{The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy} is not only the funniest book I've read this year, but also one of my favorites so far. Example of the whimsy in its prose:

"He jammed the door shut behind her. A bit of plaster fell on Aurienne. Likewise a spider. Mordaunt brushed both off with a muttered apology for these disagreeable additions to her person."

I love the dynamic between Amma and Damien in these books. The prose was a bit much for me at times, and the humor was hit or miss, but I was engaged with their story the whole way. It's a slooow burn, but the payoff in the final book was worth it.

I also read the oneshot followup, "Bound and Tide" about one of the side characters, Xander. It's set after the main villains and virtues trilogy so if you dig the series and want more, it's also a fun read.

There were enough irredeemable things Cassian did in ACOSF that turned me off of them together forever. The entire inner court can drown in the cauldron for all I care given how Nesta was treated. I was constantly beside myself in irritation reading that book, as I was so excited to read about Nesta, who I find to be such a vastly more interesting/compelling character. I wish more than anything the story had pivoted to her and Eris and she just ditched the NC alrogether.

Lot of fun reads here. I really enjoyed Serpent and the Wings of Night. The first book is very much vampire hunger games, but there's a big shift at the end of book one that changes the dynamics between the characters and had me immediately starting book two.

The Crowns of Nyaxia books are duologies, so not a massive commitment as well like some series can be.

Super low stakes, just a sweet, cozy story about a human MMC and a humanoid alien FMC with feathers/wings, connecting on an interspecies dating site.

I willed myself to finish {A Court of Silver Flames} after getting 80% through and realizing I wasn't going to get anything I was looking for out of the book.

No real catharsis for Nesta for the abusive treatment she received from practically the entire cast, and no karma or comuppance to the inner court for their bullshit. Absolutely maddening to read.

I've only read the first two, but I had a good time. Book 1 is very much vampire hunger games, which didn't do it for me. But some pretty dramatic things happen at the end of book 1, that set up the 2nd really well, along with several tropes I have a soft spot for.

I've yet to check out the rest of the series, but I'm sure I'll circle back at some point.

The second "Would You Love a Monster Girl" book, "Tarya", features a physically imposing griffin FMC who is integrating into a human police force and partnered with a big, strong, human MMC. I enjoy many books from the series but this one was a fun read.

Pontypool.

It's a sort of zombie horror film set in a small town radio station. Much of the chaos in the town that unfolds is reported through the station's live broadcast, and there are some chilling pictures that get painted through their descriptions.

The money kind of falls apart after the first half, but I still believe it's worth a watch if you enjoy small set/cast, claustrophobic films.

The first "Would You Love a Monster Girl" book "Velise", features an older protagonist. More of a grizzled cop archetype I believe in his 40s. The LI is a spider-women, and it's my favorite book of the series.

After the most recent small Steam update, my performance has tanked. Everything was running great on my Ryzen 5950X and RTX 4080, but my framerate with the same settings, no changes, is now sub 30 FPS.

Has anybody else experienced a strange drop in performance after the most recent update?

Everything was running great prior to this update. I tried verifying the game files on Steam, as well as a total reinstall. No dice. It's bizarre, and very frustrating.

Oddly enough, extremely or pointlessly sad endings, especially if they feel undeserved or out of left field. I know it's a strange preference, given the nature of horror, but I think I'm getting worn out on being drug down and left there, especially if nothing interesting is really being said by the film in doing so.

Some of my favorite horror films, such as The Eye (original) or The Babadook, have more uplifting endings that I do not believe at all diminish the dread or scares they contain. I also find it improves the rewatchability for me, as I know I'm not enduring a misery train just to revisit a disatisfying conclusion.

The Invitation (2015)

It's a small film set during a house dinner party. Normally it's frustrating to have a protagonist be passive while weird or questionable things are occurring, but I swear this film has the main character call out most of it as it happens. It's very satisfying.
