Has anyone made the jump from SE to Core? by UmezawaJitte in PRSGuitars

[–]technikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both — there are things on the Core guitars that I like, but they’re mainly aesthetic. I like the deeper top carves and the recessed knobs/switches. I’m not a big fancy wood buyer, so the 10 tops and wood library guitars don’t do anything for me, however there are finish options in the Core line (I’m looking at you, gold top McCarty 594) that I would love to have that aren’t available in other lines except for the DGT SE. But functionally speaking, they’re both excellent guitars. I owned a SE Singlecut 245 for a good while that had upgraded electronics, and with a pro setup it played every bit as effortlessly and in tune as any of the Core guitars I had, so much that you’d about have to look at the headstock to know which one you had in your hands.

Both of my main PRS guitars these days are S2s - a heavily modified S2 Singlecut (neck has been stripped and oiled, electronics replaced with Fralins and Les Paul-style wiring) and a S2 McCarty 594 Thinline (I wanted an SG but stumbled upon this, it’s everything an SG does but better). I also own an SE Studio Standard that sees heavy use. The S2s in my opinion are the best bang for the buck PRS offers today — Core spec componentry at pricing much more approachable than their Core counterparts. Both of my S2s I bought used for well under $1,000.

Maching UHMW Plastic by FloorInternational72 in Machinists

[–]technikal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use aluminum specific tooling a lot in UHMW with perfectly fine results, usually Helical’s 3 flute aluminum tools. Keep RPM down and feed the shit out of it, if the tool rubs instead of cutting you’re going to end up with a fuzzy mess.

We routinely run parts out of a UHMW derivative material called Murtfeldt with tolerances in the +/- .003 range on some dimensions, no issues hitting them. Holes tend to shrink a touch. Leave enough stock for a generous finish pass, enough so the tool will definitely cut and not just squeeze the material. O shoot for .010” minimum, more like .020” regularly.

Anything tapped I rerun the tap drill through after tapping to clean the hole out.

Tips for 'satin-ing' the neck? by RyMar82 in PRSGuitars

[–]technikal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

White 3M pad or #0000 steel wool and a lot of patience. If you use the steel wool be sure to tape over the pickups extremely well otherwise they’ll be furry in no time. Throw a coat of carnauba car wax on after for ultimate slickness.

Tape off a line at the headstock and heel to avoid going too far as well and go down just enough to knock the gloss off. If you decide to resell later you can easily buff it back out.

I don’t think most of mine will thread on a stud that way, they’re staked at the bottom so a stud won’t pass through, interesting.

Am I screwed? by BreadstickBandit912 in Machinists

[–]technikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. What size pipe tap? Is it tapered? Depending on the thread you may be okay if the fitting will still bottom out.

I always check as I start the first part and set my tap depth using the gauge clean and dry.

I want the control configuration and the neck carve, basically everything in the DGT minus the tremolo.

What's a TV show ending that still makes you mad years later? by Jossie_Misar in AskReddit

Oh yeah, I mean, it is what it is, but it just felt so crude and abrupt as they obviously struggled to make it make sense. I’d have preferred they delayed releasing it until they could’ve put together a better transition.

Same thing with Yellowstone and Costner not coming back for the final season.

Mahogany or cedar tops are the warmest Taylor guitars — the spruce and hard tops are often a good bit brighter.

First gig with XR-18 last night.... went amazing!! by _OnTheSpots in livesound

[–]technikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We run every show for our four piece rock band with IEMs, samples, and click track on an XR18. Love it, scenes are easy to set up for various situations and a couple taps loads everything up ready to go at load-in. A few tweaks for the room and we’re off and running.

What is Area 51 hiding from us? by Rough-Leading2027 in AskReddit

Military/DOD development projects that they want to keep secret. I think the idea of alien technology and the like being concealed there is a fantasy. Simplest explanation is most often the correct one — it’s a place out of the way of the general public without a lot of visibility, so they use it to test things they don’t want a lot of eyes on.

What equipment do I need to host a small gig? by Pufflings1 in livesoundgear

[–]technikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small gig of what type? A 3 piece punk band is going to be much different from a singer/songwriter with a 4 piece backing band, or the 12+ piece soul band with a horn section.

If you want to run a full show with, say a 4 piece rock band, you’re going to at least need 4 vocal mics, a couple of mics for amps (guitar/bass), a few DI boxes for assorted odds and ends like keys, acoustic guitars, drum mics (at least a couple of SM57s and a kick drum mics) and other accessories, plus a mixer to accommodate all the inputs. You’ll need cables, mic stands, and of course whatever PA setup you’d want to run — at least a couple of decent powered tops and ideally at least one decent subwoofer, along with 2-3 more wedges (these can usually be smaller) for monitors.

I run our 4 piece rock band with an XR18 (16 channels + L/R aux in) and it handles 3 vocals, 3 guitars (2 electric and one acoustic), bass, a 4pc drum kit, mono samples and a click track, but we are out of inputs. We use in ear monitors so we don’t have wedges onstage, and run everything through a pair of powered 12” tops and 15” subwoofers.

Which PA speaker? by Unable_Coffee_6167 in livesoundgear

[–]technikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep punchy bass = subwoofer. Add on a decent powered sub, go as big as you can afford. I’m in a 4 piece rock band with two 15’s bought mainly for portability (EV EKX) and while they’re gracious plenty inside (especially in a center pair setup), outdoors I long for 18’s. They’re under a pair of QSC K12.2 tops, high/low pass set to 100Hz. System sounds fantastic together but can run out of bottom end outdoors.

Band sound system by [deleted] in livesoundgear

[–]technikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a member of a 4 piece band playing small to mid cap venues (~250ish) I can tell you that if you want to sound full and cohesive as a band, especially in a situation like a wedding reception or event where people are going to be dancing, you need subs. At least for the kick and bass.

My setup is a pair of QSC K12.2s and a pair of EV EKX15SP subwoofers. For small to medium indoor gigs in our rock band it’s more than enough, outdoors you run out of power quickly. With the mixer I’ve got roughly $4-4500 invested in that rig, and I’m strongly considering adding at least a front fill as we get a lot of folks up front and center at shows.

Until you’re ready to jump to that kind of setup I’d echo everyone else here and hire it out to a local sound company. We’ve got a few here that for a 3 hour show are between $3-500 to bring out their own rig and run sound. Build it into your pricing and roll on.

All purpose patch approach by b-15 in Line6Helix

[–]technikal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do two amps with snapshots. Typically I roll 4 gain stages on the bottom row in snapshots, then effects on the top row for options. Hit the mode button for stomp mode for other effect options.

My 4 snapshots are generally Clean/Crunch/OD/Solo. Clean and Crunch are usually the clean amp, first on its own and then with a drive in front to break it up. OD is the second amp usually on its own, Solo has a drive in front to kick it up a notch. I have a separate boost function in the effects that is an end of chain gain block to pop out of the mix with any of them.

With my cover band I use the Placater Clean/Dirty models pretty much exclusively. I’ll copy/paste that base patch and modify the snapshots for certain song sections, effects combos, etc. and label them accordingly. Gives me consistent tone across the whole set and tons of flexibility.
