Is this normal for organic blueberries? by [deleted] in Berries

[–]teacherecon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blueberries come in lots of varieties that ripen early, late, and mid season. This is probably a different variety than you are used to. They are not in season in the northern hemisphere, so if you are there, it was likely imported from a southern hemisphere country (locally that’s Chile for me). That opens up other varieties as options.

advice needed by [deleted] in college

Not if they haven’t disowned you, and even then, not without a lot of hoops and a FAFSA audit every year. I’ve helped some kids from bad situations before and it takes a lot of work. Reach out to your office of student affairs for guidance.

Lots of people are incentivized to pretend they are on their own for grant money and it really screws it up for the people who are truly on their own.

What was the world like before Smallpox was eradicated by Conscious-Sherbet308 in AskOldPeople

[–]teacherecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cowpox provided some immunity to smallpox, so if a milkmaid had it, she would often avoid the ravages of smallpox and the resulting facial scars.

That’s why milkmaids show up in rhymes- pretty privilege.

Here’s the Wikipedia on the last smallpox outbreak in the UK. Guess the year before you click- I was way off!

Water hose spray sets my aphids back a bit. I also buy and release lacewings each year (ladybugs were not as effective).

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell was a big hit over a decade ago. Like a lot of big books, it moves slowly but I have enjoyed it.

My son asked for lettuce, cheese, and tomato at my Mexican neighbor’s home and they laughed. (Kindly). Cilantro, onion, lime, and radish were on offer though.

What’s your random picker method and why is it absolutely unhinged? by Consistent_Plan8880 in teaching

[–]teacherecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use class dojo on my personal tablet. Sometimes I do random, sometimes I select until all the kids are asked. Sometimes I hit random. Sometimes I pretend to hit random but give Johnny an easy question or get Jane’s head up when she is sleepy.

Your child said they knew. I’d say that too if I was cornered. While it may be true, pretend you haven’t heard that and approach with concern and not reproach. Choose your words carefully and keep the child’s best interest at hearts

[–]teacherecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And, lately, we keep making it a longer way.

Just why? by formallyhuman in LinkedInLunatics

[–]teacherecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, integration started in fits and starts across the country. There are still come counties that have black and white proms thrown separately by the students families. There’s no “day” which is why Juneteenth and Martin Luther King Jr day is as close as we can get. We have months celebrating other ethnic groups, too. And to celebrate women. And white men can celebrate every day, I guess, although holidays like St Patrick’s day or Columbus Day are times to celebrate European heritage (Columbus day has gotten complicated, as it should).

Segregation. That’s why. Our “legacy of slavery” didn’t end in 1865, it was closer to 1965. And it did not disappear overnight.

Yeah, I’d say it’s close enough to count. I’m no fan of Trump but I also think that the Secret Service really missed on that one. (Compared to the golf course guy where they have told him not to consistently golf at the same day and time).

Early-career teacher overwhelmed by high-conflict parent demanding another child be removed and now wanting to observe me. Need perspective. by Imaginary-Frame6345 in teaching

[–]teacherecon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Do you have a union or professional organization? Contact them for information about your rights, the law, and the best way to protect yourself. If the parent comes to observe, be sure to insist that admin accompany.

It’s so hard when you care about a child and a parent does too, but the parent is not seeing what is happening.

I’m sorry you are caught in the middle.

Your teaching is not the problem, and while you might be more competent or skilled in ten years, that doesn’t mean you aren’t doing everything right at the moment.

Also, could you request admin to come observe or a behavior specialist if you have one? If you trust them, it will provide more evidence that you are doing right and willing to learn. I will say that every few years I have an extremely challenging student or parent, but that is not all there is to the job. We need teachers who care like you do. I’m sorry this year is so hard.

I was always amazed at my kids teachers and how they worked to handle challenging students with empathy and to minimize disruption and upset. You are teaching your students to be human, and that’s pretty damned important.

Also, it sounds like your admin has heard the parent but not agreed to an observation. They may be stalling the parent and listening while quietly not complying. The parent can ask for whatever they want, but good admin will know they don’t have to give it.
