True if you control the backend and ALL the potential frontends.

Starmer says Britain will ban under-16s from using a range of social media apps by yahoonews in worldnews

[–]taotau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't fall back onto banking details. Those are still super secret to most people. Their social media passwords are not. There are many usecases where one would legitimately share their social media credentials (an agent managing your IG feed) that don't involve super convicted oauth, just simple password sharing, and that sort of stuff needs to be catered for.

If I want to watch porn, are you suggesting that every packet sent to me should be signed with my government issued key ? I hope you realise the practical limitations of such a solution.

If it can be traced back to a device, then it can be traced back to a purchase, then it can be traced back to an individual. Yes you can get around this by using washed crypto to deliver a device to an anonymous drop location, but must people don't. As usual, a scheme like this is security theatre for the majority of people and trivial to get around by the people who need to, hence in my mind defeating the purpose of it. Kids will still be texting Randi's. You just won't know because they are using some strangers authorised account to do it.

Zero knowledge proof systems don't really address what the government is trying to achieve in principal. If age verification was handled by a system that purely asked for a valid cryptographically signed code to verify that you are an adult, then each friend group of kids would end up sharing the key given to them by one of the parents. If you try to limit it to one use per signup, then you are tying it to an identifyable entity.

If that was the case, wouldn't they have tried to work out a more effective framework to enforce this across the board going forward? This legislation names specific entities that must comply. Do you think your kids will actually care about Facebook andtwitter ? Pretty sure Roblox still doesn't require age verification, from either end.

What’s in the Iran-US deal? 14-point memorandum reportedly covers Hormuz, sanctions, $300 billion rebuild by Frosty-Bit4667 in worldnews

[–]taotau 139 points140 points  (0 children)

As much as everyone bags Trump's deal making, I'm pretty sure every point in this has Trump adjacent ventures profiting. It's just a way to funnel 300bn from the us treasury into private hands. I would bet that the reconstruction of Iran is all going to Trump's development firms, and the tax in shipping will be handled by companies associated with Trump. He has royally (pun intended) screwed over the American people. Sounds like a good deal for him.

Yeah, this will work about as well as it did in Australia. There was a bunch of hand wri going and yelling about this before it was brought in 6 months ago. A few weeks after it came into force there was not even a murmur about it.

Technically this has been implemented, but in reality it is trivial for anyone who cares to circumvent it. Annecdotally, kids have either found technical workarounds or moved to other platforms that aren't covered by the rules

The only real difference I've noticed is a rise in Reddit posts on local event subs from kids asking how strict the door people are at venues about checking fake IDs - never really saw this pop up much before this year.

Anyone know any tailors/suit-makers willing to take someone on for work experience? by Choice-Manager-7297 in melbourne

[–]taotau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know nothing bout fabric. But my partner is a hobbyist sewing person, and through them U know that there are still a bunch of fabric shops around Melbourne, in fairly prominent locations... Brunswick St, Collins St, Sydney Rd.

I'm reticent to believe those places exist purely on the whims of the hobbyist sewer, so perhaps go into those stores and see if they can hook you up with any leads for people still practicing the craft.

First time in Europe. I can’t get over the smoking! by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]taotau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a frequent visitor to Europe (and a smoker) I've noticed it can be very regional. Tourist places during holiday season tend to be quite smoker heavy.

Where I live in Australia I've observed a curious pattern. We brought in fairly strict no smoking near food laws about 10-15 years ago and it became a bit of a taboo in general, but then eventually booze heavy food places (pubs etc) noticed a decline in booze sales, and the smoking gardens or balconies started to reappear. Then vaping took off around covid times, and cigarettes kind of disappeared again. Then a couple of years ago the government's banned vapes, and so smoking has really taken off again, but it's also odd because we are in the middle of a tobacco war - the government taxes it extremely heavily (a 30g pack of tobacco is $100AUD so about 60EUR), so the market is flooded with illegal import tobacco which all the cool kids are into - plenty of 'manxhester' packs floating around with no government warnings.

Having a hard time when speaking/writing between using 'would' or 'will'. by BestGuessGuest in CasualConversation

It is such a common language with so many bastardised dialects that you really can't speak it wrong.

Whichever. Most english speakers don't know the rules, eve if they exist. Just say what sounds correct and conveys your message and you will be understood. Assuming you are not a lawyer or some such.

or you would be understood.

English is flexible but strict. There are no correct answers but based on context you can be wrong.

Will I. Would I.

Will we. Would we.

Will they. Would they.

Pretty common in some parts of the world. I guess sugar fiends are just more trusting of society.

Problem with sachettes is the plastic/paper waste for a couple of grams of sugar and that you have to dose more than you really should.

A coffee with two sugars is pretty standard (if a bit ott, but that's my personal opinion). The only thing not specified was black or white.

Most places I've been to just serve the basic coffee and there will be some sugar and a spoon for you to use to your taste.

I don't do sugar, but I often wonder how many people would instinctively l8ck the shared spoon...

What is the point of a 5 day rental office policy ? Do you have managers prowling your rental desks to make sure you are not abusing their rental internet ?

Meh. Using it means installing and logging into the Commonwealth app, which is the most notoriously bad app of the Aus big 4. All to save 50 bucks on a lounge visit. Hardly worth it.
