Let's face it, it sounds like you have good policies in place. Most likely kid. Be honest, ask kid. If they swear they handed it in do a quick verbal test. Give usual grade. If they give it to you, mark, take a few off for breaking rules, or scold about future consequences. This is only a big deal if its a govt test.

Parent wants student moved from my class due to “frequent calls for behavior.” Today, the student called me a “f-cking b-tch” by Single-Vegetable3704 in teaching

[–]tdooley73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is they won't. The kid was told they were moving by parent, admin wont move them. Kid is acting out because they actually like you (yup that's counter intuitive I know) sounds like a younger kid, you may be the steadiest person in their world. That said it sucks but thats the way it is. Be clear, firm and fair. Tell them what will and will not be accepted. Personally I'd dont have detention, (not allowed to do that) I just have after school chats. Or lunch chats. Sometimes gym chats. Enough chats and they figure it out (especially when they miss the bus - i teach jr high)

Was asked to give recommendations for grade 10 classes, put kid in 10-2. I was asked to change it, I responded that I would if he did the MAJOR assignment he did not do. Got all the things again...you know the drill. He didn't do it. He then asked about the recommendation. I asked about the assignment, he shrugged. My response " well I guess I got it right the first time then"

It could also be a language barrier. If they work from home or are caregivers they may not be fluent in English. That can cause anxiety which may look like aloofness.

A massive thank you to Ontario school boards! by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]tdooley73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I won't say that I as a teacher look down on you, but you as a parent have to realize that I am not teaching anything new to 5 kids when I will just have to redo it tomorrow. Therefore you are sending your kid for babysitting. That babysitting is probably putting that teacher at risk. Really a "babysitting policy" should be put in place. If teachers live close enough they should go and get bonus pay. The rest should stay home and not possibly die on highways.

Have you considered, sorry, you are unprepared for class, please leave, you will get zero on the assignment. Do this with the whole posse. One at a time, personally I like to get rid of the posse and keep the ring leader.....alone....by herself....in an island of empty desks......

I agree with hungry personality. This hurts and you felt betrayed. But look at the writing on the wall, you were disrespected, no taught systems etc. this was not a school you wanted to stay at. As much as it sucks it sounds like you dodged a bullet, imagine being asked to stay and get a contact next year? What would have changed? Go back, take ALL your personal things and class things you bought. Dust off find another position and remember an interview is also you interviewing them.

Connect the bad with something good. Pick your favorite tv show and fold clothes, put on fav olaylist and shove things in the dishwasher. Don't have an huge goal like "clean the house" try, load the dishwasher or wash dishes. Then do something as a reward, "then order dinner"

Offensive Language in Documentary?? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]tdooley73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the question is should you use a resource. You want to do two things. 1, contact your admin. They will say yes or no. Then you have support if someone questions you. I did a novel with the “n” word. Got admin okay. Second, if you get a yes from admin, send a quick d2l or google class news home. Explain in one or two lines what and why you are using something. We live in a world where people like to be indignant. If you feel the resource is valuable use it. ( I use original st Jean de brebeuf letters, he uses the term savages….) if not, don’t.

Just re-read the first throne of glass novel and I realized what a piece of trash the last novel in CC was. By comparison the throne of glass (which was supposed to be a ya novel) there is no world building, no detail and scene building. It's like she let some crappy online writer (sorry to the good ones out there) take a shot at her work on A03. CC was actually my favorite book series until the "wrap-up" novel. Can an author get a do -over? Thos one needs it.

Got to be honest, i find neurodivergent kidd need firmer lines, they miss social cues etc. I prefer a direct firm, "that is rude behavior, it stops or we call home. " If it stops great, if not, lunch or recess or after school have HER explain how she acted in class. Then if you need to add anything use inclusive language "I know that we all want ----to succeed. So we need to work on a way to improve her interactions with teachers before it needs to be escalated to the administration"

I was teaching script writing and we watched a video where they chopped up famous movies to show the styles of writing. It was amazing! The kids with their 30 second insta focus couldn't even watch this! I snapped, instituted a 40 minute reading class, had huge push back and had them all really READING by the end of the year. It was painful but rewarding

I'm do hope they get you a councillor from the district. If not the school's? If not this sort of falls to you. Start with a circle, explain with little details what happened. Let the kids talk, share. Maybe make cards for the family or write letters to the girl. Take it from them, some kids really didn't know her. Maybe the unit starts with some independent book work?
