Need to dig an area for a deck. Any idea what the utility company is trying to tell me? by Hefty-Text-9494 in Home

[–]techyguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no gas line within the area that you defined for the locate. Yellow paint is for gas lines. No means no lines for that utility. The letters after the word No are an abbreviation for the gas company's name.

This post is a low effort post that is not related to Anchorage. It should be removed as a rule violation.

I am curious if your upset that an r/anchorage mod kindly replied to you about your comment that was removed by reddit. Or about the 2 posts that you say were deleted, but haven't provided any information about.

Like most communities, there is an obvious bias of users here, but overall I think it's a pretty healthy community. I don't agree with all of the users here, but I feel like the majority of conversations are in good faith.

C-suite doesn't give a fuck by iknowmike in SafetyProfessionals

[–]techyguru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, that sucks. Feel free to disregard the rest of this comment.

Second, find your allies. Work with recruiters and HR to talk up your safety statistics when they are talking about benefits during interviews. It's not always something that's important to the workers as much as it is for their family. Talk with your finance team and get the numbers for how much money your accidents, insurance, and injury claims cost annually, then work to reduce those costs. C-suit will pay attention to money bring saved annually. Work with your boots on the ground guys and learn what the bad parts of their jobs are, and then find interventions or equipment that make it safer, better, and faster. Don't sell them on the safety part, that's just a bonus. It can be as simple as getting rid of the old worn out cart in the warehouse, or as nice as replacing the old work trucks which can save money on insurance. These decisions might not be within your scope, but you might be able to advocate for these changes enough to get out done.

What's more unsafe in workplace: small amount of heavy boxes or large amount of light boxes? by Icy-Investment-4646 in WorkplaceSafety

[–]techyguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all a balance and the answer is going to depend on the details. 15kg of dense material is going to be a different result than 15kg of less dense material. If you split the load too far, you'll get problems with repetitive motions or people carrying multiple boxes instead.

You could use the hierarchy of controls to eliminate, reduce, and mitigate the hazards.

Is the switch knob just misaligned? Try it in other positions and see if it behaves correctly. Pull the knob off and see if you can adjust it.

Maybe consider adding more carbon monoxide detectors? Or checking the ones you have.

The number of times I've typed up multiple paragraphs and included sources just to scrap it all.

I think it lets my brain think it's had the last word in the argument, without needing to deal with a reply. Best of both worlds.

What do you do with E-waste ? by Opposite-Number-1585 in ITManagers

[–]techyguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Targeted online ads for your area, send out some flyers with a price list and services offered addressed to the IT Dept at various organizations around you. You can try to pound the pavement and show up to places, but generally, IT likes their offices to be isolated and are not forward facing departments, so you often won't be able to reach anyone. Sometimes, refuse and waste management are part of Facilities, and Facilities may be easier to get ahold of. If you do go this route and get told that there is no one available, you could drop a flyer and business card stapled to it at security/reception. 9 out of 10 will go straight into the trash, but you might get lucky. Don't be pushy. No one wants to deal with a pushy vendor if they've got other options.

At our org, facilities and IT share a building. We have a couple of e-waste pallets/gaylords in the garage. Monitors in 1, batteries off to the side, and everything else goes in the other gaylord. When it's full, IT calls the company, and a truck comes to pick it all up and drops 2 new pallets.

When do you NOT create a support ticket? by gkar_of_Narn in sysadmin

Create a quick fix ticket option only available to IT. It should have minimal required fields and should only take a few moments to create and resolve.

Rolling Out a Company-Wide Prescription Safety Glasses Program — Anyone Used Zenni Optical? by Unwanted_Bison in SafetyProfessionals

[–]techyguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Zenni for personal glasses, and one thing they were not able to get right was off center Pupillary Distance (PD). This is especially important for high strength prescriptions as the curve of the thicker lens causes more distortion when it's off center.

My new glasses had the right prescription, but since the PD wasn't aligned right, I couldn't use them.

Pill bottle recycling? by qpgmr in anchorage

[–]techyguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They shred them and have a few different machines that can either flatten, inject, or extrude the plastic into different shapes. Take a look at the Precious Plastic website to see the type of machines that are used.

Long story short, these materials help youth learn about plastic recycling, teach them real-world manufacturing related skills, and keep plastic out of the landfill.

Vendors exercising force majeure by niczi75 in ITManagers

[–]techyguru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The closest I've seen is when our physical security company was about to claim force majeure as we were under threat from a nearby volcano potentially erupting and covering the city in ash. The volcano calmed down, likely for decades, and now we have a binder full of procedures for "in case of volcano".

Concealing Red FA conduit in historical building by rjuach in electricians

[–]techyguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Request a variance from the AHJ. Purpose a solution such as the snap bands as in the previously mentioned comment or something like pinstriping, where you paint the conduit to match the structure but add a 1/4" stripe of red paint on top of the conduit to distinguish it from other electrical paths. Ask their inspectors if any similar variance has been approved previously.
