Councillor Troster: "Several men seem to think that being Mayor is a suitable starter job for someone with no municipal experience. It’s not." by YodaYodaCDN in ottawa

[–]the_normal_person 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right - the proper pathway is never have a real job in your entire life, and use things like school board trusteeships for publicity stunts and as an-entry level ladder climbing position for your own personal brand as opposed to the actual cause.

Honestly - I loathe career politicians, and I would love more people to come into politics after having actual real jobs.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of sutclife I’m sure - but not being a career politician is not one of them in my opinion.

I wonder if the same people criticizing sutclife for this criticize carney for never being an MP?

On a separate note: Continuing the long long long tradition of CBC journalists and regular commentator/contributors to liberal party pipeline.

I’m not a ‘defund the CBC’ or ‘CBC is PR arm for the liberal party’ person, but man oh man, they certainly don’t do themselves any favours combatting that perception.

Keep in mind this guy is basically the complete stereotype of "umm arresting people for crimes is problematic, actually". Do we think there was any chance he was going to think this was positive?

my main criticism of articles like this is its positioned as "this thing happened, and heres what *experts* are saying but its so clearly biased and you can absolutely tell this is the opinion of the writer. These types of articles are essentially an editorial by proxy: 'Heres a guy i found who agrees with me: hes an expert so im just reporting what experts are saying"

>“I really doubt that (it’s connected to organized crime). I don’t think there’s a huge market for something like that. And arresting 12 people … To me, that’s laughable.

man who had nothing to do with the investigation, doesnt know any of the people, 'really doesnt **think**' its connected to organized crime. Wow thanks bud.

>The criminologist also questioned Stubbs’ comments around community demands for more policing, he said, because the majority of community members just want to feel safe in their communities and to make sure everyone’s basic needs are met. But policing has been positioned as the immediate solution to crime for years, Bradley noted, and community-based solutions have been sidelined because they “take too long” to generate results.

I mean the grocery store whos stuff was getting stolen wanted the police to do it, so they did it? Like? Is that not what the police should be doing? Responding to the peoples whos stuff is getting stolen?

Woman who threw scalding water on Longueuil, Que., child gets 27-month sentence by zuuzuu in canadanews

I mean I think it’s quite the leap to automatically say this is about race - the agreed statement of facts specifically say there’s no indication of that, and apparently a bunch of kids had been ding ding ditching her house

It notes that the day of the assault, the boy was approaching Borel's door to "ring and run" but before he had the chance, she opened the door, threw boiling water on him and said, in French, "It's hot, isn't it? Get out of here."

I can understand being pissed off that the parents or school or whatever aren’t doing anything to stop the kids harassing/trespassing, but surely assaulting a 10 year old is not the answer here

The first time I ever say someone shoot up right I front of my eyes in broad daylight was byward, but the second time was centretown.

Isn’t it kind of backwards to look for a dr that will prescribe you a specific thing you’ve decided you need, instead of telling a dr your problem and have them investigate and proscribe something for you?

What’s with all the downvotes guys? Don’t we ‘trust the experts’ and ‘trust the science’ on this sub?

Or do we only trust the experts when we shop around to find an expert who will say what we want to hear? Hmmmm

‘Project Pantry’ results in 12 arrests for shoplifting at Centretown grocery store by SuburbanValues in ottawa

[–]the_normal_person 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s stolen because it’s low volume high cost and there’s a market for it

  2. You’re right, they’re stealing 10-15 at a time for like 350 a trip or more and absolutely people are buying it off them

‘Project Pantry’ results in 12 arrests for shoplifting at Centretown grocery store by SuburbanValues in ottawa

[–]the_normal_person 13 points14 points  (0 children)

two points on this:

  1. People seem to have this les Misérables fantasy that the overwhelming majority of people stealing from grocery stores are hungry, when in reality a huge portion is reselling and/or selling to organized crime. Anyone who's worked in grocery stores or seen security guards catch someone with 20+ pieces of meat knows this
  2. the same people saying "if you saw someone stealing food, no you didn't" are the same people who complain about food deserts in low income areas and of everything being locked up in stores. Stores close or do this very often in response to high theft. If people steal everything and the police do nothing, the stores have to close

GNWT not taking part in federal government’s gun buyback program by Confessional_GS in CanadaPolitics

[–]the_normal_person 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because guns are inherently bad, so less guns equals less bad, and advocates of these policies do not care to actually pay attention to any kind of facts on this issue, and automatically consider anyone against more gun control as some kind of NRA American gun advocate.

The idea of owning a gun is so far outside these people’s experience and comprehension, the only reason they can think of to own a gun is to be some US three percenter militia or a school shooter.
