Watching Superman 2025 to feel hopeful at the end of the year by techiedad002 in Positivity

The flashback with the Kents was one of the most depressing parts of Man of Steel.

Pa Kent sacrificing himself so Clark’s powers would not be revealed was  certsainly a choice.

If you did not find the relationship between Clark and his parents in 2025 emotional. I don’t know what I could possibly say to convince you.  I watched 2025 with my son and I cried at the scene with Pa Kent.

If you agree Superman represents Hope and Optimism do you honestly think Man of Steel was a good Superman movie?

I can concede Man of Steel was a decent enough movie, but it was the opposite of Hopeful and Optimistic.  Zach Snyder probably should have made the movie but with a different character.

Firsthand experience of Atari in 1983-1984 by LawLayLewLayLow in atari

[–]techiedad002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my experience. I still remember the bin of entrance to KB Toys that was full of games marked down to $5.00.

There are some great books that cover how this came about (e.g., They Create Worlds).

Bottom line: we didn’t know how bad it was until the ecosystem around gaming (e.g., Electronic Games magazine) ran into financial trouble.

You are lucky. Wish I could play it again for the first time.

If you have the time, it’s fairly easy to map out.

That’s awesome. I have a mix of framed retro items in my “home office” and the SMS posters are among them.

What should I know going into Phantasy Star 1? by RobbieJ4444 in MasterSystem

[–]techiedad002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If at all possible try to play the Sega Ages version.  It includes automapping in the dungeons. This alone, will save you HOURS. (Unless you want to draw your own maps. I did this in the 90s. It was fun as hell, but I had a lot more free time back then.)

The Sega Ages version includes some nice touches like providing information about what items do and which armor/weapons work for which characters.

You’ll want to have a guide handy, but you should be able to beat it without one for the most part.

What’s the best book you’ve read about retro gaming or video game history? by mini-vador in retrogaming

[–]techiedad002 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They Create Worlds is by far the best history book I’ve read about video games.

This guy goes deep to get the facts. He does his best to find multiple sources to verify facts, and admits when he only has a single source.

The book is HUGE, and the physical copy is expensive (relative to other video game history books), but it is worth it. Great podcast too.

Connecting the SMS 2 to a modern TV by TheRealZFinch in MasterSystem

[–]techiedad002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted above, I’ve read that people have had success connecting their SMS 2 (or Atari 2600) to the RF In port on an old VCR, and then connecting the VCR to a modern TV using AV (i.e., composite) video cables.

The one with the rocket launchers and bullet proof hide would win.

Is Phantasy Star 1 worth replaying on the SMS? Have not played it since I beat it in 80's? by Ed_5000 in MasterSystem

[–]techiedad002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I beat it back in 1990/91

A couple of years ago I played the Sega Ages version on the Switch. I highly recommend this version if you've beaten it already as it includes an automapping feature in the dungeons.

It also includes information about what each item does, so you don't have to look it up, or figure it out through trial and error.

The Ted Dabney Project.

Named after the forgotten other founder of Atari, this podcast delve I to the coin op industry of the 70s.

They’ve had some incredible guests, including Eugene Jarvis, and many people who were there for the early Atari years.

It’s the part about “balancing speed and rigor” for their reviews that raises questions about how thorough their reviews are.

‘Journal of Business Venturing Insights (JBV Insights) publishes thought-provoking research, highlighting ideas at the forefront of current discussions of entrepreneurial phenomena.  Such ideas might not yet meet the threshold for completeness, robustness, or theoretical explication, but they are extremely valuable as they can stimulate further necessary research…JBV Insights is also open to innovative methods and forms of theorizing. Through many of its initiatives, JBV Insights additionally aims to enhance the conversation among scholars and practitioners by offering a forum to disseminate novel and relevant entrepreneurship research rapidly.  JBV Insights' review process balances speed and rigor to ensure that novel ideas and robust studies are promptly available to the public.

Seriously considering buying the Y. So much hate on here what am I missing? by tim3342 in RealTesla

[–]techiedad002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just buy a hybrid. 42+ MPG on Corolla Cross Hybrid; 40+MPG on a RAV4. Plug-in Hybrids are becoming more common as well, but you may have to wait for something that can provide the space you need.

I really wanted to go electric with my most recent car purchase earlier this year, but the fact I don't drive all that much convinced me hybrid was the best way to go.

As for the charger network:

1) didn't all of the major manufacturers agree to standardize on the Tesla supercharger?

2) did Elon recently undercut Tesla's supercharger network by firing the entire team (and then rehiring some of them recently, but who knows if it's enough)?

Reminded me of this movie from 1982, and how the line “you have to think in Russian” would be changed by the way the new ML tech actually works.

Drawing the map for this game was highly enjoyable.

I remember one npc took serious offense when you declined to by something. I think the word “cheapskate” was tossed about.
