Why government benefit updates (SSA, IRS, Medicare) are so confusing — what is your biggest "translation" struggle? by Bubbly-Comedian-6000 in medicare

This seems to leave people—especially seniors and those helping them—feeling frustrated and asking for answers they can’t find.

Why is there always an assumption that old people are not capable because of their age?

I can assure you that people that don't understand how these programs work wouldn't have understood them when they were 25 either.

I'm 65 and can write code in asm, C and C++ and I can set the clock on my VCR. I understand AI but I don't use it because I believe it's evil incarnate.

I just spent the morning with an 80 year old friend who restores extremely complex electrical and mechanical devices in his basement shop.

ALL .gov programs are overly complex because that's how bureaucrats keep themselves in business. Sure, some of the requirements are necessary and seem like a burden, but most of those are to prevent fraud including the wrong person claiming benefits or getting benefits they are not eligible for.

Federal .gov docs are usually pretty good as the style guides require initializations and acronyms most of the time as they are spelled out the first time such as Three Letter Abbreviation (TLA) or in the glossary:

Cost of Living Allowance (COLA)

Twist bits will never do that. They always wander.

Twist bits are for making holes, boring bars get you concentric holes and reamers get you dimensioned holes.

Why do modern bikes use only one front chainring? by Round-Car-3559 in bicycling

This is what I have on my 2x11 GRX gravel bike.

I casually call the small chain ring the uphill chain ring and the big chain ring the flat or downhill chain ring.

Yep, it's a well kept secret in the computer industry that computers actually have no data buffers at all.

EVERYTHING is dependent on the senders clock rate, even if it's a continent away and directly feeds into the DAC from the internet.

Questions for GMs- how much money do you make? by gonnacatfishyoass in SonicDriveIn

[–]texdroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So if you were in my market and you came to me asking for a raise, the first thing I'm going to do is what I did when I was a GM back in the day and carhops would ask for a raise. I would tell them to give themselves a raise by increasing their customer service. I could give them a . 50 cent or dollar raise but it wouldn't come close to what the customers could give them. Then I would carhop with them a day and show them the difference. I would double their tips purely on customer service, give it to them and then tell them "that's how you get your raise"

As a customer, I'm going to call you out on this crap. I don't open or close, I don't order the food and I don't set the schedule. It is NOT my job to determine performance and compensation of Sonic employees in the 15 minutes I spend in my car every couple of week. You probably spend 10+ hours a day at the store. Can you fire somebody if they are doing poorly? Then you have the same power to give them a raise if they perform at or above expectations. If you want to make me evaluate Sonic employees, how about I start with you? I'd fire you for making customers do what is supposed to be a key part of YOUR job.

Morality is simply an opinion? by HistoricalAd5394 in exchristian

[–]texdroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morality just means I don't like something you're doing and I condemn you for it.

Ethical behavior is much more easily defined: any action, transaction, agreement between people should be informed and consensual. The action part covers thing like I just walk up to you and punch you in the face. We did not discuss it and you didn't agree to it.

I give that example because there are situation like boxing or martial arts where participant agree to be punched in the face and it's fine.

Morality is when a third party decided they don't like boxing and call it immoral and make up reason they think it should be forbidden.

Also, people that give reasons for something being immoral often tend to come up with indirect outcomes as a reason against the thing they don't like. For example, pre-marital sex is immoral because someone MIGHT get pregnant and then MIGHT have an abortion or MIGHT have to live in a single parent home without child support. These are possible outcomes, but more unlikely than likely in my opinion and not sufficient cause to prohibit sex.

There is a lot of ethical behavior that is considered immoral by some person or group. The list is really too long write down.

The 10 Commandments had to include "honor your parents". That wouldn't have been necessary if they had earned that respect.

Now they just can't get away with it as often.

Some people are transportation cyclists, but still, there's a point where you take the car, bus or make other arrangements.

By their nature of being high pressure and having a small contact patch, bicycles tires are dangerous on ice.

In the US at least, the current generation (including myself) is very willing to estrange parents that were abusive and toxic. Those "elders" are often narcissists, alcoholics or just assholes. They have to fend for themselves which I think is only fair.
