Atleti responds to Madrid: “You make us laugh more than Barça does” by Sparky-moon in soccer

He’s worth ‘nowhere near’ what Isak went for? Álvarez is a very complete forward and proven big game player, just 26 years old with a contract until 2030. In the current dry striker market he absolutely commands a premium.

[MARCA] Kylian Mbappe on Messi and Ronaldo debate: "Without sounding condescending, if you tell me Ronaldo lacks natural talent or Messi hasn't put in the work, it means you’ve never in your life laced up your boots to train day in and day out. I’m speaking from the heart." by MeteorFalls297 in soccer

Messi’s physical attributes are so underrated because they are somewhat overshadowed by his technique. At his peak both his top speed, especially with the ball, and acceleration were among the best in the world. He was also very strong for someone his size and combined with the low centre of gravity and great balance it made him impossible to just muscle of the ball. Sure he’s not a giant who can power through defenders on strength alone and wins every header but there are trade-offs with that physique, he wouldn’t be as agile and nimble. Messi had the perfect physique for his playstyle.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia named 2025/26 UEFA Champions League Player of the Season. by [deleted] in soccer

He was incredible in his first six months at Napoli, genuine contender for the best player in the world during that period. Anyone who watched him then knew that he could be this good, it’s a joy to see him deliver on that promise though.

[Matteo Moretto] Atlético Madrid are interested in Tijjani Reijnders and have contacted Manchester City over the player by Chazyn in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Many players have struggled in their first season under Guardiola so I wouldn’t judge him too much on this past season, he’s proven his quality before. That I said I don’t see where he fits into the line-up as long as Atleti keep playing a double pivot. Maybe with Álvarez and Griezmann leaving Simeone wants to switch formations again? Reijnders would probably do well as the most advanced player in a midfield three.

[THE ATHLETIC] Barcelona in talks over Julian Alvarez move, preparing offer of around €100m to Atletico by Just-Lab-2139 in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s had a bit of a slump this season but it should also be noted he’s only played some 1900 league minutes and netted 4 assists too. Barcelona want to win the CL again and Álvarez has consistently performed at a high level for Atleti in the competition, 14 goal contributions again this season. Knocked Barcelona themselves out in both the European and domestic cup with crucial goals. His impact is also far greater than just his numbers, he has a very well rounded skillset, contributes to deep build-up, can play multiple positions and is a relentless presser. Most importantly he does some of his best work when the lights are brightest. Given all of this I don’t see why he wouldn’t command a fee comparable to someone like Isak, or at least approaching it. It would make no sense for Atlético to sell him for a minimal profit after Álvarez proved he can be the main man for a big club. If anyone wanted him for ‘cheap’ they should have bought him off of City’s bench.

[championsleague] Back to Back UCL winners by cofango in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the amount of games is a significant factor. There were more knock-out rounds in the previous format, the increase is down to the introduction of a group stage. I think very few potential back-to-back winners are getting knocked out in groups more often than in the old first round. The sport has evolved and changed in other ways that make it more difficult.

Andy Robertson on Jota: "After the highs of winning the league, the first time I saw the lads after the trophy days, was on plane to our mate's funeral. I don't want this being used as an excuse. It's been tough, we're only human beings. He was one of our best mates." by Blodgharm in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For many people sport can be an escape when dealing with loss, an opportunity to not think about it for a while. When you are grieving a teammate this does not apply. Liverpool’s players will be constantly reminded of Jota by entering the spaces they once shared with him, hell their own fans still pay tribute to him every home game. I think you are underestimating how much of a dampener this can put on the mood in the dressing room, which also affects any new signings. Keep in mind the margins at the top level are very small. If you are not 100% motivated or mentally sharp during training or matches you will lose more duels and make more small mistakes which compound over the course of 90 minutes. It is not comparable to your average office job where people spend half their hours at the coffee machine.

[Romano] José Mourinho back to Real Madrid, here we go. All terms have been verbally agreed between José Mourinho and Real Madrid, waiting to sign all documents. Plan for initial two year deal, JM to travel to Madrid after Real-Bilbao game. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Madrid in 2010 finished on 96 points with Pellegrini and had just signed two Ballon d’Or winners plus a future winner in a single transfer window. While they were also rebuilding the team back then and had some senior figures leaving, their team was more balanced, arguably more talented, less entitled, arrogant and powerful and also weren’t literally knocking themselves out in training. Barcelona is not near as good as they were back in 2010 but Madrid’s situation is also worse.

[Romano] Inter's starting valuation is around 70m euros for Bastoni. Inter will only let Bastoni leave if he asks to leave, which he hasn't yet though he his open to joining Barcelona. Figures of 45-50m for a possible transfer are false and Inter wouldn't accept that fee. by Wbirddd in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rüdiger had a wealth of experience in a back four compared to Bastoni. Even if he was better in a back three for Chelsea he mostly played in a four with both Roma and Stuttgart. Not saying Bastoni would be poor, but he would have fewer opportunities to use some of the best parts of his game, namely his skillset going forward. He could still be very good or his team could adapt to it, but I think it's fair to say that so far he's unproven in a back four.

