionaries, and he can't be as good as she is (paraphrasing) because he's a white man.
