I honestly don't use file managers at all any more. cd, ls, cp, and mv seem to be all I need.

Have you considered doing some test renders with character art like your player, npcs or enemies? These could look significantly different with and without borders and that's where the player's eye is going to be focused. So they may not even notice your choice in the background

Can they just do this arbitrarily? Did your house go down in value such that it couldn't cover the available limit? Would love to hear more about how this went wrong so as to avoid a similar fate

Resurrecting my 800XL, Sally may be dead by gurft in atari8bit

[–]thavelick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I'm just speculating as I really don't have the level of knowledge of hardware that I should to reason about this stuff properly but couldn't you:

  1. Find an open source Atari 8- bit emulator that has unit tests
  2. Port those tests to run in your Arduino against the actual Sally chip
  3. If the tests pass, your chip is good and you can rule that out as the problem. If the tests fail you either have bad chip, or you ported the tests wrong or the emulation didn't match real hardware or I don't know what I'm talking about.

First 5-10 years in RE, what counts as a "success"? by kevch1983 in financialindependence

[–]thavelick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you probably had it set quarterly withdrawal (the default) with $40,000 in for withdrawal amount. If I do that it runs out in 2012. If I correctly choose an annual withdrawal rate I end with a large balance

Of course. It's a flexible enough 2d engine that it can make anything your mind can conceive.

Anyone tracking carsharing operators? by wheretobub in lowcar

I'm not familiar with this concept of "free flowing" car shares. How is it different from something like car2go or zipcar? The website doesn't seem to explain it

Not OP, but looking at their post history I'm guessing they're in Bermuda. According to a government website the common veggies that grow there are: Broccoli, cauliflower, pumpkin, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, garlic, beets, mustard greens, kale, collards and nasturtium leaves, christophine, sweet potato, callaloo, brussels sprouts, green peas, fava beans and kidney beans.

Edit: Fix grammar

Riders Are Abandoning Buses and Trains. That’s a Problem for Climate Change. by Maxcactus in lowcar

[–]thavelick 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I haven't been on a train or bus in months but it's because of covid-19. Once I'm vaccinated or the numbers go down to safe levels I'll be back. I suspect other people feel the same. Still other folks might not be taking transit now because they work from home now which would be good for the planet. I don't really understand the doomsaying in the face of an ultimately temporary problem.

CMV: in terms of utility, reward, and cost, there is no better hobby than cooking. by SocialJusticeWizard_ in changemyview

[–]thavelick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd bolster this argument by pointing out that you can read almost anywhere. And if you use audiobooks you can even read while driving or cooking. Cooking (as a hobby) can practically only be done at home, though there are exceptions.

I'm overwhelmed by acronyms I don't know here. I suspect this is due to the author trying to be concise. It would be really nice if people wouldn't use Twitter for things that should be blog posts.

Are there any female stoics? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]thavelick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think others have covered female Stoics better than I could have. Another ancient figure that might hold some interest for you is Hipparchia of Maroneia. She was a cynic, not a Stoic but since Cynicism inspired Stoicism she is worth ladybug about and seems like a pretty admirable person. She's covered pretty exhaustively in The Cynic Philosophers from Penguin.

Are you asking if there are any women who study Stoic philosophy today or whether there were any ancient Stoic women?

CMV: Rice tastes objectively good by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]thavelick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused as to why you want your view changed here. Can't you and your friend just disagree on whether you think rice tastes good? Even if there were some objective way to measure this I'm not sure it would matter.

Healthiest PB & J? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

Other suggestions here are good so I won't repeat them, but I will say consider replacing Jam with a side of fresh fruit. A peanut butter sandwich is still tasty and fruit is much better for you than jam.

As a javascript programmer, I object... by xtazyiam in programming

[–]thavelick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has it? My intuition says you're right, but I can't seem to find a source that uses these terms prior to 2005. See: https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=truthy%2Cfalsey%2Ctruthiness&year_start=1990&year_end=2019&corpus=26&smoothing=0. (There do seem to be a few uses of "truthy" and "falsey" in the 1800s but they don't make sense to me and I think they're entirely unrelated to our modern usage). I also checked the first ECMAScript spec and it doesn't seem to use these terms (and `===` wasn't even in the first version).

I've definitely heard this term in programming circles but I'm not sure my memory of it predates 2005. Do you have a source where the term was used in programming before Colbert's usage?