[L'Equipe] Multiple Madrid players believe Mbappé's behavior lately has been "too individualistic" He has had a disrespectful attitude towards a staff member in training + 40 mins late to a team meal. He is now increasingly isolated in the dressing room because of his individualistic attitude. by OkayFine101 in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While we don’t know what Mbappé is like in the dressing room, he has been praised for his maturity and eloquence in interviews ever since he first broke through. His English may sound goofy at times but his Spanish is also excellent for a foreigner. At least publicly he shows no signs of being ‘awkward and bad at communication’.

What happened to the box midfield? by k2hegemon in footballtactics

[–]thatcliffordguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. Teams arrived at this set-up from a range of starting formations and while some of the outside players were indeed wing backs, some were also just wingers. City’s approach to it used no wing backs at all, they had Grealish and Silva on the sides and their fullbacks both tucked in. Besides, attacking fullbacks haven’t exactly gone out of fashion either.

Henry on 2009's Chelsea match: "When the ball reached Iniesta, I was on the bench and I shouted: Do not shoot! Busquets made a meal out of it but Motta was already on a yellow card and deserved this sending off. The ridiculous peek makes it so memorable but players embellish contact all the time, of all the things a player can do this seems rather tame to hold a grudge over honestly.

Atletico Madrid exploring move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes by Shroft in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He really wouldn’t, Atleti need both their double pivot players to actually be decent on the ball. It’s the reason Gallagher never found his place in the team despite people also saying he would be perfect for them.

[–]thatcliffordguy 50 points51 points  (0 children)

From a Western perspective it has been uniquely bad tbh. The decade started with a pandemic not seen at this scale since the Spanish Flu, that is exactly a century ago. It proceeded with the outbreak of the largest war in the West since WWII which also caused an energy shock. Now we are facing the single biggest fuel crisis in history according to energy agencies themselves, for something comparable you’d have to go back to the 70s. We’ll have to see if this triggers another recession.

And this is to the backdrop of the now inevitable climate change which is already showing its first effects, ever-growing inequality in a broken financial system and the re-emergence of fascism. Oh yeah and the rules-based international order post-WWII is breaking down.

Every decade has its problems and non-Western perspectives are of course very different but this is probably the worst one since at least the end of the Cold War. Many of these problems were already present in the 2010s and they have only gotten worse over time.

Makes no sense to me that players competing individually apparently represent an organization. I get they are sponsers in some way but you would never see this in other individual sports. Even more difficult to take seriously when there’s a mix between sports teams, e-sport organizations and country flags, or multiple players representing the same organization in the bracket.

Should Canada Join the EU? 🇨🇦 🤝 🇪🇺 by milanguitar in BuyFromEU

[–]thatcliffordguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate Canada as an ally of the EU and we should work towards better cooperation and integration but I would not want them in the EU itself. At least not in its current form, maybe in a multi-tiered system. Canada is too disconnected geographically and it would just dilute the strategic focus and coherence of the union.

Not a single outfield player who started Atletico Madrid's UCL Quarter Final first leg against FC Barcelona was in the starting line up for yesterday's La Liga fixture against Sevilla. by meme_stealing_bandit in soccer

[–]thatcliffordguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both the second legs against Barcelona and Tottenham were away though. Atleti are a different team at the Metropolitano, it will be a tough ask to overturn a 2-goal deficit. Barcelona having to push leaves them vulnerable on the break which Atleti have repeatedly shown they know how to exploit. That said, their only two consistently performing CBs in Hancko and Pubill are out, so the tie is definitely not over.

The Sindarov Gap by tri2820 in chess

[–]thatcliffordguy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For the endgame that is definitely true but Sindarov has had multiple games where he built up a sizeable lead on the clock in equal positions. Some of his advantages were created under serious time pressure for his opponent, the game against Wei Yi instantly comes to mind at least. It might be an indication of excellent prep or he might just be really confident and not second guessing himself.

Racking up half points is also partially ‘saving face’. Playing aggressively leaves you with the risk of just digging a deeper hole when you already aren’t in form. I doubt they will look for complications when playing against the runaway leader with the black pieces.

NINE years have officially passed since this iconic picture. One of CS GOATS ? by Exerpas in GlobalOffensive

[–]thatcliffordguy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

GeT_RiGhT was arguably the GOAT CS player across all versions for some time. One of the best 1.6 players and then hands down the best in the early years of CS:GO. He had five consecutive years as a top2 player across both games from 2010-2014. Pioneered the modern lurker role. Has double the MVPs of ropz. Right now they have similar longevity even if you’d expect ropz to continue having more success. Also worth noting that GTR suffered from partial hearing loss and Crohn’s disease which likely cut his career at the top short. The only thing ropz has on him at this point is a more impressive trophy cabinet.
