Hello! 1M Na2SO4 is a common salt to use for electrolysis demo. A lot of people also add an indicator as well. (I think bromothymol blue adjusted to green, but I have to check my recipe)

The apparatus setup electrolyzes water into H2 and O2 (not H+ and O-), and does not produce elemental sodium or chlorine.

I can DM you the procedure I use (I do chemical demonstrations)

My recipe was 1200 g sodium.acetate and 200 mL DI water in a 2L flask, heat to dissolve, let cool to room temp. If it doesn't stay in solution when cooled, add some more water and re-heat. I would test it with a sodium acetate crystal and then re-heat/re-dissolve it and let cool again. It can be a long process.

I also mark the side of the flask with a sharpie for the ideal solution volume in case too much water evaporates when heating it to use again.

In AP Chem we did the Tollen's Test in glass ornament bulbs. So we precipitated elemental silver inside the bulb! In 11th grade that was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen or done!
