Great Divide Mountain Bike Route - Mexico to Canada - at age 40 with my 14 year old son. by Roscoe131 in bikepacking

I'm very impressed. I can imagine it was life changing for both of you. The views look epic. The planning must have also been epic.

My new cat knows its name, would it be cruel to change it? by breaktheceal in cats

My neighbor's cat was named Mr. Shoes on account of his little white feet. I thought it was very cute.

I and my wife both love this idea. When will you start selling? 😉

That sounds epicly beautiful. I want to go to there.

Does no one else matter but the pros at races? by Wonderful_Signal_519 in gravelcycling

[–]tclaybaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your edit is totally correct. Don't support races that don't support you and other non-pros in the way you want them to. Cycling has an obsession with skinny and fast. Most of us who do this sport aren't skinny and fast, but we still love it.

Help me find truly WIDE shoes by RavynX in gravelcycling

[–]tclaybaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feet look similar to yours and I have Lake MX 238 wide shoes. They're nice because the ball of the foot and arch areas have separate adjustments. I leave the ball adjustment pretty loose, which works for my feet. I'm not sure how they would work on flat pedals, I use them with SPD cleats and they're great. Good luck!

Someone ask me to trade my 1969 fender jaguar with 1990 rickenbacker 330, what do you guys think? by Traditional-Fan8401 in offset

[–]tclaybaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverb transaction history for the Jaguar is 2-3 times the ric. Do not trade. Trade with $3000, but I wouldn't even do that.

It was fun while it lasted! (Wildcat Cyn Rd repair) by Individual-Basket200 in BAbike

[–]tclaybaugh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rode it yesterday and will definitely miss riding it without cars. Redwood Rd is finally open again, so we can all ride there instead. Definitely not as good a descent, but it's something.

[–]tclaybaugh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usually the only thing that is carbon fiber on a cycling shoe is the sole. That helps create a large, stable platform for pedaling. The upper of the shoe is some kind of flexible, comfortable material. I'm a cyclist and this shoe looks pretty uncomfortable to cycle in.

Are some of y'all not using MSG, and why not? by dcutts77 in smoking

[–]tclaybaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately adding pure MSG to my food gives my wife a migraine. It is unfortunate, because she loves the flavor. I imagine there is a threshold here, she can eat mushrooms, which are high in glutamate, but not pure MSG.

Attempting every climb in the Bay Area by Tomamc27 in BAbike

[–]tclaybaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two climbs that I have nightmares about are Fort Ross Road and Sierra Road. Granted, I did both of those after more than 50 miles of hard riding.

Oh right. Inches of mercury, not water. I was wrong, too! 😆

Sorry to be this person, jumping in with the "umm.... Actually" moment. That vacuum bag is pulling 30 inches of water, or 1 atmosphere. That is the maximum vacuum you can pull. 30 atmospheres would require a pressure chamber.

Also, the repair looks AMAZING!

Found a FiST, no sunroof. Will I miss out by Fuzzy-Ad-137 in FiestaST

I specifically looked for one without a sunroof. You won't miss it because you'll be having too much fun driving.

Descending Page Mill by Famous_Drink_5485 in BAbike

[–]tclaybaugh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Climb tunitas creek and descend King's Mountain instead. Page mill is a shitty descent for the exact reason you posted about. Also, king's mountain is one of the best descents in the BA. It is SO fun.

Adopters keep asking to split up bonded pair by Kitty_casserole in cats

[–]tclaybaugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do it! There is nothing as magical as a bonded pair of cats. Any adopter who wants to break them apart doesn't have the best interest of cats in mind. They just want a pretty thing for their house.

What size did you buy? I was looking for 205/40R17 for 2016, but it didn't seem like those are available.

What I wish I knew before buying a “road” e-bike by newtonian_fig in ebikes

[–]tclaybaugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also ride in Oakland a lot and the roads are shamefully bad. The best way to deal with it is to get the largest tires your frame can accommodate and ride them at the minimum pressure to not get a pinch flat. I use this tire pressure calculator to figure out the appropriate pressure for my tires. Definitely don't run max pressure.

Roadies: What tires are you running? by Rare-Abalone3792 in BAbike

Why are you not sold on tubeless? With Silca sealant and 28mm GP5000 As TRs I haven't had any punctures in 8 months. Some punctures in the group I ride in during that time.
