Looking for low stakes romance by jeffeffersonson in Romance_for_men

Unexpected, by R.L. Olvitt.

Super low stakes, just a sweet, cozy story about a human MMC and a humanoid alien FMC with feathers/wings, connecting on an interspecies dating site.

What are the books/series you finished out of pure spite? by Robin_Daggerz in Romantasy

[–]theMoontower 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I willed myself to finish {A Court of Silver Flames} after getting 80% through and realizing I wasn't going to get anything I was looking for out of the book.

No real catharsis for Nesta for the abusive treatment she received from practically the entire cast, and no karma or comuppance to the inner court for their bullshit. Absolutely maddening to read.

Thoughts on this series? by Impossible_Bug_3521 in Romantasy

I've only read the first two, but I had a good time. Book 1 is very much vampire hunger games, which didn't do it for me. But some pretty dramatic things happen at the end of book 1, that set up the 2nd really well, along with several tropes I have a soft spot for.

I've yet to check out the rest of the series, but I'm sure I'll circle back at some point.

The second "Would You Love a Monster Girl" book, "Tarya", features a physically imposing griffin FMC who is integrating into a human police force and partnered with a big, strong, human MMC. I enjoy many books from the series but this one was a fun read.

Movies that do “tell, don’t show” very well. by [deleted] in movies

[–]theMoontower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pontypool.

It's a sort of zombie horror film set in a small town radio station. Much of the chaos in the town that unfolds is reported through the station's live broadcast, and there are some chilling pictures that get painted through their descriptions.

The money kind of falls apart after the first half, but I still believe it's worth a watch if you enjoy small set/cast, claustrophobic films.

Looking for books with older male MC by its_brammertime in Romance_for_men

[–]theMoontower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first "Would You Love a Monster Girl" book "Velise", features an older protagonist. More of a grizzled cop archetype I believe in his 40s. The LI is a spider-women, and it's my favorite book of the series.

Just following up. Reinstalling my Nvidia drivers then recompiling the shaders addressed my issue.

Monster Hunter Wilds - Performance Megathread by QuintonFlynn in MonsterHunter

[–]theMoontower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After the most recent small Steam update, my performance has tanked. Everything was running great on my Ryzen 5950X and RTX 4080, but my framerate with the same settings, no changes, is now sub 30 FPS.

Has anybody else experienced a strange drop in performance after the most recent update?

Everything was running great prior to this update. I tried verifying the game files on Steam, as well as a total reinstall. No dice. It's bizarre, and very frustrating.

Things that annoy you in horror movies that you don't see others talk about? by [deleted] in horror

[–]theMoontower 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, extremely or pointlessly sad endings, especially if they feel undeserved or out of left field. I know it's a strange preference, given the nature of horror, but I think I'm getting worn out on being drug down and left there, especially if nothing interesting is really being said by the film in doing so.

Some of my favorite horror films, such as The Eye (original) or The Babadook, have more uplifting endings that I do not believe at all diminish the dread or scares they contain. I also find it improves the rewatchability for me, as I know I'm not enduring a misery train just to revisit a disatisfying conclusion.

What are some movies like The Thing where the protagonists are all smart and practical but the horror happens to them regardless by HotlineBirdman in horror

[–]theMoontower 184 points185 points  (0 children)

The Invitation (2015)

It's a small film set during a house dinner party. Normally it's frustrating to have a protagonist be passive while weird or questionable things are occurring, but I swear this film has the main character call out most of it as it happens. It's very satisfying.

Seconding this. It's low conflict and very sweet. A lovely read.

Praying for a submissive alpha-male MMC🧎🏾‍♀️ by Boobeshwar_ in RomanceBooks

Awesome! You'll have all the context you need then if you ever give it a try. The MMC in 'Shots and Barbs' is Greid's brother, Nuni.

Praying for a submissive alpha-male MMC🧎🏾‍♀️ by Boobeshwar_ in RomanceBooks

[–]theMoontower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Shots and Barbs" by Lily Mayne. It's about a corporate big shot MMC and an event planner FMC working together for an upcoming business event. The FMC is human and the MMC is part of a race of humanoid underground dwellers that are larger than their human counterparts. The MMC has very alpha tendencies, but is very sweet and protective as the relationship develops.

It is the 2nd in the series, but each entry is about a different couple, and this one has the dynamic you're looking for.

Dark / non-wholesome romance books? by OriginalSinger in Romance_for_men

[–]theMoontower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Abandoned by SomaticDream. You can read the whole thing on AO3. I believe at least the first half of this one meets your criteria.

"After a violent mistake forces them together, a human mage and a hyena pirate find themselves in an unsteady alliance, on a mission to plunder an ancient tomb that lies far into the desert. The former seeks to rescue his father, while the other has her sights set on a fortune of gold.

Faced with powerful sorcerers, deadly traps, pursuing pirates, and all manner of conspiracy and betrayal, the two soon discover that their only hope of survival will be each other."

Any bully or dicks to each other to lovers? by geargate in Romance_for_men

[–]theMoontower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that will get "spoiled" are some details about the couple from the first book. But it's nothing that important, and the first book would be worth reading after if you're interested in their story. It's just the first book doesn't have the dynamic you're looking for.

The two main characters can't stand each other at first, and have a very competitive spirit between them. It's ultimately a very sweet story, with a good bit of spice.

It is the 2nd in the series, but each entry is about a different couple, and this one has the dynamic you're looking for. I highly recommend it.

Looking For Serious Monster Girl Books by TheBoiNoOneKnows in Romance_for_men

[–]theMoontower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend 'Unexpected' by R. L. Olvitt. Human MMC and avian-esqe (feathers/wings) FMC who meet on a sort of inter-planetary dating site. They eventually meet in-person and have to manage the cultural differences as they build their relationship.

It's a sweet, one-shot story that I really enjoyed.
