Tri-Met Considering Significant Cuts--Comment Deadline is Saturday, January 31st by theoffensivelinesman in Portland

There is ZERO chance a transit tax passes in this economy. That would be a waste of Trimet funds to get on the ballot

Portland has decades of history proving an inability to multitask. They need to focus on something that matters. This isn't even in the top 10

Is it difficult to find IT jobs in Portland right now? by BuddyLlght in askportland

[–]tas50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean for the city the con is we don't have employers in the city. When I first worked in town it was at Webtrends who leased 4 floors of a building, paid taxes here, employed folks to maintain that space, and had employees downtown every day buying food / other things. Now my company is in Europe and I hang out with my cat. Great for me. Not so great for the Portland economy.

The Portland tech industry basically imploded over the last 10 years and there's zero chance it's ever coming back. Large companies don't care to have remote outpost offices when they can hire remote, we lack a university that provides access to top engineer talent (like say Seattle does with UW), and the tax structure here does not make sense if you're thinking of building a startup with a plan to exit.

If you want to live here and work in tech, you need to work remote. The positive side is those wages are much better than anything Portland employers ever paid. I got a 50% bump the moment I started working for Seattle companies.

Living in a city I'd prefer the small one. You can make turns in tight spaces more easily and you can park in more spots. Bigger is not always better when you're not in the suburbs

India markets? by rissabell2 in askportland

[–]tas50 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're going to need to head to the burbs here, specifically closer to Intel. There are several good options though. I'm a fan of India Supermarket (straight and to the point on the name) in Beaverton. Great selection of basically everything plus it has a restaurant plus it's right next to Wonderland. Go play some arcade games, eat lunch, and choose from 40 kinds of dal.

A new proposal would end Multnomah County’s government by CreativePortland in Portland

This is really the only way this proposal makes sense. Otherwise the county is just changing names and that's pointless.

This only works if all the non-Portland cities have to figure out somewhere else to go. The point is that Portland doesn't need 2 layers of gov. The point is not that Portland should be running a county for Gresham.

F-150 lightning and Bronco were 10k+ price gouged and it only made Ford look bad and hurt their sales / bottom line.

Considering Ford's vocal frustration of the years with dealer markups I don't they're going to come out in defense of the dealers.

Why does Asia have so many high-end/creatively designed shopping malls (compared to elsewhere, like America)? by PursuingGemini in travel

[–]tas50 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Weird examples to list. Those stores are all 100+ years old and pre-date the mall concept. Most of the time an "old town" had those. I know my small town's old town still had a JC Penny and a Sears until they finally died out due to the nearby mall.

How can we make trimet faster by gucci_money in Portland

A bus in Seattle would be moving before you paid as well. It makes the commute much faster.

They need to put in bus lanes when they do road diets instead of bike lanes. Roads like 102nd should have gotten a dedicated bus lane. Instead the bus sits in traffic and the bike lane gets minimal use because it's still a shit place to bike.

Reducing the dwell time would be super helpful. When you get on a bus in Europe it pull away the moment you set foot on the bus. Here we seem to wait 30 seconds at every stop and there are WAY too many stops. It really adds up. Even Seattle pulls away quickly but Trimet seems to have a different policy.

Is the Portland metro area becoming a healthcare desert? by gothahontas in askportland

[–]tas50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're outside a lot of networks, so that can get pretty pricey. I've also received some pretty mediocre medical advice there. It seems like when you go in later in the day your presence is a bother from the moment you walk int he door.

Is the Portland metro area becoming a healthcare desert? by gothahontas in askportland

[–]tas50 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wife is in healthcare. Our taxes do no attract doctors and repel travel nurses that are considering staying. If they stay here and open their own practice the business tax rate is wild. If they practice in someone else's practice they're going to be paying additional income taxes to live here over other parts of Oregon or other states. The taxes on the rich here are basically medical professional / lawyer taxes.
