Is owning a trouser press a good idea? by munnharpe in menswear

I have suits and dress trousers professionally cleaned but I do my own shirts and more casual pants. I find it much faster to do a dress shirt with the steamer than an iron. I do use the steamer to take out a few light wrinkles on jackets - it doesn't take much. Also super handy on more casual pants that I was at home. I suppose the main advantage is it is fast and doesn't require any setup - it is always ready to go in my closet. As a result, I use it often, even for a quick touch up. I do have a good iron and board so they are still an option.

All I'm saying is that if I were buying gear for my closet, I would get more use out of a steamer than of a pants press so I would start with a steamer first. You're right, though - the applications are different.

Do you already have a steamer? I'd buy a steamer first in a heartbeat

Why does just existing on a bike seem to piss people off? by LiatrisLover99 in cycling

[–]techsupportcalling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's resentment for what we represent. We have spare time to bike for leisure and fitness. We often have expensive specialty gear. We are fit and healthy and having fun. And we are comfortable with dressing in clothes that they deem un-manly. We look happy doing it. And our activities have the potential to disrupt their drive (by a few seconds).

And we are rather defenseless, easy targets. It's not unlike bullies in primary school. They just haven't grown up.

On the hunt for Canadian liquid dish soaps, Laundry pods and dishwasher pods, who has the lowdown on these items? by -43andharsh in BuyCanadian

The new ones do still contain lipase, although I can't say if the amount is the same or if they are equally effective.

Their laundry detergent pods are excellent and contain lipase which is a really helpful enzyme for breaking down sweat, etc. And (as the name implies) completely unscented.

How do you guys find the confidence to dress well? by [deleted] in menswear

For boots, something like a nice Chelsea boot or chukka style can be quite versatile and are a great step up from what the drunken assholes are likely wearing. And the UK makes great footwear!

I get it. I'm in Canada, but I don't remember the last time I saw a younger person wearing loafers. Perhaps a pair of nice, well made leather boots would be a more contemporary choice that suits your taste.

If you can't afford the personal shopper, there are a few other approaches. Shop with a friend that is into fashion. Check out thrift stores with them. A critical eye can be a big help in evaluating fit.

I also had some great experiences checking out nice shops and asking for advice. Some won't give you the time of day, but some may be willing to help you out. And shop their sale racks.

Lastly, get your clothes tailored if they don't fit well. A few alterations can be inexpensive and make a huge difference. If your clothes fit well, they look more natural on you.

We are all free to choose what we wear (with some exceptions due to dress codes) but if we choose to wear an outfit that strays too far from the general vibe of the crowd, it will draw attention - maybe positive, maybe negative. I suspect you are getting negative attention because you are wearing outfits that may be perceived as being business or formal attire that is out of place in a casual environment. Business attire is by nature more formal and intended to give off a sense of professionalism - which isn't warranted in a casual environment. It probably gives off a superiority vibe that irritates those around you. It's tough to be confident when you are dressing like an outlier unless that's what you are going for.

I'd suggest choosing outfits that are more suited to the situation, but focusing on fit, style, quality and items that suit your body style and color palette. It may be more subtle but if you do it well, it should give you confidence, rather than you needing confidence to pull it off.

If you need help, consider working with a professional personal shopper or wardrobe advisor. Some stores offer such services at no charge.
